I have the mixtrack pro and mine also came with a serato intro CD. Might want to try that out if it came with it as well. Otherwise, VDJ is pretty good for what you want to do. VDJ is great for taking that starting step into DJing and can help you choose what path of software you want to move to if you get to that point. Also the $300 price tag can be a little daunting but they have multiple packages you can select from, check out their website. Traktor can be a little overwhelming to a new user but once you learn the interface, you can really do a lot with it. You can get a free trial of Traktor on their website so you can see for yourself if you like it. And you get Serato Intro here (although I’m not sure if its free or not). Anyway, I hoped this helped you make a decision.

Thanks for all of the advice. I’ve tried FL studio before on my old PC and it was ok i guess but that was almost 2 years ago, before I started DJing. So I may have learned a lot about what sounds good and phrasing and such. I’ll try to get the Dance Music Manual so I can at least get to grips on how sound design and synths work. Hopefully I can really expand my abilities to produce and hopefully that will help me become a better DJ since I can have more control over what exactly I can play.

I haven’t really started but I might very soon (as I am in need of money and I want to do something that I enjoy) at bars, or a house party or dance, which ever comes first. I play mostly electro house, prog house, dub step, glitch hop and have a few d&b, trance and pop tracks but aren’t really super skilled in mixing those with my other music. The town I live in really has no night life at all (an upper-middle class suburb of Houston) so I don’t know about how the crowd will react.

You don’t have to, but I just used iTunes because thats where I put my music on my previous PC for my iPhone. It is possible to transfer music over wifi but I don’t know the first thing about networking and I chose easiest way. Its really easy but if iTunes is really the devil, there are other ways to get around it.

As far as songs are concerned with iTunes its really, REALLY easy. Just set up your iTunes on a home network for both and then go into your MPB’s iTunes and import all the songs on your home network. It took about 4-5 hours for most of my music which easily beats the days it could take to transfer everything on CD’s or a flash drive.

Yeah thats where I started and then I expanded to VDJ and eventually to Traktor. I highly recommend you take the jump to VDJ if you haven’t. You don’t really need any gear (besides a laptop) and you get so much more control over everything.

You have to be in extended mode in order to get that feature. Or have a larger screen res for mixer i think (i have a MBP 13″ so don’t take my word for it).

I have a mixtrack pro and had a similar problem. Heres what I did.

1.) Open up Preferences in Traktor (Gear at the top or press Command + , )
2.) Go to audio setup and change the audio device to Mixtrack Pro
3.) For sound coming out of the headphones for cueing go to output routing and set the mixing mode to internal because you are not using a dedicated mixer.
4.) Then, put Output Master L to “Output L” and Master Output R to “Output R”.

And there you go! You should have sound coming out of your headphones now when they are cued.

Check out Beatport because it is specifically made for EDM. There are a ton of sub genres I didn’t even know existed before hand. And thats where most of my music discovery takes place because Beatport takes on so many more labels than iTunes does.

I’ve been recording all my practice sessions in the evenings then putting them to my ipod to listen to on the way to and from work the next day. I’ve realized that while you’re in the mix, you’re mindset is so much different from when you’re just listening to music. It’s eye-opening to hear what you did the night before in a completely different environment. What you thought was the most innovative mix comes across as awkward and stilted, and that time you screwed up all the EQs is barely noticeable.

Recording everything also puts some pressure on you like in a performance situation. If you mess something up, you can’t just scratch it all back and try again, you have to scramble your way out of it and move on.

You can’t get growth without reflection.

Yeah I do pretty much the same thing, except I fool around to see what sounds great mixed before I record. After I record a few times, I immediately listen to the tracks and see what I did wrong in each. And if it passes my inspection (like a 1 bar eq overpower that was fixed) I’ll throw it onto my iPhone and Soundcloud (copyright permitting).

As long as you take a serious look at how you record and scrutinize ever small mistake, you will listen to your past recordings and see how much you have grown.

Just curious, why does the audio icon have a bar through it?

Oh my Mixtrack Pro was unplugged and that is where I have the sound routed out of.

Actually, if you order it from Apple.com, you can get a solid state upgrade. Heres the prices

    128gb – +$200
    256gb – +$600
    516gb – +$1200 (jeez!)

You can also get a memory upgrade from 4gb to 8 for $200. But really aside from those two things, there really isn’t that much customization left.

Nothing is cut off or resized font or window wise, it just gets kinda cluttered. You can use it in “full screen” mode which resizes the window to 1280*800 which effectively gives you a perfectly sized screen with all the features. I use “mixer” mode which expands the window to reveal all info, but there are other screen configs you can use that show you less so you can have more room for multiple decks. If you suffer from information overload, you may want to pick one of the simpler configs.

Also to answer another question, Macs aren’t really built for customization. There are a few different things you can do, like expand HDD space and upgrade a processor, but apart from that, theres no real upgrades or modifications you can do internally. I would recommend the 500gb HDD or just upgrade to the i7 (which has 500gb). Otherwise you can buy an external HDD for a lot less.
