in reply to: Advise? Earning to buy gear/software/music #13441

Well, in my case (being a student) i try to do without, or use really cheap gear. So for software I use the freeware/opensource Mixxx (which unlike most free DJ software, isnt cheesy), and when i need hardware, i use a Korg nanokontrol (and if i can figure out OSC messages, an android app). I dont really have a soundcard, but i use ASIO4all to get low latency. I’m in the saving phase 🙂 This probably isnt the best way, so i’m interested in other peoples ideas.

Wait, do you have all the stuff in your signature? MBP and mixtrack, etc?

Hmm, you could go door to door selling Phil’s “How do Digital DJ Fast” course 😉

All kidding aside, +1! It’s not exactly DJ related, but how do you guys (students in particular) fuel your quest for new gear, software, and music?

in reply to: What do you think is the best Entry Level Controller? #13401

I think the new Behringer all in one will upset the list a bit when it comes out.

Numark broke alot of price-quality barriers with the mixtrack/mixtrack pro, looks like Behringer is ready to take it to the next level.
What software do you think it’ll come with? You could get this and a Kaoss pad Quad for less than most midrange controllers. That’d be a neat setup.

Does anyone have any hands-on with any of these? how are the jogs on the CMD-Studio-4A?

in reply to: I just won some KRK speakers! #13126

    Congrats man!

That’s the other thing, all european names sound equally cool to americans 😉

in reply to: budget controller by jog wheel question. #13094

Do you need a pair of jogwheels? or would 1work? you may be able to get more for your money with a single deck controller.

Sega Genesis and PS2, and if I can get some more money, I’ll probably upgrade to a 360.

Two watches means you can know the time in two places, e.g. if you live in Amsterdam and are playing in New York City, you can know home time and local time.

Dont forget the Stanton SCS.1d, which has a spinning 10″ platter and much better resolution than timecode, and the EKS Otus, which has a large non-motorized platter.

in reply to: My DJ software is __________, and this is why… #12991

My DJ software is Mixxx, and this is why: Well, first, it’s free and open source! The forums are good, and you can get help from the developers and other users, as well as suggest features and everything. And with the latest version, there’s beatgridding, microphone support, sample decks, and those little spinning platter things like in virtual dj (those are fun)
For power users, there’s support for any midi controllers, pretty much all DVS systems, up to 32 hot cues, and a crazy good scripting engine that lets you do all kinds of neat stuff with your controller.
The only downside for me is that the only effect is a flanger 🙁
