ParticipantI use an Apple Tima Machine which wirelessly backsnup everything periodically. Or, more like, backs up different parts of my hard drive at different times. It holds 2TB of several different back-ups. nice but jot the cheapest option. Then I have two, 500 GB external drives that I keep two copies of all my photos, videos, and DJ music. Got em on sale at Newegg for about $70 each. There are also internet backup options which are growing more secure and popular. In a few years, all of my music will be on my cloud account and I will be able to access it at gigs to perform with. Don’t ya think this is coming?

ParticipantIn your mixer settings, do you have (filter+key+gain+cue+balance) checked. There is a pan knob which could be causing this. Just scan your mixer and make sure everything is neutral. I know I have it set so my eq’s, faders, and everything is right where I left it when I open Traktor.

ParticipantWait, you’re VU meters are going in the red with the gain on -5dBs? Or do your speakers just sound distorted? Where is the master volume? Set the gains at zero (12 o’clock), as well as the master volume (2 o’clock). Go to preferences, mixer section. I, have autogain when loading a track & the limiter checked. I also have the headroom set to -6dB. With my gain set at 0db, and the volume set at 0dB, I NEVER go into the red, and it is still very loud. It will hit the orange when mixing two tracks or at really loud parts of tracks, but that’s it. When recording, top right of screen, there is a separate record gain. This actually needs to be turned up a little if the settings are as I stated above. The recorder also has its own VU meters which you can easily see if its hitting the red. Check out this article.

It applies mostly to playing in a club on a mixer, but may help you understand what volume, gain, and headroom are. This stuff is confusing and involves a lot of physics. I’m still learning. Try the above and see how it works.

ParticipantSorry, forgot to f/up. Turning the Rokits up to +3 then +6 provdes MORE than enough volume. And yes Chuck, direct monitor turned all the way to playback is necessary. Its like a mix knob. IF I was dropping some sick rhymes atop my dj mix , it adjusts the mic input volume vs. playback in my computer. (my novice explanation) Focusrite monitor volume @ about 2/3 O’clock is enough to blow dry my hair via the ports on the Rokits. Easy fix, always is. Learning…….everyday. Sometime I forget it took me a decade to learn my profession. Thanks for the input and discussion .

Participant@Chuck, just saw your other post, P.S. 2. Thanks, will get back to you with results.

ParticipantI think the direct monitor knob allows me to adjust between hearing what I play, (if I ever do) through the mic inputs on the front along with the track playing. I dunno. Of note: The Rokit G2 Series User Guide states that the factory preset gain for system volume is, to my surprise, +6dB. It goes on to state that, “normally, adjustments would ONLY be made if you were using your monitor in a surround system and needed balanced levels OR if your monitor send is too hot and not adjustable.
Later, it also says that the high frequency adjustment has a factory setting of flat, +0dB.
Hmmm, this is strange to me. Preset is +6dB for one and flat for the other. Well, just messing around before, I know I turned up the system volume to +3dB and it is a significant increase in volume output. I will continue to experiment and let you know what I cam come up with.
I just want to have everything right, get best volume output with out damaging anything while maintaining highest sound quality. I also want to understand why……it’s just my nature.
I also want to understand it, so if ever called upon to perform wether on a PA at a party/bar or on a complicated system, I will know what to do.
@Chuck, what is the pm offer?
niu02kevin
ParticipantThanks for all the information guys. I’m going to mess around a bit, read through the user guide from Focusrite, maybe re-install the driver, check the settings, and I’ll get back to you. It’s snowing like crazy so I’m not going anywhere today.

ParticipantShould I have the auto-gain and limiter turned off? IF I turn everything all the way up: audio interface, gain, master volume, turn headroom up to +0db, my speakers……..yeah, it’s louder. But I’m thinking along the way I saw that everything should be set to +0dB.
Nominal output level (balanced) is +10dBu…..so according to this article:
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/03/traktor-gain-sound-level-settings/
Shouldn’t the master be at -10dB for real output of 0dB?
Or is this just if plugged into a huge mixer on a massive club system?
I’m getting conflicting information from different sources.niu02kevin
ParticipantGot my 2GB x 2 RAM Chips. Problem solved.

ParticipantD-Jam, can you recommend a site do help with webpage development? I like the idea of having my own page to load mixes and other things about me, my DJing, and my life. I’ve seen your site, cool and impressive. I don’t know the first thing about webpage development. I’m kinda busy learning everything about being a DJ/Producer. Kind of a lot. Any advice would be appreciated.

ParticipantAgreed! I would pay $10 for that having no clu what it did. Probably even $50 or $100. It looks like a mission control station for 1960’s NASA.

ParticipantTerry, about the small feet. I got the idea from a blog elsewhere. I dont see how the legs are attached to the table and the little shelf. They are legs and as such have drill holes one side, and just …….leg on the other. Is there something else you’re using? Or do I just need to drill holes in the small lip on the foot end?
