Hey, can’t really help but thought I should make a bump for a brother in arms. Us Navy, currently learning a language but you’re right, learning to DJ is a bit like it! So far I’ve just been watching the Learn to DJ fast video that Phil provides on the main site, helps quite a bit!

I don’t have much in the way of digital music, about 15 gigs of EDM and another 5 of other genres, simply backed up onto a portable hard drive. I have a free drop box account, that I signed up for to pass of some tracks for a friends set. But i haven’t used them as a back up solution. When I get all my vinyl digitized and re-collected , then I may initiate other solutions. I did not know that about the reliability of portable hard drives breaking down. I have one 320 GB h.d. that I used to use as my time capsule, I’ve had it for 2+ years, with no issues. However I recently bought a 1.5 TB hard drive to replace it. My macbook is full to the brim, (160 gb) And I have about 250 gigs of movies. I have a site hosted at angelfire.com for a graphic design side business I’ve been trying to get off the ground (freesolodesign.com). I have some important pictures backed up there. I think the total space I have available is only 20 gigs there, but it’s plenty for what how the site will be set up..as a one page portfolio with an image viewer. Back on topic, sorry.. :-p. Wouldn’t one time payments of a handful of portable hard drives, say at 2 TB save more time and money in the long run?

Well, the password key is a master password used to store all of my passwords. I have a encrypted password locker on my computer and my offsite, that contains all the passwords to every account I have. I use the file on the dropbox, drop it onto a USB key then unlock my password locker with that key. It’s a nearly foolproof security because it requires both physical access to my machines as well as access to a password protected online source. Good for acts to cards and stuff.

Personally I backup everything locally on a Time Capsule 2gb, as well as Dropbox. I have a variety of backup solutions of course.

Time Capsule for movies/games/quick access backups of all my systems
Dropbox for document sharing (probably going to be a godsend for mixes), password keys.
Off site server for secondary backup combining the two.

The three hit combination makes sure I never lose anything to any kind of problem.

Well there are a few ways. You can go to http://www.aim.com and create a screen name, then use the online client or download it. Or, if you have some other chat program (Skype, AIM, MSN, Yahoo) you can just share this username so chat can be done. They’re all great collaboration tools.

Hey, if you have an AIM, you can message me at “screwdriverclock”. I do a bit of graphic design work, I could maybe take a look at your logo and give some feedback. There is always the route of compromise where you can take elements from your design and his and make something even better than what either of you expected!

I’m new to all of this, but given my experience in other fields of creative art I’d suggest recording a few mixes, maybe a few recordings of you at local shows (do something for a friend’s party, or your school), and upload to Youtube. Give out fliers or post them in open areas that contain links to your videos. Other than that keep going, hold your head up high and be professional. You will be fine in no time.
