MemberI know exactly what you mean. I was at a club night not so long ago at a very highly respected nightclub in my local city. Playing at it was a DJ who has been involved in major nightclubs in Magaluf such as boomerang etc. He’s the type of DJ who wanders around talking to all the staff during the length of the song. Don’t get me wrong, this is okay when it is only warming up (which it was), but I noticed something I don’t think anyone else did. Whilst he was talking to one of the bar staff, he suddenly realised that his song was running out. No biggie, throw in another song quickly, nobody is really going to notice, they’ll all be chatting and getting their drinks in for the night. Before he could make it up to the booth, I heard the next song coming in, perfect to the millisecond, in a very clever mix. Yet this guy was still climbing the steps to the booth. He quickly grabbed his headphones and got on like normal, and nobody knew any better. I was RAGING.

This is 90% of getting gigs.
I think your approach is smart and if your passion stays alive, you’ll achieve your goal and beyond, no matter what style you play. Good luck! Thanks man, I appreciate it. Grafting and getting a bit of luck with who you bump into seems to be the key. I’ll definitely update over the next few weeks when I move into the city to let you guys know how it is going 🙂

To be totally blunt, there have been a few threads with music hate lately, and I’ve been biting my tongue, but it really pisses me off that even in a community such as this, where everyone complains about feeling persecuted for their choices in equipment (just look up all the threads about why don’t people take me seriously without a pair of CDJ’s) they then turn around and crap all over top 40 dj’s as no talent hacks and whatnot. Basically, they do exactly what they complain about others doing to them – just over music instead of equipment. I’ve been spinning mainstream music for close to 20 years, made very good coin doing it, had a lot of fun, and yet still have talents and skills to compete head to head with anybody on this forum who thinks they are “all that”.
Anyway, that’s the end of my tangent.
And more to your actual question – your plan is excellent. Have at it!
Completely understand your point my friend! It was more of a joke anyway man haha, but I do see a lot of hatred towards DJ’s who go for the “money slots” of mainstream clubs! I don’t care though, I like top 40 and I’m more than willing to spin it!!
To all others, thanks for the comments and advice. I’m looking forward to getting on the radio and seeing how it pans out! Guess I just need to jump into the deep end and see what happens 🙂

MemberThink I’ve got a better idea of how things work now 🙂 thanks guys! Me + my friend have decided to pack it in for a while because we can’t commit, but hopefully in the not too distant future we’ll shell out on some proper gear and get moving again! 😀

MemberIt was my friend’s laptop which we were using and as I don’t have it right now I can’t give details on the model etc. Sorry guys. I could have a look at the soundcard settings when we’re back at it again.
The event went good by the way guys, the sound was okay once we got it into the bigger room. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, we’ve only started so we’ll learn as we go along.
We don’t have a soundcard at present, we’ve had to rely on reading the waveforms on the program which is not ideal, but its went pretty well considering. The music for the venue is all commercial, so not a lot of talented mixing needs to be done anyway lol
D-Jam, I’m not really up to date with the functions of a soundcard. Haven’t even had the chance to read over all the articles on it as I’ve been really busy recently, which is the reason i’m only getting back to this thread now. I’m guessing that it has one connection which is USB to plug into the laptop and the little box has a headphone jack to plug in the RCA cable like we would normally do? Sorry if that isn’t explained very well lol! Would it take over the sound and make it sound a lot better, yes?

MemberLove the transition from Together into Ready To Go! Good choice of tunes overall as well!

MemberThanks for the help guys, problem solved 🙂 I didn’t realise I had “smart play” on the side of which the song was playing, took it off and for some reason it sounds fine again!

MemberYeah it was on, but the track was brought back to its original tempo straight away yet still had this effect, would having it on key-lock still make this happen even with the track at its original tempo?

MemberHey Jon, I’m new too! We’re on very different ends of the road though, I’m only just starting out with my DJ’ing! Looks like you had a busy schedule on your hands last year, I can only hope for the same in the years to come for myself 🙂
