    Hi Oyiwaa

Have you heard the HK Audio stuff? Its cheap and cheerful and sounds great for the money!

Have a look at the HK Audio Premium PR:O 18 Sub or the trustie Mackie SUB 1801 I think!

I say the more systems and setups you can learn the better!

Then you do turn volume up to get the right gain structure for the system. The habit also makes you check your volume levels which may have been left very high from a previous gig, and which you hadn’t touched since then.

Ok here’s the confusion, zero to a sound engineer is loud! What you mean is turn it to infinity which is out.

Have good cables and have spare cables.
Turn all volumes to ZERO before startup.
Check your cabling at least twice before turning on.
If you have a PA mixer in your chain, make sure all channel faders are set to zero and the EQs are in the middle and all F/X turned off.
Turn on your gear from inside out (aka laptop -> controller -> mixer (if you have) -> other controllers -> monitors -> PA)
Break down from outside to inside (aka opposite direction from above startup)

Can I just say “turning all volumes to zero” is the worst thing to do. Thats a sound engineers nightmare! To get the best sound out of a system its about gain structure and signal to noise ratio’s. You need to have a even gain structure through your set up otherwise you will end up with a very hissy system or a over driven system.

Here’s a good little article on gain structure, its more for instruments but it gives you a good understanding!

Interesting one, I think it depends on the statement you want to make, a good warm up DJ will structure there set to hit its peak just as the headline act is just about to step up, and i suppose if that means playing a track that is a banger then so be it. I remember playing a gig the first DJ was a trance DJ, he slowly built up a nice warm up set by midnight the floor was bouncing, he handed over to me with a full dance floor baying for more banging trance to which I swiftly started my set with a remix of a bossa nova type jazz track! As predicted everyone stopped looked up at me and 80% walked off the dance floor but within half hour the floor was full again down the right choice of tracks. So I would say don’t be afraid of playing the big guns, if the DJ is worth there money they will be able to whip any audience up into a frenzy!!!

Its a tough one, but you have to take that amazing opportunity. Ask the promotor what kind of stuff the crowd will be expecting, then take it and add your twist to it. If do have an amazing set and the promoter notices it, then theres a lot of potential in the future! Also you never know Mark Ronson may be taking a more upbeat house approach to his new album/DJ sets and in that case you would fit in just fine!

Let Us know how it goes, if you do it!! 😉

I’d be up for our own DJ night but we’re a bit scattered so might be a problem getting a few of us together. I’m about to start promoting myself more to look at getting back in to the clubs. I did a kids party at a club here and they do a Tech House night once a month but are having a refit. That’ll be my first call at trying to get a play out. The mobile gigs pay but if ‘m honest my heart ain’t in it. Let me play House o/
I don’t know if you’ve ever checked it out but http://www.acthook.com/ has a wanted listing for Cardiff which might still be on going

Cheers Si! all registered just need to get some mixes together to send to people! Keep me up to date with whats happening with your gigs!
