Participantpaper for sure. I work in business as well and a similar question is always asked….is the digital format going to take over our physical brick and motar stores? No. They compliment each other quite well and I dont think no amount of social media will ever replace that element of human interaction. Although we do have a generation coming up that was born into sociial media so it will be interesting to see how they affect the market in the next 5-10 years.

Recently my world has been opening up to the dance music scene and I desperately want to get involved in what I call “the movement”. The music is better than any drug or buzz that I could hope to get and I just want to pursue that rush even further.
So, I need some help as I start to hew my path into this overwhelming musical universe that we all must traipse through.
Can you please offer some advice as to where I can EFFICIENTLY experience, and therefore, begin to understand the distinctions between the different genres of EDM?? I am asking this because right now I know what I like when I hear it, but I have no idea which genre what I’m hearing might fall into. And I feel like this is CRITICAL in my pursuite of building both my library and my own personal style.
So, for instance, I love the club tracks that build to that crescendo like a rollercoaster and then drop a rhtymic synth sound that just lights the place on FIRE! But, alas, do I call that “house” or “progressive”? What is trance? What is the difference between electro house and “techno”.
What has been happening is that I go onto Beatport or Mixcloud and search for tunes. But as I’m doing this I’ll search electro and not find the synth sounds that I’m looking for. I’ll search progressive but not find something that gets me that “amped”. Are the great, blood pumping tracks really so rare?
I just need some guidance so that I’m not barking up the wrong tree so often.
Thanks in advance!
Perhaps check out some tracks by wolfgang gartner. He is an electro artist and a great one at that. He is famous for his unique use of synth sounds and theres normally alot of build ups in his tracks. Check out:
Bounce
Flexx
Front to Back
Illmerica
Play Dub
There and BackThose are just a couple of my favourite tracks by him. Cold Blank, digitalism make good electro sounding tracks as well.

Do you have any pointers on how to go about it ?
Do you use any specific software to extract the different samples ?Pls keep in mind I have never done this before so just pointing me as as a complete beginner in the right direction to get started will be much appreciated ^^
Peace 🙂
You can actually use the caputre function on the f1 to take any loop size from the chosen deck. Then you can build from existing songs. I have a bunch like these.
Your going to want to have a plan in mind before you start adding samples. Thinking logically as to where you want similar sounds to be placed and most importantly keep it consistent. This is what I do:
First column – All my kick drums loops. I assign this colour red.
Second Column – My snares/claps/melodies loops. I assign this colour blue
Third Column – My vocals/acapellas. This is yellow
Fourth Column- One shots (any sound I find interesting that can be played for a short duration). This column is white. So every time I load a different remix set I made they al ahve the same structure and coour so it takes alot of the guess work out of the way during a live situation.
Makes sure all the samples you use sound likey they should be used together. It really helps when they are in the same key to minimize clashing sounds.
For making sounds from scratch I have maschine so I manipulate 6gb of sounds it comes with anyway I want. I know tracktor has samples as well so you could use those and add effects to your liking.
I would check out the below two videos. I checked them out when I first got my F1 and foudn them pretty helpful

(pretty short but I found he was right on the ball with regards to the colours).
Lastly HAVE FUN! some people say its boring making the remix sets but I find its part of the fun. Making something no else has, or taking something familar and putting your own spin on it!

Participant@ Hee Won Jung…I kind of agree with that as well. I think part of the fun of the F1 is making your own samples, or taking loops from your fav. tracks and makeing a remix pack out of that…I like to do this but if your someone that doesn’t than it could pose issues.
I took the f1 to my gig on new years for the first time. I used it only a couple times to be honest. I was concentrating on so many other things, and finding the right sample(s) to play was the last thing on my mind (had my maschine I was using as well). So I definitely need more practice with it alongside my other gear.

ParticipantI would like to start to use it to do some live mash ups cause i think its the perfect controller to do so as well. I find the build of it is so simple but like NietzSKY said its pretty powerful. Cause its not worrying about 2-4 songs playing on a deck…you have a shit load of samples at your disposal and if your using both remix decks theres alot to think about lol….so I guess start off with just a couple samples and build up

ParticipantIm going ot bring it for the first time to my gig on new years. I’ve had it for a couple months now and started getting comfortabel using it. I like to drop different basslines, vocals, one shorts, hi hats etc; Just a smal variation like that can change the whole energy of the track played. I find its cause when mixing betweeen tracks as well as it keeps a consistent flow going.
I’ve basically created my own remix sets of some of my favourite tracks and start using those in my sets. I feel like I have only scratched the surface of its potential.

ParticipantI had my first gig in November at my friend bday house party and I was pretty nervous as well so I took a shot before I started. As Terry said I did arrive 2 hours before everyone else so I could get comfortable and make sure everything was set up.
After about 10/20 minutes I lost my nerves and I was in the zone. I did make a coupel mistakes but no one really noticed. I did though cause youll always be your own wworst critic! Everyone was drinking/drunk so they just wanted to dance and have a good time.
I would definitely not try to do any crazy mixing/effects etc; just focus on the basics, get comfortable and see where the night takes you. One of my friends can drum on pretty damn good on maschine and he was jammin out with me that night, pretty unplanned but I went with it and it worked really well.
Even plan a mini set or start off with a few select songs you want to play then see how the crowd reacts.
In the end I’m glad I did it and I have another gig my other friends house for new years. I’m more excited this time than I am nervous and I learned alot from the last time. So I’d say go for it!

I would imagine there are challenges. Theres generally like one button thats mapped that you can press which quickly switches between decks….definitely got stay pay attention to your filters, eq, the different phrases of the songs being played….what are your intentions? Perhaps usings the remix decks and layering in samples of your favourite tracks could be another option.

havent used them though, I prefer only 2 decks and the remix decks…probably will look into it eventually when I want to change around my work flow.

ParticipantThere will never be a replacement for having a good quality track to begin with….Sh*t in Sh*t out IMO…..I had the same problem but what i ende dup doing is gettign rid of alot of bad quality tracks….but if I liked the song enough I would buy a better quality copy…i rather have a fewer great quality tracks then a bunch of random good/okay/bad tracks…
have u tried platnium notes? I havent used it but it is one I hear based around alot. Its done by the same group that does Mixed in Key
