I dont personally mind scratching, ill be the first to admit im shit at it myself but I add a little when practising, loop a beat and just mess with it, but its the same with fx too much of it can ruin a nice song selection.

Fair play to the dj’s that can scratch well but a lot of night clubs that are mainstream its more about pop/dance/top 40 mixed in a mediocre manor. I think its the underground dj’s that put more effort into there techniques and think outside the box, (not dissing the pop/chart dj’s as some can be amazing and go out of their way to spice up stuff but I find a lot do it for image where I live, follow the crowd and not the music they personally like)

I think both are at fault here but no one will know the real story, there has to be more to it, I get annoyed when people dis my music but still wouldnt swing at someone, I and many others enjoy my music

Technically a dj is a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience. Scratching is just a minor technique some people “try” to use. If im in a club and hear a dj attempt to scratch I walk out as it ruins the flow of music and makes it hard to dance and enjoy the night, Unless I pay to go and see a specific dj play and do a performance I dont want to hear scratching and can almost put money on it that neither do the punters wanting to dance to lady gaga!

If your teachers in school would have told you ” I’ve studied too hard and long to help you learn.” You wouldn’t even know how to read to map anything. Come on the guy wasn’t asking you to do it for him, he’s just asking for help.

in theory he was asking for me to do it for him…. asking for a mapping that I spent hours on for free, why couldnt he put time into it???

you should check out a program called mix meister, this way you can throw the songs together and just drop the volume at the end of the track you dont wanna hear then export it as a finished song, and its handy since you do edit everything untill you like it.

Why cant you believe it?? I think mapping is something to get to know your software, as a digital dj its part of our job. If people want to get lazy they really shouldnt be trying to get into this industry. Ive spent hundreds of hours to get my mapping how I wanted it, that took time and dedication. I will gladly help someone with mapping issues but dont think I should provide something I put a lot of time into. Its kind of like asking “hey can I borrow your mixtape so I can try get gigs?”.

People really need to stop getting lazy the same way people get pissed off when they ask what a song is and I dont tell them, I spend several hours a week searching for tunes that stand out. If people want these songs they need to put in the same time otherwise in all honesty I think people are attempting to jump into the deep end for the wrong reason (girls, money and being able to say “im a dj”)

serato kinda sucks when it comes to being portable, maybe as a solution you could try mixxx or traktor etc that all you really need is an external soundcard and you’re ready to go, ive seen many people dj with traktor and a small usb card using keyboard mapping

erm, alright then fair point, a mapping I will recommend is one by a dj called stormeagle he has a site were he shares it. if you search dj stormeagle on google you should find it.

In my case its not too good to share it as I have one big mapping for all my controllers instead of several different ones, I do this so I can use other controllers as shift keys for each other so it would in all honesty look like a mess to you and have 7/8ths of functions pointless as you wouldnt have the controllers to use them.

Ive used stormeagles in the past and my current mapping is very similar just a lot more complicated but yeah that is one I would say to check out, the only thing you might want to change is the fx layout as he has the dry wet at the bottom and doesnt seem natural to me.
    hope this helps.

to learn the technical side, practise practise practise practise and practise and when you’ve done that and feel confident go and do the previous 5 steps another 10000 times untill you know your songs inside out.

the job of a dj is to make a smooth transitional playlist that gives brings as much people listening on an emotional journey playing songs that the may have shared memories too, enjoy listening to or even just want to go mental or jump around to.

you are in theory a “clever jukebox” you have to pick decent songs that wont clash, pick the right point to mix them in, mash up stuff to make it different and tease the audience, get eq’s and levels perfect and in general give people a night to remember.

the more you practise and keep on top of “hot” music the better and more confident you will get, it used to take me weeks to learn a song, now once I listen to it twice I feel I can know that song off by heart and drop it into any set at the right time, but this comes with practise and preperation.

    Many thanks!

Im sorry im not a big fan of sharing that kind of stuff, its what makes my dj sets unique, there are many mappings out there on google if you search around, I spent many many hours making that perfect and if people arent willing to do that themselves (which is all part of the job), should you really be a digital dj?? its kinda like going to a club and getting someone to plug in your cdj’s, your mixer, get all the levels right, load the cd’s for you etc….
