ParticipantThanks again for the replies guys (I’m a poet & I didn’t know it!)
My Inspiron keeps crashing on me so I really am gonna have to buy a laptop soon so I guess I’m just gonna try and get a Windows 7 version and update to 8 if I have to later on going on your advice.
I’ll be getting a monitor in any case as I’ll use it as a spare tv rather than a new tv so just thinking I may as well get that Dell touch screen while I’m spending the money, and if it comes in handy than it’s a bonus.

ParticipantCheers for the reply.
The main thing with the touch screen is just that I’ve been using multiple screens for radio work I do and it is so handy to have ident/jingle banks on one screen whilst controlling the music on another. I’d like to move up to being able to adapt to using touch screens for this purpose and I suppose I could just as well begin to use it in my gigs in future also…..Obviously I’m not the most expert person technologically, so I’m not quite sure how this would work using a program such as VDJ in any case but it definitely appeals to me.
On the ipad thing, I have worked with windows for so long that crossing over to a Mac device scares me a little which is why I would be apprehensive on that rather than something like the Dell (Although Windows 8 would probably be like learning a new system also at this time!)

ParticipantI am so bloody temted on the mac’s Erik but even just reading your post scares the shi*e out of me! I get constantly frustrated on laptops which I know how to use so the thought of being out of my comfort zone all together on a mac is freaking me out!
Never thought about the dual boot Si so cheers for that….Is that a case of just having two different users set up?

When my last laptop died, the hd drive went, I had to purchase one qucikly so bought a Dell Studio 15. I stripped out all the extras diable any unwanted hardware so it’s configured to be used strictly for DJing and music. I then repaired the old one by replacing the drive and that’s used as the general internet horse.
If your looking for a dedicated DJ windows Laptop rather than an everyday work horse you can have them pre-configured for audio, custom built or configure it yourself (there are guides on Youtube) Illuminated keyboards help. I’d certainly go for as much RAM possible 2Gb minimum, prerably 4Gb to 8Gb (as above stay away from Win8 for now). As you’re running external HDDs the in built one may not matter but SSDs are the way to go.Like you I have a large collection, just under 2Tb but to be honest I could carry off any mobile gig playing music for all ages and taste with 50Gb to 100Gb of music and if I was doing a 4hr club set I’d use a 64Gb flash drive. You’ve either got a lot of WAV’s or enough Mp3 music to play back to back for well over a year : )
Hey Si,
Unfortunately financial restraints mean that I won’t be able to have the laptop just dedicated to the dj’ing so I’ll be doing other stuff on it. Not much else bar editing on adobe for work and using internet but it would probably make a difference I suppose.
I’d definitely like to have an illuminated keyboard like you suggested but don’t know enough about the SSDs as of yet bar what was mentioned in the article I posted earlier from last years website. The info didn’t seem to tipping the balance in any way back then so have things moved on?
And yes I could easily get away with most of my sets on smaller drives but I just have an OCD thing going on with collecting everything hahaha! I’m trying to get every UK single since charts began just for my personal collection but some of its professional as I have had the odd programme controller calling me to give them a track they haven’t got in their station believe it or not! And for the radio stuff I do have to boost many tracks to WAV which as you mention takes up more room.
Cheers for all this feedback guys……Helps that I don’t have to wait for Windows 8 to buy after all of you have said I don’t need it.

ParticipantCheers for this guys.
Rob I was thinking of the article I mentioned when you said about the PC/MAC debate haha http://goo.gl/gIdF3
Its the fact I have never really used an Apple which is making me wary of going for one although from what I’ve heard I would love it. Just not sure I have the patience to learn a new operating system at this stage Terry.
And Stazbumpa, I see you mention Windows 7 but funnily enough I have never used that either as my laptop has always run on Vista. This is why I was asking whether or not to jump straight onto Windows 8 rather than starting out on Windows 7 at this stage?
Cheers again lads.

ParticipantYou have got me thinking now…….Just out of curiosity, I still have my old Denon X-500 mixer not being used now I upgraded to the MC6000, so do you think I should try and hook that up and route through like you do, or just go with the adapter?
After all the years I’ve been in this business……I am still shockingly bad when it comes to the technical stuff! 😉

ParticipantCheers for the reply mate.
Really up sh1t creek now as I’ve ordered the Rode as it was highly recommended from other radio bods and I need that great sound a condenser mic gives for V/O work. I ordered a Skytronic phantom adapter last night hoping it would do the trick but you still seem to think it will be a problem?
Denon forum told me the unit wouldn’t power a phantom mic but didn’t reply about whether the adapter would do the trick.
Thanks again Terry.

Now that i’m living in Ireland, it’s so bloody difficult to get any gear over here (Finally just got a site that would ship me the DN-MC6000!), so who would I look to for custom cases Phil?
Again, thanks so much for this help 🙂

ParticipantJust an extra question guys. I may want to intergrate my DN D9000 CD/MP3 decks with the DN-MC 6000 and laptop, just to be able to use cd’s if the laptop ever crashes………………so is there a coffin or alternative set-up that anyone could recommend for me that would house them all?
Much appreciation, Colm G

ParticipantAny request that contains the sentence….”I promise you it will work”!…………..This irritates the shit out of me, as if my near 15 years experience doesn’t quite qualify me to decide what will work………..I usually end up asking what they do for a living and turning the tables by giving them unrealistic tips for them to think about
Just realised I get moodier the older I get! 😡

ParticipantThalia Thrasher, post: 342 wrote: 6+ hour sets?!?!?!? Rookie question here. As a rocker, my library is mostly rock tunes, but I have been building my DJing library, it’s about 10 hours +, but that’s everything. When you guys are doing marathon sets are you looping one part of a song for an extended period of time? Or do you just have massive libraries and amazing brains?
I know a lot of DJ’s frown upon it but I have a massive library due to the fact I play a lot of genre’s of music. I mainly play commercial clubs which means I like to carry a big database from the present day charts all the way back to the 60’s, hence why i’m crossing over to digital DJ’ing with the new Denon’s, so I can just plug in my 1TB external and make it easier. I also do Drum ‘n’ Bass, House & Garage some nights……and Rock mixed with Irish tunes other nights, depending on where i’m playing.

ParticipantWill, post: 271 wrote: I just want to pitch in that I actually have the DN-MC6000. Great unit, I couldn’t imagine using anything else to start with. A question though: are you getting one or two? You only need one unit, it has control over 4 decks.
Denon has trouble fulfilling orders worldwide. I had to wait a month for my MC to come in, but it’s well worth the wait.
Only getting one! I know I said “them”, but I always say that about decks 😉
They are in stock on 30th June so should have them in a couple of weeks. What software are you using? As I mentioned above, my trainee had Virtual DJ which I was ok with, but I know in Europe they are shipping with Traktor which I have limited knowledge of.
Cheers for the help
