ParticipantA douchebag is an arrogant or obnoxious person. The guy in ljstevens’s story that blamed him for the other deck’s music not coming through for instance.

ParticipantThere are numerous ways to capture sound on a laptop, search around for one that works with your computer. There are also great tutorials on Audacity out there, no need to stay in the dark.
About getting noticed. Ask and thou shallt receive. The way I got my first gig is simply asking the owner of a bar, nothing more. Now I’m talking to a club to get a gig there and I’ll have to upload some promo mixes before they let me loose on their equipment. Which is only fair. I mean, how else is the club owner going to know you’re capable enough? That’s why it’s important to be able to record your mixes. You’ll never get solid gigs without them. They also offer a way to build some popularity and recognition. But beware, club gear is way different from your Mixtrack. It’s better to start someplace where you can bring your own gear and get some experience. I’m glad they never let me loose on a CDJ setup in the beginning. I would’ve made a complete mess of it.
The full Serato DJ will be much, much more than simply Intro + recording. You will be able to make better use of the Mixtrack. I also own a Mixtrack Pro II (albeit as a backup) and Serato DJ Intro kind of holds it back.

ParticipantThis isn’t such a bad thing. You came out not only as the moral victor, but you also showed you’re the better dj. The crowd knew as well. And I don’t think these two clowns will be asked for another gig, so you win again.
I talked to a friend of mine about this the other day: you can only control yourself and nobody else. If you did things correctly (and you did, by the way) then there’s nothing to be ashamed/angry/frustrated about. There will always be douchebags and there’s nothing you can do about that.

ParticipantI disagree as well, the Denon CDJ’s can do more than most Pioneer CDJ’s for half the price for instance.

ParticipantMake multiple playlists with a pre-selection of music you think the people will like based on genre, time of evening, or anything else you think is a good devider. Select them like vinyl dj’s would select which vinyl they would take to a party.
If you do too little the set is very rigid with little opportunities to change your mind. If you take too much you may get lost in your collection. About two times the amount of tracks you will play seems to be a good baseline. But ofcourse opinions will vary on that. You’ll learn those things with experience.
Also, don’t be afraid to just try some things you’re not sure about. It’s ok to pick a few wrong tunes, just like it’s ok to make some mistakes. Some hotshot dj’s make mistakes intentionally to show that they are really doing the dj-ing and are not playing some pre-recorded set.

ParticipantBuy the software instead of downloading it illegally…

ParticipantThe basic course has very, very little beatmatching in it. Literally some minutes. Go to ellaskins on youtube, he’ll teach you much better.

ParticipantIt is, but as you know I’m in the ‘analogue alternatives are not alternatives’ camp 😉
You should always compare decisions to the optimum, not to the status quo. That’s not an opinion, but a proven fact 🙂Marco Solo
ParticipantThere’s a big difference between the ns7 and the ns7 ii. The ii has performance pads on the bottom, and effects controls. The original had neither. It’s rediculously expensive though and very, very big. I don’t think the OP has the budget for it.

ParticipantI don’t think you can go wrong with either, but keep in mind that there’s an SX2 coming for I think the same price as the SX. Could be worth the wait.

ParticipantI’ve now had some practise on CDJ’s (a CDJ2000, a CDJ2000nexus and a DJM2000) and I must say I prefer my DDJ-SR at home which costs about 10% of the CDJ setup (the laptop doesn’t count, I need that one for other stuff too). I don’t see the whole point of using CDJ’s being more fun or real and I don’t think their build quality is that good either. Most of the controls felt really cheap. I had no problems switching to the CDJ’s from my SR so there’s no reason for me to own some at home. As far as I’m concerned the CDJ’s are a bunch of overpriced and overhyped dinosaurs.
If you want something that feels good, I’d look into a good quality controller if you don’t already own one. If you’re still interested in CDJ’s, try to have a go at a local store or try to find somebody that owns some and try it out for yourself. I don’t think you’ll be that impressed either. I know I wasn’t.

ParticipantI don’t know about the SX, but with the SR the unit itself is the license. I only need to have the SR plugged in for the full Serato DJ to work. My guess is that it’s the same with the SX(2).

ParticipantThe X1 is nothing but a midi controller. It’s just a box with buttons. What it does is control the effects in Traktor itself. With Traktor, it’s pretty much plug and play.
