Thanks a lot! yea, I did find that, believe it or not. It was of no help to me, being that I’m not talented with stuff like this. But thanks for the useful input.

I’m on Traktor, I like Delay T, Beatmasher and Reverb.. (to be used sparingly, always, and at exactly the right moment–timing is everything).

anything else is kinda of a slippery slope and requires major skills to pull off… otherwise you end up sounding like a knob.

Epic: I would focus on text (ie., fonts) rather than try a put a bunch of cool images… First simply write out the text in a simple font like HELVETICA, play with colors a little on that, etc.. and then add one image (preferably a vector image, ie., a silhouette rather than a filled image)… The simpler the better AND people will remember the information on there more easily than it if were very crowded with stuff..

Attached, an example of a previous mix artwork I did (when I still unfortunately called myself bedroom deejay). It’s a little on the simple side, agreed (and could be improved) but it gives you an idea of what I mean (created with AI).. loooove AI… wish i could afford it

not sure about your VDJ question; I’m a Traktor guy meself. Not sure that that would be considered an upgrade. Search these boards for threads about comparing the two before making a buy decision.

    NADALSCORE 16 / 20
    BEATMATCHING ABILITY 3 PTS
    TRANSITION ABILITY 2 PTS
    TRACK SELECTION 4 PTS
    ARTISTIC DIRECTION 4 PTS
    TECHNICAL ABILITY 3 PTS

Excellent track selection, great vibe, energy maintained throughout — all the features of a great live DJ set.
Not much to say here except, show your beatmatching skills more, as opposed to merely transitioning between records (sometimes you do that too quickly). By the way, You should’ve brought Man in the Mirror in much sooner.

You’ve got the beats, the skills are mostly there, now show a little attitude (use hot-cues to layer sounds together, or you could loop a record’s intro with the outgoing record for effect, try using the beatmasher–but use these FX sparingly).

In general: keep it in the mix longer! But mostly, keep up the good work!

Audible key change at 17:20: watch out for that. If you’re on Traktor, how about setting your mix to master tempo? Stick to one BPM throughout your mix AND your song’s keys are maintained even if you’re out of the song’s intended tempo.

loops? your own productions? Why surely I knew that, Jimbo 😉
I suppose my comment about a tracklist is in vain, then? You should say in the title or the comments that these are your own productions.
I think the other comments still apply, clearly. Well done, by the way.

    BEATMATCHING ABILITY 3/4
    TRANSITION ABILITY 3/4
    TRACK SELECTION 3/4
    ARTISTIC DIRECTION 3/4
    TECHNICAL ABILITY 4/4

    Tracklist is missing

This is solid, NY/Detroit style techno, a selection of tunes that will be sure to resonate with any afficionado of the genre.

The energy level is maintained throughout the set, in keeping with this genre’s requirement for linear, buildup-free song programming. Beatmatching ability is impressive but not perfect, your transitions are too audible. Try gradually cutting the highs as well as the bass while you bring in the incoming track.

There’s the impression that your beatmatching records means merely playing two records at the same time in sync (ex: 1:02:43). You’ve got a good handle on syncing but you need to make these records talk with each other, create an enhanced sound which melds the two records together. How one achieves this separates the good from the excellent DJ.

Unless that’s all you listen to, non-vocal, bangin’ techno can get dull at times. Try programming hot cues and playing with those, triggering different parts of the track, layering them together in creatively so as to add an element of surprise. Using a vocal would enhance your set and help broaden your audience. Remember, more listeners, more popularity, more money.

    Show some attitude!

    Good job!

How do distinguish between auto sync and real beat matching, a sample scratch vs actual scratching.

Feed back of any type is always good but the best feed back will always be the crowd dancing or not as the case may be.

Hey Si BooGie, thanks a lot for the feedback. Thanks for the iKaosimulator for Ipad tip, downloaded!
I adjusted the thread based on what you said. You were totally right, and I should’ve been more clear on it.

Thanks for posting. Not sure what you mean by “live” set. Does this mean you were Djing out at a club on a paid gig? Otherwise this should not be called a “live” set. Just slap a title on your production, to make it recognizable and searchable.

The set clocks in at just under 60 minutes. The sets I review and score should be between 60 and 90 minutes in length (1 pt off in OVERALL DIRECTION category).

Comments are disabled on the soundcloud page. Might be better to enable comments to allow for listener feedback.

No tracklisting included. Unfortunately this impacts scoring (1 pt off in OVERALL DIRECTION category). Along with a tracklisting you can also embed labels and artists cited in your mix using the soundcloud tags. This will make your mix indexable and might (in theory) help drive traffic to your mix page. Self-promotion is key for us DJs.

Excellent intro track – good choice, and great track selection, overall, musical sensibilities remind me of Jeff Mills, Freaky Chakra and stuff from the Drumcode label. What’s the track at 10:25?

Cool artwork, although the bright colors don’t match the spirit of the music.

You need to work on your beatmatching better (example @ 9:21); it’s sloppy, at times (and better at others). You might try beatgridding your tracks beforehand, use the metronome (cut the highs to hear the metronome, beatgrid, then turn metronome off). Good beatmatching example at 18:33 (and then it goes off by a beat unfortunately).

Good use of FX but keep working at it, using Fx sparingly. Newbie DJs should in theory stay away from FX altogether, and demonstrate their skills in other ways.

Overall impression: you’ve picked a great selection of tracks. Your knowledge of dance music is in evidence. It’s clear you’re focused and into this. This is techno in its purest form, and it sounds awesome. That said, there’s little commercial value to this music unfortunately, something perhaps to think about as you start promoting yourself with clubs and radio (that is, if you plan on getting paid for Djing).

Thanks for posting. Points for including a tracklisting.

Good selection of tunes, good transitions, you keep it in the mix. nuff said. The DJ controller sure does help with production values, doesn’t it?

    Well done! Keep ‘em coming.

Thanks for sharing. Nice, slow buildup at first. That said, this track sounds unfinished, like it’s missing something ; maybe add a vocal to it? The acid bassline is cool but in my opinion it should be avoided. Unless you update the track with more oomph to make it sound more modern, the acid bassline makes the track sound like it’s from 1995. Looking forward to hearing your next production.

Thanks for posting. Not posting a track listing has impacted your overall direction score.

Intro track is hilarious and slightly unnerving (when the iPhone rang, I went for my iPhone to answer ;). Your sense of humor shines through and that bodes well for the rest of the mix.

On the basis of 27:30 and 35:55 I’d say you’re halfway through to becoming a good beatmatcher. Keep working at it though, you still have to work on this and improve. Also, as a rule of thumb, once you’re in the mix you should stay there for 10 seconds at least.

Program your mix ahead of time, determine what goes together and what doesn’t, test-drive your mix to ensure that you can achieve lasting transitions between records. Also, when using so many harmonious tracks, order them properly so as to really tell a story with your DJ mix. Also, are you playing for radio or for club/party? That will help you determine the right dynamic for your mix. Do you want a series of buildups and drops, like you would have for club playing, or have a more consistent time signature?

Overall, a decent DJ set. If you keep working on your skills, with this kind of track selection you could start submitting your mixes to radio stations. You choose some good commercial tracks which everyone wants to hear.

A soulful and versatile compilation of house tunes – you start off smooth and slow and graduate on to big-room tunes like Remember Me by Blue Boy (Hoxton Whores Remix) — a nice progression.

You’ve got the idea for beatmatching but you’re not always perfectly in sync. Are you beat-gridding? Use a metronome to set up your tracks properly.

At 49:14 the FX you used to intro Use Me Again by Carl Craig does not contribute anything. FX should be used sparingly and in the right place, learning this will come from listening to how the top DJs do it.

I noticed a couple of tempo changes – need to watch out for this. Any skilled DJ should be able to make drastic changes so gradually as to not be noticed at all. Work your tempo change in more gradually.

There’s a real good vibe in your mix – want to hear more from you.
