I’m talking about producers who are signed to labels and producers who put their tracks on beatport, Itunes, etc. If you wanna give your track away for free then cool, but I’m sure producers who put their work on beatport or whatever expect people to buy the track and not just download it for free.

and my questions were completely UNconfrontational. was just asking to carry on the discussion thread. so, yea i get your pont.

So how do you hustle your first gig ? ‘excuse me mr club manager, i’m not a real dj (awkward laugh) because i haven’t been paid as yet, but if you give me a go and just give me ten quid, i’ll then be able to call myself a dj” …

or, someone who has thousands of listeners across the globe thru an internet radio station but just because he/she doesnt have people in a ”room toe tapping” oh he is not a dj…

ok, that makes total sense. I love sound reasoning like that.

Hmmm Dayvue, just getting paid to DJ in public, well, that just makes you a paid DJ. Nothing special.

I concur with the first comment to a certain degree, but just playing two songs after each other doesn’t make you a DJ per se’. You could, in effect teach a two year old to simply ‘play’ two tunes one after the other. For me, my moment is when I started to purposefully SELECT and put two tunes together. Fundamentally that’s what we do and what differentiates us from the audience we play to, even if it’s just the cat. You pick a song for a number of particular, but specific reasons and then choose the next track for the same or a slightly different set of reasons, and play it. The fleshy part of DJing such as beatmatching, hardware format, marketing gimmickery, and all that bollocks doesn’t take away from the fundamental of what a DJ does, just enhances the listener experience and allows for creativity to be expressed.

So, bestow that title unto yourself dude.

Yea bin covered a few times on ‘ere ( surprise surprise) …

If you are a new user of emusic.com they are currently giving away £12 worth of credit once you sign up with one of their plans. You wack in your card details, download your tunage and then cancel (within 7 days I think). At £0.42 per track, you get 24/25 free tracks! And they have a HUGE collection, though size doesn’t always matter.

I’m not sure of a one-stop shop for free giveaways though Dave, maybe that’s a business idea in the making. You tend to have to follow the particular artist like a lovestricken puppy for sometime and await giveaways through their websites/blogs. Happy for someone else to chime in with further suggestions here

I appreciate certain individuals are bound by particular time constraints, however in my opinion, crate digging wether for free, rare and/or good music should really be practised and cultivated. The reward is hundreds of times sweeter once you find a killer track, and you stumble on the most random gems in the process (usually).

    Hello Galagus

Big congrats on completing the online course, it’s packed with so much briliantness ! Thanks for posting your mix, it’s hard to put your self out there in a vulnerable position for your peers to critique your work, I really appreciate that.

Off the bat, I’ve never used the Novation Twich ‘n’ Itch, so I can’t offer technical advice and I will not comment on your style of music because it’s what you like and play, so that’s cool.

I felt the transitions between the first two and the second to third track could have been a lot smoother, frankly there was some definite trainwrecking going on, so getting your beat matching tight in your headphones or on screen before you drop it out to the world will prevent that happening. Some particular effects can mask a train wreck, it may be an idea to get to know them just in case the mix just aint pulling off right and you need to drop the next tune in.

I didn’t get the third song ‘Future’, it didnt follow on harmoniously from the previous two, and I need to ask, all those sound effects it has, is that the tune ? It sounded really messy and a incoherent. Moving onto ‘I’m Talking’ there was a smoother transition than before, however a lot of ‘downtime’ of intro before the actual tune stepped in and unfortunately that particular intro isn’t that interesting, so you would immediately lose the crowd if you played it that way at a gig.

And then Rootsie and Boopsie dropped and I was like ‘Uh??’ A random ska/reggae track in a middle of a house EDM set. Didnt sound like it belonged at all. faded in and then faded out back to the next trancey house track.

By far the BEST bit for me was the Truth & Lies, into the Future remix. It was as a different DJ had stepped onto the Twitch. It was beatmatched and came in at an appropriate part of the song, and a lot better. Unfortunately spoilt wth the final choice of song that’s outside the genre of the entire mix was a shame. Again, it had the Roostise and Boopsie effect.

So in summary, keep at it, maybe ask the Twitchers on the forum for some particular technical advice. Think about track selection and how to integrate them a little more harmoniously. Finally listen to lots and lots of DJ podcasts and mixtapes if you want to improve. You start to pick up on what sounds good together and what clashes. Instinctively those things become part of your mixing. Thanks for putting yourself out there bro !

Valid question Dave, worth asking. I’d agree with the sentiments of other DDJers to be yourself. You’ve pointed out, standing outside, arms folded in a run down urban estate in sunglasses may not be very ‘you’. Take your image seriously, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be a serious image. A lot of the symbolisms and logos DJ’s use on this site aren’t as you described. Mark Ronson went from doin that ‘ooo wee’ hip-hoppy track wearing traditional hip hop gear. Moved on to the East London, skinny jeans, scruffy check shirt, plimsoles favoured by the Hoxton gays, to appearing in GQ in tailored D&G sharp suits. However, his music (wether you like it or not) is what he is most famous for.

IMHO having professional looking marketing material, graphic design, website, business cards goes much further than moody looks in cheap clothes in a poor neighbourhood. Let your music back your chat dude. I always think ” if your too late to be the first, be the best, if you aint the best then at least be DIFFERENT”
