1. you don’t have to be perfect – it is likely that whatever crowd you are playing to (large or small) is 98 to 100% non-DJ’s, so if you goof something up, they are not likely to know, care, or remember it.
2. You only have to be ok. For your first few gigs, just do simple mixing. Pre-arrange your tracks. Scout the locations ahead of time. All of these things will help steady the nerves.True and true. I started djing at friend’s parties, because
1) Being in front of decks makes any guy 20x more attractive, and
B) Nobody cares about the skill level of the dj at a college party. If it has a dj, it’s a sick party. Period. After that, I started busking and playing outside just for shits and gigs. If I mess up, it’s nothing; often people come up and think it’s awesome you’re out there and hound you for your card. It was a way to eat after I got laid off of construction and still do what I love (was averaging about 10-11 an hour outside, with the occasional ”This is badass, here’s 20/50 bucks at one time).
I’m in the 3rd stage now, where I’m working on playing smaller venues / paid parties/events. I still am nowhere near some of the DJs I’ve seen in person or on youtube, but at least I’m better than Guetta and that counts for something XD. I’m still unsure of whether I could hold it down if I was the sole DJ for a 6pm-2am shift, but everyday brings new confidence and new skills.

ParticipantNot going to lie, when I go to a club as a patron the only things on my mind are the feel of the club/who I’m going to scope out/ style of music. When I’m buying drinks or dancing with someone, very rarely do I say “hold on hun, I need to go to the booth to make sure the dj is manually doing his job.”
I am part of the problem =(.

Participantworst part is that only reason I’m doing full-time employment is to purchase lights/fog machines for the show I’m throwing. Even when it’s not about djing, it’s about djing XD

Dj Phaydnit’s going to be interesting considering our lowest BPM is in the mid 130s; perhaps if Phadyn can do some dub step/drumstep (or if the MC phaydn wanted to bring can spit to glitch hop) we will be fine (figure dubstep is 1/2stepped anyway). I do a little chillstep myself, but was really looking forward to having hardstyle at a venue in DC. We’ll figure it out I’m sure.
Also, I just got a new canvasing job, and if I don’t quota out a large portion of my time may be occupied (I’ll still be able to promote from midnight-2 7 days a week and 7am-11am 5 days a week. However, this will give me a budget of about 450-500 to work with for lighting/fog (what’s a rave without lazer beams anyway?). I’m looking into the lack-of-promotion, and considering giving a volunteer promoter the exact same commission we are receiving (if Phaydn’s MC will be promoter, I have no problem with him guiding the night).
We’ll keep in touch, my goal is to have the flyer completed this weekend.

ParticipantYes, and it is horrible. I just landed a new job and everyday I work I’m just sitting there thinking ”Damn, this is such a waste of my time…….I still have to finish the bassline on song x, get about 20 more songs in genre y, etc. It’s not a desk job so I can’t integrate dj work with normal work……. it’s to the point where I’d rather make just enough for rent/util w/ craigslist odd jobs and work on djing all day.

ParticipantI definitely agree, there’s a lot more to djing than they realize.
Bach, however, was mixing 4 tracks and playing each one fully manually…….those fugues =). Out of curiousity though, what would be your opinion on a vjay who comes with pre-recorded sets, who doesn’t identify as a dj, and his only interest is really the light show?

Generally my answer this question is yes, but in this situation……. =P

ParticipantIf you don’t scratch/worry about jog wheels, the novation twitch looks like a decent controller on a budget. Also, it may be a good time to give a 4-channel mixer a try (depending on what variants of edm/techno you spin).

Participant^ That’d be lovely, as I just recently made the transition from house party/out-in-the-woods with a generator dj to playing clubs and events and am completely new to DC in terms of music. I’ll keep the thread posted on how it’s going to turn out, work is being put into the flyer later today.

ParticipantWe’re the underground these days man =). Rest assured, I jumpstyled my ass off while this mix was playing. Not too shabby at all man. 7:46 to about 8:15 threw me off (that drumcorps stuff with random dj words), the gate was a nice little touch around 9:40 as well.

Participantcheese pop at its worst, i need to go /wrists after this melody. Guess that’s what I get for trying to force one out of myself.

Everyday I am like darn homework (Edited: not excused sorry no bad language here) I wanna make a mashup. I think an S4 would be good, but the S2 is plenty. For a 4 track controller tho the VCI-400 and the DDJ-SX are imho better controllers than the S4 or FOR SURE the 4Trak
Don’t know, I didn’t like the feel of the jogs on the 400, and DDJ-SX isn’t as optimized for traktor as the 4trak. I’ll take the 4trak w/ traktor over either of these controllers anyday (though if there was a ddj-tx, might need to rethink that).
Will say, wish there was 4 channel monitoring on the controller, and 8 cue points instead of 5. The ergonomic setup of the fx is nasty though

This. I mean the worst case scenario, here is how it usually goes…..
Cop: You know you can’t be out here without a permit?
Me: My bad.
Cop: Nothing against what you’re doing, just doing my job. Go to X, it’s not my district and you’ll probably make more money there.
Me: Alright *lug all my shit 30m to an hour awayUsually happens once every few days because I switch up spots a good bit. At the same time though, my roommates (indy band) got booked for a club/bar in DC just by playing outside/busking. I’ve also had people give me 100s before, so it’s always been worth it. If you’re not causing trouble, cops will just tell you to pack up. It’s only when you start being a dick that anything actually comes of it (least in bigger areas)

I went for a NI Maschine and in there it is quite easy. You just load the whole song into the bank, go to sample mode and cut it in pieces that you assign to the trigger pads. I always however add sample pads (especially drumsets) from the Maschine sound library.
I am working on some sample videos, but since my schedule is a bit full atm it prolly will take until summer to finish them.My method differs a little from Terrys, but I use Maschine as well. I use Audacity w/ the LAME mp3 encoder, cut the sample, convert to .wav, then upload the sample all ready to go in maschine. Yes, I suck at programming bass kicks, and yes, I may have borrowed some kicks from headhunterz/wildstylez/bassmodulators………..don’t judge me! XD.
