ParticipantI just listened to your mix a bit.
I am sorry I don’t hear it 😀 All I hear is well mixed set of some uplifting trance. The transitions do not seem to loud to me. Yes they are louder but that is happening when you are mixing. Just relax! your on the right path here. I think you are doing very well. Just keep practising. And don’t mirror yourself to much to experienced professional dj’s like Markus Schulz and Carl Cox.

ParticipantLet me start with the gain / trim. With not messing with the gain they usually mean that you should not turn it al the way in the red. Use the gain to level the volumes of the tracks you are mixing. Don’t use the gain as the master volume.
About the volumes being louder when mixing. Well Vintage already said it. It is something that happens. I always see it as pushing two tracks through a channel that was made for one track. You can level it out with the EQ but you will hear it. And the louder the volume the louder the transitions will sound. Keep practising and eventually you will know when a transition is to loud and when it’s acceptable.
Record your mixes, because a transition that seems to loud from the DJ perspective can sound al right from the listeners point of view.

ParticipantThey are both synth heavy tracks that don’t really have a DJ friendly intro. So that makes it a little difficult. I don’t really know liquid that good but from what I heard it is really melody driven. A solution to that is harmonic mixing. I think you know what that is if not you will find plenty of info on this website and forum about it. This way the melodies won’t clash with each other. But some tracks are just hard to mix. At least that is how I experience it. Maybe you can use these tracks as the first track in your set. Solving 50% of the problem cause maybe the outro is easier to mix. Also you don’t have to do minutes long transitions to do an effective mix. Bring in one track and cut away the track that is playing. This can sound really good. Try to experiment.
Also mix compilations like that Hospital record mix are not always live mixes. A lot of times they are done in a DAW ( digital audo work station ) So they are kind of copy / pasted mixes. Still an art though, in my opinion.

ParticipantI wouldn’t worry about things being “not done” I mean there are DJ’s who find that anything else then vinyl is “not done”. If it helps you to add the BPM to track information just do it I would say.
I think you have to see it as what it is. Something to help you beatmatch. You still have to beatmatch manually. Especially on cdj’s without a BPM read out. So you still have to learn that. Keep practising and eventually you will reach a point that you don’t need to know the BPM of the track to beatmatch. But if that is the case knowing the BPM can still be handy for the arguments Vintage pointed out. Also tracks with the same BPM usually have similar energy flow ( giving the fact you stay in the same genre somewhat)
I don’t like to use a keylock / master tempo and I don’t like to pitch a track to far up or ( and especially) to far down. So I also like to know the BPM tempo of the tracks I am playing

ParticipantI thought it was a good mix. I did liked the fast mixing. And I also think it is good enough to send it to club. If they don’t like it at least you gave it a try. If you send the mix on a cd them maybe you can send it as wav. If you mail them the mix then you can send it as mp3. The advantage of a mp 3 is that you can listen to it on multiple platforms like laptop or phone.
The mix itself was good but I think there is room for improvement. The transitions were a little sloppy and loud sometimes. try to use your EQ’s for smoother transitions. I hope you get the gig. Let me know if you did.
Good luck with it.

ParticipantNice!

ParticipantSounds like a problem with quantize . If you have sync and quantize on the program ensures that cues start on beat. But I don’t know Virtual DJ. So I pass this question on 😀

ParticipantI wave my right hand when DJ Ãng. Like when you guide someone who is backing up their car. Only then the other way around and in circles. And I catch myself making hip hop like gestures with my right arm when the bass is kicking in.

ParticipantI think you answered a lot of your own questions. keep on practising is in my opinion the best thing. I think learning to beat match till a point were you are confident in that skill is a very good idea.
But I don’t think it is a good idea to take a month or so and only focus on beatmatching. Just have your regular DJ sessions and beatmatch some tracks and then a few tracks with sync. This way you can avoid being frustrated. It’s not that it is bad idea to focus on one particular skill by the way. But try to blend it in with your normal routine. I think the same goes for samples and effects. But I think you can’t really use samples to their full possibilities on the hercules Instinct. But I am not sure of that. Another important tip; record your sessions. You probably read that a lot here so you might already know this. Especially when you do you things like using effects, samples and hotcues. Get a listen from the audience perspective. Going nuts on the effects can be fun but for the people on the dance floor it can be annoying if you do it to much.
As far as you music collection goes. Are you happy with the tracks you have? Do you find that you have enough to play different sets? If so there is no need to spend all your money on new music. You know I think the best thing is to buy new music if you like those tracks. If you think I have to buy 50 new tracks or so you might end up buying music you don’t like in the end. So be careful with that. Remember this is all is just my take on your questions. Do whatever you are comfortable with. And I hope you get a nice present this Christmas 😀

ParticipantI just listened to your mix. And I thought it was a very good mix. You did a good job mate.
I used to play trance music when I was 20 years old or so. That is 12 years ago now. I had a residency in a local club. But little by little my musical taste started to shift away from trance. Since a year I started DJ’ ing again, digital this time. I play mostly deephouse and techhouse now.
But long story short, your mix reminded me again how beautiful trance can be. You had a excellent tune selection. I also liked the combination of trance and EDM tracks. That worked really well. Your mixing was also good. So I would say keep posting those mixes.
Keep up the good work!

ParticipantYou can try to turn the main volume down. I have the main on my traktor at -1.5 dB. Peaking in the orange is fine. But try to avoid the red light.
As far as I know the main volume controls the main vu meters. So if the main is turned down, that should stop the main from hitting the orange. Even if the track levels are a bit loud.
mauritsrotte@gmail.com
ParticipantWhere does it peak. On the master or on one of the faders? In Traktor the main only controls what comes after the fader. If you play a track and the vu meter of that channel peaks then you should turn the gain down. If that track peaks on the channel it’s vu meter even with the gain at 0, that track might be really loud. Try it with different tracks.
The gain is not a setting that you only set once. With each different track you have to adjust the gain to make sure the track does not peaks. But some tracks can be recorded really loud.
Let me know how it all works out
