Because DJTT rewrote the firmware so it could switch from midi to HID mode.

that said, fair warning, based on the forums over there (DJTT), a lot of people have had trouble with the firmware update not working correctly. I have a MF3D myself and have had no problems with it myself, and from the threads I’ve read, most of the problems people have had were correctable, but still, if you want flawless integration, the F1 is a better choice. The Midi Fighter 3D is an option however, if you prefer their buttons for triggering.

The MF3D is an awesome piece of kit regardless, and I do highly recommend it.

two other possibilities for modular mixer/controller units are the Stanton SCS1M and the new Native Instruments one (that is also not out yet).

I have a Twitch (which I use with Traktor) and love it. The main things you should consider regarding it are (as Terry said) the jog wheel issue. Some people really prefer to have them, however I found I got used to djing without them very quickly and now I don’t miss them at all. You’ve got to ask yourself which group you fall into, because obviously that could be a dealbreaker.

The other issue is your djing style. Do you want to really get into controllerism and custom map everything? If so, that’s a plus in the Twitch’s favor, because it’s incredibly well suited to that. As I said, I use it with traktor despite the fact it was designed for itch. The traktor mapping that novation provides is functional, but to really get the most out of it you’re gonna have to map it yourself(or use one of the custom maps that are already out there, there are some very good ones.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with my choice, and if the factors I brought up appeal to you, you’re not going to find a better controller for the price. I bought mine used from guitar center for $200.

If you’re lucky enough to have one of the music based versions of npr in your city, you’ll find it operates much closer to the way bbc radio does. Here in Detroit, we have WDET (http://wdetfm.org/), which is an amazing station.

The only caveat I’d add though with regard to playing older music is that while classics are good, you should avoid music that’s “played out”. You can get away with playing a so-so track more easily if it’s a NEW so-so track, not so much if everybody’s sick of it because it was hot for a short time but didn’t stand the test of time. Ideally, you crowd and music judging abilities should take care of this problem, but this is where it also helps to know what other DJs have been playing, or in this case, USED to be playing.

I’ve got a pair of AIAIAI’s and they’re fantastic. I’ve heard good things about the V Modas as well, but I couldn’t be happier with the TMA-1s.

Okay, so this just might be ****ing to the crowd on this but…i honestly f***ing hate people who say that Dj’s are only good if they use “beats by dre”. trolling or not it just bugs the s*** out of me!

Are there seriously people that say this? The only DJ I’ve ever seen using Beats headphones is Skrillex. Most DJs I know are pretty obsessive about their gear, and know there are better headphones out there, almost all of which cost less.

My DJ software is Traktor and this is why, the first controller I ever bought came with Traktor so that what I learned to use.

That’s not the only reason of course, I could have switched to Serato when i got my Twitch or to Ableton when I got that for production work. I’ve grown to really like the flexible mapping possibilities with Traktor though, even though learning to do it wasn’t the most user friendly experience.

It’s also worth mentioning that if you’re using Traktor 2.5 the only controller that will work with the remix deck is the Kontrol F1, there is no midi implementation for other controllers yet, (but the new Maschine has coloured pads like the F1, so maybe this will change). I was pretty bummed about this as I was hoping to assign the Maschine pads to fire the loops, one shots, etc

Not entirely true. While the F1 is the only controller with FULL remix deck control, the midi fighter 3D does work with them. You obviously don’t have the faders or knobs, and its missing the ability to capture, so it’s not great for building your sets. The MF3D can trigger all 4 pages of samples/loops though, and does have color coded visual feedback.

I have both, and while I certainly prefer the F1 for remix control, I have used the MF3D to control a second remix deck and it does work.

There are plenty of DJs that don’t pay attention to key at all and do just fine, but I like it myself. Electricbloom is right, I’ve definitely found it most useful in Techno where I tend to long mix. I also use it in dubstep and breaks, though.
    Some tips:
    1. Absorb the knowledge on the Mixed in Key forums, you don’t have to use the software to use the forum, and you’ll find that there are many more techniques in harmonic mixing besides just following the camelot system’s basic premise.
    2. Ignore the keys listed on Beatport. So many of them are wrong that you’ll just frustrate yourself if you try to use them.
    3. If you don’t want to shell out the money for Mixed in Key, there’s another program who’s name escapes me at the moment that’s free and decently accurate. Mixed in Key is a pretty great program though, accurate and easy as hell to use.
