MemberI am the trance mixing friend. 🙂
My shows are every Sunday at 6PM ET and you can listen via either TuneIn (search for Radio Free Gaia) or use the website of the station: radiofreegaia.com. The full schedule of events is also there. Enjoy!

None of them but she’s as beautiful and talented. Oh, AND she is supportive of me DJ’ing. So I’m a really lucky guy. 😀

MemberI am starting to see more and more clothing stores that either have music blasting or a resident DJ at the mall. Granted, I am not a mall rat so I might not be as “hip” on that department but every time I go into an A/X it’s like a Tiesto’s Clublife podcast.

MemberYeah, figures that right after that I had the same thing happen to me in a mix. I have this song that was a mashup between two songs with completely different beats. Whoever produced it was using an effect to jump between the two. I was certain I had removed it from my playlist for Sunday but obviously I was wrong. Since the song starts “DJ friendly” I was able to cue it up and play it. Then I realized I was in a big mess. The beat was all over the place, the next song of course would never fall in sync automagically since what VDJ was reporting was not what was actually coming out of my monitors, and I had to go low tech in a hurry: beatmatch by ear, ride the pitch back and forth, and stay calm. I failed on the third one.
Because if I was calm and thinking clearly what I SHOULD have done is find the “good part” of the song, loop it, and beatmatch to it. Instead I panicked and was trying to beatmatch to a song that was going from a 136 BPM progressive beat to a 120 BPM dubstep every 8 seconds or so.
Live and learn!

MemberI do my mixes live too but only recently started posting them on mixcloud. So my second one I was doing I made a mistake (I picked a track that had the same title but was lower kbps that I forgot to the eliminate from my iTunes library) and I panicked. So I stopped my recording and posted a little over an hour of my 3 hour set.
Of couse it figures that the rest of the darn set was fantastic. I had messages on my phone at the end saying “this was the best one yet!” and of course I didn’t capture any of it because I got scared.
So from now on lesson learned. The entire mix gets recorded and posted. Good bad or indifferent. I will just keep faith in humanity that the people are as awesome as the audience in this forum. 🙂

MemberI can honestly say that I get nervous on every single set. In the past it was a real problem: I would sit there and add to my nerves by thinking that surely if I were a “seasoned” DJ I’d be fine, no nerves, ready to take on the world with my set. And at two different times I consciously attempted to not worry so much about the set.
Those two sets were some of the most horrid sets I have ever done.
I then attempted to watch myself, as if from a third person, react to the nerves. I would triple check the equipment, I would quadruple check all my cues, and as the set progressed I would relax more and more and have fun. Obviously that was working well for me.
So I embraced my nerves. As a matter of fact I now use my nerves as a project management: I make sure that two hours before the set there are absolutely zero interruptions for me. No friends to call, no places to be, nothing. I use those two hours to check everything: from equipment to the Audacity on the second laptop that’s recording the mix. I even mix a couple of songs with my headphones on just to get in the groove. And I remain cautious of the time and the people around me. Knowing that I have everything under control I am able to get into it right away. I have to use the microphone during my openings so my ability to control things shows as opposed to sounding completely frazzled.
So now I know that I will have nerves, I anticipated it, and I have built a routine around it. So it doesn’t really bother me at all. 🙂

MemberVDJ will do its best to analyse the song and establish the BPM based on the wave patterns. But you can also over-ride that as well and manually set the BPM’s by right-clicking on the song, go to the BPM menu and set it there. Hope this helps.

MemberWhat Beedle said. Used both methods. I am finding now with a Launchpad controlling some of my loops that my responses are more instantaneous so I use the channels to throw tracks in. But it’s completely up to your preference.

MemberLooking forward to hearing your feedback after you have a few days with your new MBA! 🙂

MemberMine as you can see is raised as well but it’s not enough. I am in Sacramento where we currently enjoy toasty 116 F days and with the AC and a fan blowing towards my man cave the laptop still gets hot after a three hour set (the length of my radio show broadcast). So I very highly suggest the cooling pad.

MemberInitially I didn’t reply to your post because you said “no Macs” but I have the exact setup you are about to have.

Here’s what I’ve learned working with the MBA:
The SSD kicks ass and takes names. I will never ever go back to a regular hard drive. Even if it completely crashes it can be back up and running in less than ten seconds.
It gets hot so understand that since you don’t have massive vents (it’s ultra portable) you will need to keep it cool. Since that picture I have a tray full of fans that plugs into a USB port for power and goes right under the laptop to keep it cool.
It’s fully covered, even without Apple Care, for the first year. See my post about my fried logic board in the forums and my zero bill happiness.
You can truly control everything that’s starting up (or not starting up) with your profile. From the basic screen savers to the midi control panels Lion and now Mountain Lion are amazing on giving you complete control.
I think you will find that you not part with your MBA for a long long time. 🙂
