OK, so the gig happened and other than an almost major issue at the start of the night went pretty well in the end i think. People liked the music, and whilst there wasn’t any breakout dancing going on there was a lot of foot tapping and head nodding and the place was busier for a lot longer than it normally is.
So i was planning on using spotify but unfortunately couldn’t connect to the wifi in the bar so that blew that plan out of the water. I had a backup of my MP3 library so had to use that. As most of the music i play is a bit older soul, funk and groove etc i was still able to play the bulk of the tunes i wanted. I didn’t really need a mixer or software and managed to get through using windows media player, with just basic queing and crossfade.
Going forward i think that using a basic controller would suit me better, i have played around with Djay on my ipad but it doesn’t seem to be too intuitive to run tunes from spotify and an external hard drive all at the same times especially as i don’t have much room on my ipad and internet connection isn’t always available.
So next questions….
Controllers – Looking through the forums it looks like the Beatmix 4, Terminal 8 and DDJ-SR look like they come well recommended. Preferably i would like to get balanced outputs and have an inbuilt mixer, but for the music i play i am not too worried about sampling, effects and scratching etc. Any ideas?
Music – If i have to hang up Spotify, what is the best way to get hold of the tracks from my playlists in MP3 format? I have a lot of older stuff but there is still a lot of new music coming through that i get on Spotify
