ParticipantHi
I have to completely agree with Chuck and Terry, start small develope your skill and see where you want to take your adventure. The SX is a great bit of kit but is it what you need for your style? I have took the same path as most vinyl CDJ’s then 10 year break now a controller but it’s take me this long to even find a set up that fits to my style and how I play, no doubt this will change again with time but that’s the business. The beatmix is a great way to find your feet and see if this is really what you want to do and enjoy it.
It’s not all about the controller it’s about the music.
Also I now live in Melbourne and I use the link below they are the biggest in Aus, all the guys are really know there stuff and will help you out! Also get into the store and try the controllers out! Find one that you like the feel of!

ParticipantJust a quick word of advice on headphones, go and listen to them, I know this sounds stupid but the amount of people I speak to who buy headphones based on hype or recommendations and then complain that they don’t sound great is a common issue. I have Sony MDR’s, Senni 25’s, Beyer Dt’s, too which some people go, I don’t like the sound of them, or not enough bass, or they don’t cut out enough background noise, so just remember they have to fit your ears!
Remember everyone’s hearing is different, everyone’s ears are different shapes and sizes, everyone hears different tones and qualities, so get down to your local shop and take a track you know well and listen to as many as you can. You will feel so much more comfortable with headphones you have chosen and heard.

Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
Bi Monthly or quarterly, I’m thinking about the poor judges, who would have to sit through possibly thousands of entry’s! Also it would be nice to have an big annual comp too!!
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
Yes not sure on how often but I would participate!
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
It should be open but with the themes/setting idea, eg chilled late night mix, peak hour mix, alternative mix etc etc
4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
Meeting the theme, content quality, listenability, dj development from previous mixes/ entries?
5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
Beatport vouchers?
Something that digital dj tips can get out of sponsors/advertisers easily!
The annual winner to play a night somewhere, if possible! Surely Phil can pull some strings!
Or failing that an all expenses paid trip to Phil’s villa lol??

ParticipantHey
You may know his already but you can use Say on the mac and save it as AAC file so you can play it back on what ever software you use. There is also a load of presets to change the pitch and quality of the text. Follow the link below that will give you a bit of a guide!

ParticipantI use iTunes to sort my playlists out for Traktor. I have all my music for work and DJing in iTunes, but I use the genre to identify what type of music it is and if it’s usable for DJing, then simply create smart playlists that will only import what the parameters I’ve told it to search for into that playlist. I know people that do it for BPM as well. Eg 80-90 BPM smart playlist will only import 80-90 BPM tracks, then when you open Traktor all your playlists open too.
But once again it comes down to your own preference, I use it because everything in my house is Apple, with iCloud and itunes match etc. It also suites me because i play across 3 or 4 genres/ bpms so it’s quick and easy for me to be super organised to access all my DJ tracks.

I’m not buying refurbed from apple they cost a small fortune ebay/amazxon are the better places to look in my experience.
Ive always brought new, I would never buy a 2nd hand PC/MAC because you never know what the person before has done to it, I had a friend who had a water damaged MAC which stopped working, then a week later started working again just a lot slower, he sold it on eBay and didn’t declare there was anything wrong, he made a fortune! also the Apple warranty is worth its weight in gold if something goes wrong, which eBay will never provide. As the old saying goes “you pay for what you get”.
Also to be honest if you haven’t got the money for a new or factory refurb’d MB hold out until your gigging, producing music or going to use the MB to its full potential, otherwise it could be an investment that you could end up regretting, its worth just getting a high spec’d PC testing the water, make sure its what you want to do and pursue properly, until you can justify spending the money on a MAC, also when you start to gig it then becomes TAX deductible on your tax return, which a MAC is easier to claim the full cost back than a PC.

ParticipantIts worth having a look on Apples website for refurbished Macbooks some massive bargains on there, but you just need to have the money ready to go because they go fast.
