yeah, you can split a stero channel into two- mono channels, I’m just not aware of what VDJs audio setup looks like.

Glad I could help. I have very few original top40s in my playlist, but have never had a problem rocking a top40 night with the aforementioned strategy.

Seems like you have enthusiasm, that’s always a plus =). Welcome to the forums, you’ll find a great deal of advice that’ll help you progress loads faster than if you were on your own. Also, sorry I couldn’t help on your VDJ/pfl post, I use traktor and haven’t touched VDJ yet.

What I’d suggest is using some top40 remixes in the style of your choosing (I’ll use Steve Aoki / Afrojack remixes to warm the mainstream crowd up to my style) then progress from there. Fedde Le Grand’s Paradise remix is another song I find myself throwing into sets a good bit, as well as some oldies (video killed the radio star electro house remix, such fun). I’d start the set by finding common ground with your audience, then roll with the sound/style you’ve established and have been looking to play.

My first gig when I couldn’t split channels and had to blind mix with no prepared set. Was a roller coaster ride of a mix, and I must’ve chained 4 cigs when I stepped out to smoke one.

funny thing is I’m getting ready to add a mk2 micro to my kit; I wonder if I’m going a bit overboard with gear purchases =P

I could definitely see using it to help in transitioning; up until this point it’s been a scratch sample for me. I’ve been contemplating writing 8 or 16 bar progressions in logic, turning them into a remix set, and then attempting to use it like a maschine, but I haven’t been adventerous enough yet. It seems like such a powerful piece of gear, but it also appears to come with a learning curve =)

Much appreciated RJ. When I was talking about order of set, I’ve come to understand there is some sort of “unspoken” dj etiquette where I shouldn’t play banger after banger if I’m opening, so usually I’ll stick to a slower bpm softer synth/perhaps even a little orchestral sound to start off an even. If I’m going on next, I then play where I feel most comfortable (electro house / hard style / top40 happy hardcore remixes). A few friends have told me that one of their pet peeves is when their opening DJ “plays the floor out” (which I’m still working on fully understanding) and that when opening it isn’t courteous to the next DJ to do this. In your opinion, should I not worry about it and play what I play, or is there an unspoken law that I should adhere to when preparing opening sets?

Yeah, the story goes that Quartz was working on traktor integration for the ns7 a little while ago, but backed out of the project (I hear it is incredibly complex). My dream controller would be a traktor native motorized fusion of the ns6/4trak with the ddj-sx. I understand motorized platforms drive the price of the controller up by a few hundred and increase the weight, but I’d totally be willing to take the good with the bad.

Think that motorized platter controllers are still up-and-coming, and the problem is that the market is still young?

I just wish the notation aspect of most (if not all) daws wasn’t so lackluster. This probably just stems from the fact I’m comfortable with sheet music but inexperienced with writing music in other mediums.

I’m not usually a Trance guy, but your mix made me think I need to revisit the genre. I agree with the above comments regarding the transition from 1-2, but I will tell you that I’m glad 2 was in the mix, after a few beers on the floor I could definitely have some fun w/ that song.
