ParticipantAlso, I throw a lot of top40 remix music into my set to start when not certain that my electric music may not be a big hit. Test the waters with songs like Aoki + Kid Cudi “Pursuit of Happiness” and some Guetta + Black Eyed Peas. There have been house parties that had a top 40/hip-hop feel that I’ve managed to slowly turn EDM, and usually have good feedback from people unexposed to the genre.

Participant^ Funny thing is I’ve used Crystallize in a set to do exactly what Terry suggested, it works great

ParticipantThanks for the heads up man. I probably won’t have this all ready by tomorrow, but this is a step in the right direction. Essentially I was looking to create some Macro FX of my own using combinations of presets, for some uniqueness in performance.
Again, much obliged.

ParticipantAudio Technica ATH-M30
Good: Very affordable, comfortable (no risk of falling off of my ears, avoids the clamp death-grip), pretty decent neutral sound.
Bad: bass could range a bit deeper, the clarity is fairly decent but it’s not worth of ranting and raving about

ParticipantIt’s weird, I’m much more nervous djing than I ever was performing one of my classical pieces live/giving a recital. When I’m playing piano, I’ve never worried about whether my music is going to appeal to the crowd or (only whether I had faith in my talent as a composer). I also keep trying to minimize “dj downtime” (time where I`m not touching my controller while a song is playing) without fx whoring, for I don’t want to be viewed as nothing but a human ipod.
I have my first djing gig coming up this friday at a local venue. It’s a mixer that blends punk, hip-hop, and a few other genres of music. I’ve been asked to DJ the event, and I’ve been pacing around wondering whether my EDM collection is going to have any appeal with these crowds. I’ve made it a point to throw in some music that I feel closes the gap between genres (Steve Aoki/Kid Cudi, Afrojack remixes, etc.), but I honestly have no idea what to expect when not playing in a dance setting (don’t know where to begin on how to read a non-dancing crowd).
I’ve been telling myself that it’s merely my first djing gig (I don’t count house parties as gigs), but I still feel as if my daisy-chaining skills are not where they need to be. Good to know that I’m not the only one with nerves around =)

ParticipantI myself play Piano, Upright Bass, and Bass Guitar. When I entered college, I was a Music Theory/Composition major, and focused on a mastery of counterpoint. While EDM is a guilty pleasure, I bump Chopin, Lully, Rameau, Mendelssohn, Mussorgsky and a few others (Bach, of course) when I am listening to music alone =).

ParticipantThank you for the heads-up Terry. Would you be able to explain how the workflow caters better to some DJs? Learning GUIs won`t be an issue, so I`m not too worried about ease-of-use, only versatility and effect options. Also, what made you personally choose Logic over the competitors?

ParticipantThank you Phil, and I must also thank you for the great video course you’ve produced. It helped me a good deal with product selection and initial ideas for differing up mix transitions. Do you happen to have any material on intermediate fx use? As a pianist, I’m tempted to use them as I would a trill or glissando, but I hear a great deal of DJs espouse a minimalist view of FX. I’d love to know more!

ParticipantThanks for the advice. Out of curiosity, does anyone have experience with the passive MK1s and have any product recommendations? I’m not asking for someone to do my consumer research for me, just asking if anyone has any first-hand knowledge/experience. Thanks guys.

ParticipantAlso, pardon any typos/redundancies; breaking down scaffolds all day tends to completely drain me of any/all energy.

Participantalso, something powered would be nice

Participantupdate; Pinch counterintuitive, but the 2.1.18 driver is actually the new driver. Go figure =P

ParticipantThanks Terry.
