I think this is a good start. I echo the earlier comment about the problem with the key and the build-ups. It is quite noticeable, but then it goes away when the beat starts. Of course it comes back again, but like you said it’s just a start.

Though this thread is a few months old as someone who is seeking to do their own first event I would love to know how this has gone…

I imagine you are a DJ yourself. Though coming down early is a good thing, the real test is when there are actual people in the venue. If you have an early slot that is prime-time for experimental tracks. And what is more experimental than a track of your own?

That vocal makes it sound pretty dark. It’s a well produced track, reminding me of German type Techno in places.

When it goes into that bit with the bassline that is speed-garage reminiscent I wasn’t expecting that. I had it down as jazzy/quirky. All the better for taking you where you don’t expect it to go!

I enjoyed the track. It’s pretty funky. When that bassline kicked in I thought it was a bit overpowering. I was listening to it on headphones. Then I listened to it on my monitors. It wasn’t quite as noticeable, but it is very noticeable, but I guess that is what you are going for?

If Eliah Holiday is your real name that would be an awesome name to use. Me personally I prefer name that sound like a real person, but not quite. Calvin Harris is a prime example. You’s think it was his real name, but it gives you a blanket to hide under if necessary. I think when you are establishing yourself you don’t want anything pretentious. But Eliah, Elias or Elijah Holiday/Halliday etc fits that perfectly.

The re-edit of Underworld/Bruce Lee is cool. Sounds cold. I guess it’s probably the picture you put up but the tune and your DJ mix is very wintery sounding!

    Hi

Thanks for putting me up on the fact that Eddie Murphy has a new album coming. When I first saw the first track of the mix I was definitely wondering! In a good way it reminds me of a set by Diplo. I guess it’s the bit where it goes to Moombahton.

It’s an interesting question. Maybe you could change your name permanently if you think it could be a regular occurrence in the future? Just looking at the names one would assume you were part of the same collective. Are you? Or just mates?
My DJ name is unique for a DJ, but sounds cartoony! I love it though! I still think the name Megaman, out of the So-Solid Crew (for international fans they were a big collective who took UKG overground with “21 Seconds”. Megaman was the leader. There were 30+ of them) is brilliant. So I wanted a similar name. Hence Johnni Lightning!

    Thank you for the greetings

An indication of the type of style I make/DJ/want to make in the future can be found at https://soundcloud.com/johnni-lightning/o-sifuni-mungu-praise. Though I was born in Reigate, Surrey (just like dance duo Disclosure, dubstep DJ N-Type and Fatboy Slim) my Mum is from Uganda and my Dad is from Tanzania. I wanted to mix the sounds I grew up with and pay tribute to my African heritage. In London, especially amongst kids, Afrobeats is extremely popular. I think that is as a number are second generation kids, born in the UK, to African parents.
