Yeah, so heres a resolution breakdown.

13″ – Super portable, nice screen res, longer battery
15″ – Kinda portable, larger screen res, long battery
17″ – Not really portable, super large screen res, kinda long battery

I’ve got a 13″ i7 and I use Traktor with 2 decks and 2 sample and it works like a charm. But as others have said above, its kinda cramped with 4 decks fully expanded so if that is a really big issue, I would stick with a 13″.

Delay freeze is in Traktor and a setting you have to configure under the effect parameters in Delay (has to be configured to “Single” effect, not “Group”). It says something like FRZ underneath the feedback knob. So whenever you turn on the effect, it stops and delays the last beat until you turn off the effect. As for echo freeze, I don’t know of any software actually calling it that but it is to the same effect as delay freeze in Traktor.

You can also do similar things in VDJ with the reverb effect by sliding the strength and room size full and hit the “Wet Only” option (which only feeds the sounds coming from the effect) and just manually stop the track. As for Serato, I do not know (I’ve never used it).

When i started looking at upgrading my hardware, I also looked at the software. I gave vdj a go (i was especially intrigued by the video mixing capabilities, although never quite explored it..)
Now that i know the programs a little better, I prefer Traktor’s method of syncing (Quantize and Snap >in vdj when you can hear it “slide” over if you dont hit play EXACTLY on the beat, since you have to sync it afterwards….. very gross lol)
I also prefer the separate “side by side” stripe views… you can easily look at a chunk of a track and based on the minute markers easily determine where phrases of say 32 or 64 beats are.

Now that i have T2pro, (despite my favorite color scheme being gone) I am definitely addicted to the new spectrum waveform display. Its just too good. My hardware is now the MC6k from Denon & im working on modifying Altamira’s TSI ton include the couple of beatgridding functions i still need to grab my mouse for.

Once Traktor can analyze the Key of your track, and suggest similarly keyed tracks like Vdj, there would be no reason for me to even mention Vdj in a comparison thread.

you can change the color scheme so you can have orange, which is almost like yellow

In traktor sometimes when you switch tracks the echo freeze switches tempos to the new master track, which is kinda odd if it is done wrong.

I use Traktor Pro 2 because its functionality, reliability, and accessibility. I started out with VDJ free and loved the way it felt but I felt held back in the way of effects (which is mostly what I use).

I absolutely love the effects by themselves and when you can mix them, you can create thousands of unique sounds. In addition, I like how all the effects that use beats like Beatmasher and Gater, have setting that match the beat so the effects are right in time. I had a hard time in VDJ syncing effects like the phaser.

I also like being able to see all the information that I could ever possibly need to see all the time. One thing that is to be desired is the overlapping waveforms that are in VDJ and Serato. Otherwise I like the deep midi customization, loop recorder, sample decks, EQ’s, stability, the 8 cue points per deck, and just ridiculous amount of polish.

I haven’t tried Serato yet so don’t hold my word for it, but from what I’ve heard its a mix between VDJ and Traktor 2.
