ParticipantLook at this thread: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/topic/how-do-i-know-when-its-time-to-upgrade/
It’s my path towards owning an SR with comments on it after using it for a few months.Marco Solo
ParticipantCan you beatmatch manually? I mean, people thought I was good at mixing whilst I was still syncing everything automatically and quantising loops. Your audience may not be able to tell wether you’re skilled or not. Mine isn’t, that’s for sure.

ParticipantIf you want to get noticed you need to stand out. Ergo, producing is not the way to do it. Get into turntablism, controllerism or other isms that require skill.
Marco Solo
ParticipantWhy would you go with CDJ’s? Rekordbox is not needed for controllers as the software is doing the actual work. There is no reason for the SX to work with Rekordbox.
Marco Solo
ParticipantWhat is he going to do with it? Just playing mp3’s in his bedroom or something more sophisticated. In any case and XDJ-R1 is way over the top as a first set.

ParticipantIt sounds like you had the same problems I had, only live. 3.2.1 is only for mac though, I don’t know what you’re using. Windows is still on 3.2.0.

ParticipantThe N4 is even cheaper than the DDJ-SB, which is fairly limited. What software will you be using? It’s no use if you buy a cheap controller and it doesn’t come with the software you want to use. It’ll be more expensive in the end.

ParticipantIf you’re only doing basic djing, why do you need to upgrade. What do you miss right now? You can only get a good answer on what to do if you know what you need (not want, need).

ParticipantThose books are still useful and they are useful in any genre. It’s all about overlapping phrases with the right bpm in the right phase. Read them, then read them again. And start simple. You can find a lot of tutorial videos on youtube. The ones you’ll benefit from will be from ellaskins, dubspot, digitaldjtips and djbolivia. No matter what gear you have, the principle is the same. But if you have a midi controller the learning curve is less steep. It is obviously most steep if you use turntables.

ParticipantI can give you a definition of good music. Music that’s original, well produced, has good lyrics, a nice vibe, is hard to play/produce, etc. Any of these will get the good music stamp from me. By that definition most (not all!) electro house is bad. It all sounds the same, it’s very predictable and childish and a monkey could produce it.
I’m also an example of a youngster (24) who knows where everything came from. I love rock from the seventies and regularly listen to bebop (a jazz genre) from the fifties and sixties. People like us are out there, but it’s not exactly crowded.
I’m also one of those people who would rather play techno, minimal and deep house all night. But the reality is that you’re not going to get any gigs ever in my area if you focus on that. So what I did is branch out. Now I play the electro that I like, some progressive and even some top 40 if I like it and it hasn’t been overplayed yet. I also started looking at other genres. I recently discovered breaks via a tutorial by ellaskins and it works very well in my area.
This is not the same as being a jukebox, you’re still playing the stuff that you like. It’s about finding the overlap of the circle of your taste with the one of the audience. The larger your circle is, the more likely it is you’ll find something that your audience likes. So branch out a little, you never know what you might find. Don’t focus on one particular style. Crazes come and go, they always have. Once they do you’ll be the one in charge, because the hipsters can only play EDM.

ParticipantMy guess is that they don’t mix them at all, but use something like Ableton Live. 20 tracks in four minutes is madness btw, your audience will hate you for it if you go on for too long.

ParticipantWhere are you right now? What is your equipment? What are your skills? What are your plans/dreams?
Marco Solo
ParticipantWhere do you shop for controllers? You have different prices than where I live. At your place the Numark is less expensive than over here and all the others are more expensive. The Numark is better than the Denon I’d say, but it is getting a bit old. Maybe you can find something newer with more capabilities in the same price range.

ParticipantSerato is really weird in that it has four banks with 6 slots while most controllers have 8 pads. Traktor has 16 pads available with four slots with four banks. Even though most controllers only have 8 pads, they are able to use all slots.
You can use the F1 with Serato in midi mode, but don’t expect the same performance as you see in Traktor.Marco Solo
ParticipantSo you think Mixvibes can just choose what they implement without consent of Soundcloud? That’s incredibly naive.
