Participantbeat me to the punch, nice. Sorry, was trying to set up this tekken f1 mapping, didn’t get around to checking. Disregard the majority of my last message =) (still figuring out how I want to incorporate the f1 into the set, this is taking some time…..)

If you are interested, please
a) send an email (where I primarily keep track of potential acts)
b) plan on showing up to the maid 2 Thursdays from now around 700. I want to get acts confirmed asap so I can talk to my roommate (graphic designer) to get us a flyer up, then I plan on entering hardcore promotion mode. Loving the diversity man, and on that thursday date a little from now I want to get a feel for everyone’s comfort level relative to bpm, so we can figure out set order (could give a damn less whether I open it up or close it, I’m going to cater my set to the acts we have)NietzSKY
ParticipantHonestly, I’d go for it. DJing the dance can open up huge doors for house-party djing, and that’ll be a blast.

ParticipantMy 2 cents (which I’m sure is worth even less);
1) Controllerism is the underground imo
2) I don’t give a damn what you’re using to mix music with, I only care about the end result.I’m working on booking a Valentine’s Day Rave myself (http://www.digitaldjtips.com/forum/threads/edm-djs-in-dc-looking-for-a-starting-venue.7283/) and I’m encouraging controllerists to come out of the woodworks and show some daisy-chained cue-juggled awesomeness. Classical pianists complained when synths came out, I’m sure drummers are still dying inside seeing maschine guys, and I believe controllerism takes the focus off of the more tedious aspects of djaying (cue dropping and vinyl switching) and allows more focus on effects/live remixing/ableton setups/etc. Also, my back isn’t sore due to lugging around flightcases full of vinyls I may only want to use for a single track.

ParticipantI know nothing about european retailers, sorry man. Two tips though;
1) I’d use phones that are about on-par with your speakers in terms of quality. Nothing like blasting beats in a good pair of senns only to have your speakers not picking up on everything, and not sounding nearly as tight.
2) Stay away from Monster Audio.NietzSKY
ParticipantFor budget phones, I’d recommend the AT ath-m50s, the 30s if those are still a bit much.

ParticipantAlso, thanks for showing up Kody. I got my hands on that portable power supply I was mentioning, so now mobile promotions are possible. Going to talk to a few contacts at AU and see if I can’t reserve a spot on-campus for a 2 hour period where tunes can be spun/flyers can be handed out. I can take care of this personally if you find yourself busy, just figure’d I’d let you know =). If you need to promote anything yourself and would be looking for a fully mobile source of juice, I can also help you out.

ParticipantAlright, update from the first meeting:
–The date for the show is set to February 14th, 2013.
Valentine’s Day EDM show seems to have potential.–2 acts confirmed, still looking for 2 more.
We’re looking to have a diverse style between DJs to represent a spectrum of electronic music.–In 2 weeks, if you can commit to a little promotion/the show,
We need to set our acts in stone, so there’s a two-week deadline on finalizing the lineup/working out order-of-performance/style. If you are interested, send an email to discipleofnietzsche@gmail.com–Next Step:
After the 2 week period, we will be working on promotions. Promotions may involve clubbing, dj busking at various campuses/hot spots, flyering, and some open mic appearances. Promotions will be on-going until the show, and it is not expected to show up to every promotion. Busking promotion will be paid (completely evenly split tips) and the show is a commission-based gig.–Final Step
Making final touches to really throw a memorable gig and talking about stage set-up.We’ll keep in touch.

ParticipantYeah, I should be there until 9 myself, I can always boot up logic and wait around if need be.

ParticipantJust a reminder, tomorrow @6:30 the meeting is happening. Electric Maid, Takoma Park (across from the 7-11 near the metro station)

ParticipantIt just seems like it’d be the equiv. of booking Taylor Swift and telling her to put the guitar down because she’s not playing heavy metal……
Not to mention the reactions in the video sounded pretty pro-Shadow, perhaps a VIP or two just wasn’t diggin’ it. Nonetheless, mad respect to Shadow for keeping his cool.

ParticipantFinding good quality acapella tracks is rough, acapells4u limits your downloads per-month, and I’ve yet to find a truly reliable source. I’ve been looking for a quality Natural Born Killers acapella to throw in the remix deck for 2 weeks to no avail yet =/

Participant…..Amazing (- the Skrillex, that is)

Participant1) Lazy Club Owner
I will say though, I’m used to the dj either co-mcing or mcing parties. Usually, this involves some element of promotion/planning. Now where I come from more applies to house parties as opposed to clubs (pro-bono I’m doing it because I want to type stuff), but usually friends will come up and ask me to help them throw/dj parties. Marketing, I don’t feel takes a great deal of study (though it does take knowledge). For me, it falls into the same category of business administration (a piece of paper that is the equiv of going to an employer and asking them to tell you you are pretty). If you are constantly going to clubs/events, if you are observant you are noticing the areas (Adams Morgan/U St./14th for the most part in DC it seems) where the parties/clubs are, and the demographic attending on certain nights. Word-of-mouth ”off-time” promoting can also be great.
I agree with Menno though, ideally it would be nice to dedicate all of our time to the actual art, instead of worrying about promotion bullshit. God knows I’d be worlds ahead of where I am in terms of skill if I didn’t have to factor organizing/promoting into djing.

ParticipantI’ve seen people dj with only laptops/headphones before, so I’d say it sounds as if you have everything you need. As far as gear goes, I find the more gear I have, the more versatility I have in a performance and the more variation I can offer.
For instance, you only need 3-4 low end clubs to go golfing. However, you’ll see most people lugging around a full bag, and have duplicates of the same club.
