The reason I’d use an external mixer is that I like having all my essential functions on the suface – not hidden away in shify layers. However, money is always an issue for students like us, so dont worry about it too much. I’d just try to hook up with someone who does have an external mixer and try it out!

Yeah, I get what you’re saying, actually makes a lot of sense, I just never understood it before now. Luckily for me, there are some relatively low prices mixers on the market today, which would allow me to get one without dropping hundreds of dollars on one. Definitely an option for me if I stumble across any cash right now, so thanks for the tip! 🙂

i was just about to post one of these, lol. Thats the reason I just came here!! hahahaha. I am dying to know what the price for the this new tool will be, I’m estimating a good 500-600 or so, which is way above my price range, so I’ll be sticking to my plan for an x1. But if I ever get the cash, I think this will be my next purchase, although I would definitely like to see some reviews on this before I even consider shelling out the cash for it.

Edit: the price is 669 USD. Very cool unit though

Fxn-L, great choice on not taking that gig in my opinion. Do what you feel is right, and only give away your talent if people are willing to compromise with you to let you slip in a little bit of what you love.

Well I have a cheap sound card (that is far better than my MBP’s sound card actually) that I use for cuing my tracks and I can always get another if I want because at this point in time, I don’t think I’m willing to spend that type of money yet because I’m only 3 months into this. Truthfully, what I don’t quite understand is why mixers are important anymore because when you are a software-only DJ with a controller and sound card for queuing, why don’t you just do the function of the mixer inside the software program? I mean, can’t i do everything i can do on a mixer straight from an x1? Thanks for the help, will definitely look into that set up.

I too am looking for a good starter controller, but the thing is, although I want something rich in features, I feel the Mixtrack is a little to toy-like for me due to the plastic build. So although it is a great starter controller at an unbelievable price, I think I might have to go with the Kontrol x1 because it is far more appealing to me, more portable, and I don’t think I would use the jog wheels anyway. So what I’m looking at getting is the Kontrol x1 w/case and the Akai Pro LPD8 controller, which appears to be a cheap, sensible option with a decent build and just the right amount of controls. The thing is, I can always get the Mixtrack if I decide I no longer want the x1 because it has a great resale value, which allows me a lot of freedom in the future. I’m still deciding though, so any input would be much appreciated.

I second Max. You are honestly an inspiration more than you could believe and you show me how much can be accomplished in the face of adversity, which is incredible to me. Just keep in mind that to me and many others on here, you are far more than “nothing” and I would be blessed to meet you one day, and look forward to that day. I hope you can think of me as more than just an “online” friend. Actually, as a matter of fact, I took a leadership class at my sleep away camp and we were asked to describe people who inspired us and helped us be who we are today and who are great leaders, and I talked about “my friend Emma, a great DJ who is resilient and stands strong against any obstacles thrown her way”.

Thank you very much Emma, it feels great to be recognized for this to be quite honest. Also, although it’s often difficult, we even more often share great times together and make memories that will last a lifetime.

I love the way you think Emma!

Hi Emma. In fact, I have mild OCD, but the real mental illness in my family is my sister. She has Bipolar Disorder. I try to offer a lot of support and help her a lot, but sometimes she doesn’t understand exactly what I’m saying and can get overwhelmed and upset. I mean I still annoy her in a brotherly way, but I try not to when she is in a bad mood or if it looks dark ahead. I don’t get mad at her for being bipolar, because I know she is suffering far more than I am from her condition, but sometimes what she says hurts my feelings because sometimes she can’t control herself and she takes vicious verbal stabs at me, although I know it is not her fault, and sometimes it is even at the hands of my instigation. I look into ways to help her and read up on the disorder, but in the end, it all comes down to being there when she needs you to cheer her up, encourage her, and just let her know that she is incredibly special to us.

Now Emma, I’m on my iPod now, but I’ll send you a PM tomorrow finishing my thought.

Thanks Emma, and yes, it was tonight. I got there and plugged in and started going. It went ok for my first time ever mixing hip-hop (rather bad actually) but nobody cared. I realized though that i was having a terrible time and it was just not my type of crowd (rowdy, drug-oriented, rude, etc.) and I only knew one person. I left 45 minutes after I got there. I now know that I should only do a gig if I am really going to like it and I am into the music I am mixing.

Great, moving advice Emma, I thank you for your kindness and open arms, and will definitely take the above to heart. Thanks for such a meaningful reply, as it means a lot to me, and I will try and remember what you told me whenever I should encounter difficulty. -Mike

Your story is one that makes me thankful for everything and everyone I have, and remind me not to take anything for granted, although this touches me much closer to heart than other stories out there. I think the reason for this is because music brings people together, and although I’ve never met you, I feel close to you because of our musical interests and because I look up to you, since meeting you online here a few weeks ago. From my heart, I really want to thank you for teaching me what is truly important in this world and showing me that hardship does not always lead to isolation and hostility, but can sometimes make you stronger. I wish I could express myself fully right now, but maybe mentioning that I have goosebumps will help me to do that. I admire the fact that you put so much dedication into your music, where others would “close up” and forget how to do what they love. I am incredibly impressed with how forward-looking you are, and anyone who has talked to you long enough can see that you have an incredible amount of dedication, and have also found a healthy way to express yourself, and that alone puts you miles ahead of many others who are in a similar situation. You truly inspire me to continue what I love no matter what, and if I ever experience difficulty which I think I can no longer handle, I will always remember to come back to music, thanks to you. Props to you Emma, an amazing woman, xx. Best of luck, Michael.

holy cow emma, i just got around to listening to some of your soundcloud dubstep….. i don’t even know what to say…. i mean absolutely incredible…. i am not sure where to go about posting this, so i figured i would just add on right here, but wow….. i mean quite impressive, you can feel the emotion in the pieces. just wow, all i can say. wow
