    Hi Jonathan,

When I started mixing I was using Serato but despite it’s complications I still felt it was easier to get into than Traktor. However, the biggest step forward I made after just messing around with the software, trawling youtube for tutorials etc was, the DDJT tips course, How To Digital DJ Fast. I went from clueless to recording my own mixes in a matter of weeks. I know it’s more expense after you’ve got all of your gear but in my mind it’s money well spent. I still refer back to it every now and then when I run into a problem with a mix etc.

    Good luck with your mixing!

Here’s the best thing I’ve heard in ages, not really a tune you’re likely to thrown on to fill the dancefloor but it’s well worth a listen. Essentially the work of one man, Kevin Parker, he’s truly using the studio as an instrument. Also check out the middle section starting at 3:25 where he throws in a one beat loop to thrown the rhythm off and then reuses it until it sounds like the track is skipping.
Essentially a beautiful piece of modern psychedelic pop music, I hope you enjoy it.

    Hi Jelle,

I am going through something similar myself, trying to find a decent backup setup. I’ve got an ipad and I’ve tried the Traktor iOS app which seems to be a pretty good fall back in an emergency. In an effort to get something more “substantial” I’ve just started looking at DJ Player on iOS, which seems to have a lot of features and best of all, midi mapping for using any class compliant controller.

I’ll be experimenting with this over the next couple of weeks so I’d be happy to share my thoughts if you are interested.

I may be a bit late to the party with this one but it’s such a great summer tune. The vocal sample is sheer class taken from Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones and what a truly spectacular vocal to build a song around.

I’d highly recommend the DDJT course on this, very informative.
Personally I record in Serato DJ then apply any edits, processing etc. in Audacity.
Audacity can also help you convert your recorded .wav file to .mp3 for uploading to Mixcloud etc, you just need to download one extra file.
It seems like the cleanest solution to me, I’d rather worry about my mixes than about software so keeping it simple works for me.
