    When i’m playing to a commercial crowd at my residency i can’t really go wrong but the track that always catches them is Afrojack – Take over control.

    At my underground nights, i have a bunch unreleased Chris Lake tracks that i play that always saves the dancefloor or anything from Stefano Noferini at the moment.

    Everybody has valid points here to be honest..

    I have about 800+ records and some of them i haven’t played in years but will never throw out. But as for my digital files, the things i have deleted is tracks that i will never play in a DJ set because it is music that doesn’t fit my DJ style (new romantic stuff for example and im a house DJ). And all the music from years ago i do want to keep i have kept and all the stuff i may want to play or may have to play i still have even if i don’t like it.. Also i have CD back ups of quite a lot of stuff. 🙂

    When i was looking through my tracks i was thinking ‘i bought that remix but have only played it once in 3 years.. *delete*’. After a few hours i had narrowed it down to tracks i did like, tracks i thought were ok and tracks i hated but might need. I am now a happy man with a more organised music collection.

    First of All zippyshare ain’t illegalpeople put their illegal stuff there… and not even everything you see on youtube is up on zippyshare and vice-versa…and why do you say youtube is legall and zippyshare is not? there is many stuff on youtube that is illegal (why would they remove videos?. is it because youtube doesn’t have a download button??? my friend if Prof. Deusc wants to download ILLEGALLY is youtube the best way? (lack of sound quality is one of the things i’m refering to, because if he want’s to, there are many programs that do so)…

    I was just trying to help Prof. Deusc…. why did you went on and say what you said anyway?

    Best Wishes

    To be honest, i 100% agree with what you said, i should have explained what i said more in depth instead of being short and sharp.. I just think zippyshare encourages illegal downloads compared to youtube’n a song but i am well aware that youtube doesn’t have everything that you need and that most can be illegal uploads etc.

    I cant really help you with the points 1 and 2 (as you can see in my signature) but i can try to help you with number 3…

    What i do is a little thing i like to call research (many people say it’s “the homework”…

    you start with finding some blogs (that have a music genre or many, that fits you) about music and then you listen to the songs in the blog… if the blog doesnt have the option of buying the song you just go to Beatport, Itunes or something like that and buy it.

    Another way i usually do it is writting the following on google:

    site:zippyshare.com (Put name of artist/remixer/producer/Etc.)

    Why use an illegal site like zippyshare when you can legally youtube it.

    Prof. Deusc, post: 3078 wrote: Hey,
    as many of you know, I’m in the DJ world since about a week only, but as I always do I’m already thinking months ahead.
    I have some question to ask:
    1- how long does a “normal”gig last (in a club)?
    2- how many songs do you play in a night?
    3- how do you know new songs? I’m using top 2011 and some top 2010 for now, but I don’t think i can reach a decent number of songs if I use only “tops”, not even if I go back in the days like 1995 😎

    I’m asking you these things because I’d like to begin getting closer to the world, like djing for hours without breaks, using headphones for hours and so on… Even tough I can’t simulate the most important thing: stage fright…

    Welcome to the DJ world first of all..

    Now onto your questions

    1. It can last from anything from half an hour to about 6 hours. I’v actually did a 9 hour shift, but usually do 2-4 hour shifts.
    2. Depends if you are a club or disco DJ (im guessing you are club). So again, this can vary depending on your mixing style.. If you let a song play out or cut and chop it up.
    3. Unless you are DJ’n to a commercial/top40 club my advice is to search out with the top 40’s etc and find your own tracks to make your own set unique. If you DJ top 40/commercial search blogs, DJ mixes, radio shows etc etc and you will find the ‘next big track’.

    Good luck!

    Id keep everything on an external drive, nothing goes unless its rubbish and was downloaded in a fit of madness or corrupted.

    Id agree with keeping the amount of tunes on the lappy manageable tho..

    I used to think the same as you until it got to a point where i hadn’t listened to an album for about 7 years so just started deleting stuff.. Never regretted it!

    Also i normally keep between 10 and 50 tunes on my iMac/Macbook at all times.

    That’s good to hear Phil. Just last week i deleted about 2000 legally purchased songs.. A lot of money wasted but i am very satisfied, i now know what and where i have stuff! 🙂

    The only time i come across musicians we always have a understanding that they are good and talented at what they do and i am good at what i do. So it’s quite good and level headed.

    How Do ‘You’ Prepare Yourself Psychologically for Your DJ’ing ?
    Does Your Gear have to be ‘Set Up’ in a Particular Manner;
    Do You have ‘Equipment’ that has become your Tools and you ‘Must’ use;
    Do You Take Some ‘Time’ to Relax Psychologically Before you ‘Perform’ and How Much;
    Do You have a Ritual that you Follow Before you ‘Leave Home’; or Begin Mixing ‘At Home’;
    How Much Time (if any) do You take to Practice Your ‘Art’;
    Do You ever Read or Follow Tutorials to ‘Better Your Best Practice’

    Any Further Preparations I have Not Mentioned are Very Welcome 😎

    Good thread indeed Emma!
    – My gear doesn’t have to be setup in a certain manner (surprisingly as i have OCD). But i do prefer Techs on the outside CDJs on the inside..
    – Tools i must use is my Sennheiser HD25’s, i physically can’t use any other headphones now. Also i can’t use anything apart from CDJ1000 mk3’s no more when gigging.
    – I do tend to relax and chill out a little, often by chilling having a pizza for an hour or sitting downloading new tracks.
    – Ritual, yes indeed, i have a mix while im getting ready and burning my last few tracks then i follow certain steps packing my bags.
    – Hard one to pinpoint. I practice a lot. Some weeks can be more than others.
    – Erm not so much now, as i have a lot of well hooked up talented mates that i regularly play with so just watch them and practice new things.

    Do you do any of this Emma?

    – Also, do any of you guys have something that you must have with you while DJ’n but non related to your performance?

    OLD: No EQ’s on the mixer!

    NEW: No effects on the mixer!

    Phil Morse, post: 1899 wrote: You can have up to four samples per channel you give up and control them independently, so you get more flexibility than just having a sample track loaded on a deck with some cue points pointing at the samples you want to use. You can also record straight into the loop recorder then transfer your recording to a sample deck – whether that’s part of a track or your own voice. So there is the chance to get more creative with them than just dropping samples from a 3rd and/or 4th deck.

    I totally understand this, and as i said they sound like a fantastic idea for people that will put it to use. Infact i think it would be brilliant to watch someone use this to potential but i just like a third deck and long blends of tunes with acapellas and added simple effects. But thats my preference 😉

    Are they? I personally think the 6’s are ok for general listening.. They are not the best but quite good compared to other ones, for example i thought the Mackie MR5’s were too bass heavy. But as i said and ellieff said, bang for buck is brilliant.

    Just to make sure we’re clear, this is a genuine question. I’m not stirring or trying to wind people up – is there something you can do with the sample decks that I can’t do with a sample loaded to the fourth deck?

    Coloured waveforms don’t do that much for me. The waveform I used to read off the record didn’t have no colour :p

    To be honest you said this exactly how i wanted to say it…!! 🙂

    I don’t dislike the whole sample deck thing as i think its a fantastic idea for people that can put it to good use, but me personally don’t need it yet, and often when i do use samples i often use vinyl samples of samples from old CD’s from years ago.

    I currently use KRK Rokit 6’s for my DJ setup and looking into either Genelecs, KRK VXT6’s or Adams A7x’s for my studio set up. The KRK is great bang for buck.
