ParticipantHey Matt, any idea how you download your mashup? I’ve clicked on the Download link a heap of times, joined the site etc etc and still don’t seem to be able to download it!
Josh
ParticipantHey John,
I know you’ve got a ton of advice already. I’ve faced the same thing you are and while I wouldn’t say I’ve nailed it yet – partially because, as others have stated, there is a such a huge genre blur now that it’s sometimes damn tough to differentiate – but…. use Beatport, Trackitdown, whatever you like. Use their genre filters and then either listen to all of the current top 10 songs OR switch to the top 100 (if available) and then hit the play all. It won’t be the panacea for your issue but it will help you to be a lot more accurate when listening to a track for the first time and being able to say it’s this genre or that genre.Having said all that I like to listen to and buy tracks based on a simple motto – a good track that gets the blood pumping is a good track – genre doesn’t matter! And I think unless you’re gigging at a venue where the night you are playing at is expecting a set genre… you can genre hop. Just listen to a Laidback Luke set…. tell me if he plays any one genre more than another!!!
Anyway hopefully my thoughts help somehow.

ParticipantHi guys,
Once again massive thumbs up to everyone for their suggestions and advice. I haven’t done a mix yet but I spent some time last night and discovered that maybe I have more of an idea about beat matching than I thought. I switched the phase meter off and changed the display in Traktor so that I could only see the Track BPM and the adjusted BPM if I expand the decks display.Initially I grabbed one of my favourite tracks of all time (Everything In Its Place by Evol Waves) and basically manually beat matched. Obviously no pitch adjustment required but fairly quickly I had that almost perfect. Next I kept that track on one deck and picked up a another track which was 4bpm different. I cued up the first beat and away I went, moving the platter, listening, adjusting the pitch and repeat. Turns out the track I’d chosen was quite hard to hear the the beats (sounds stupid… maybe it’s just my ears).
Anyway it’s going to take a lot more practice (which I’m keen to do) but all of the advice above has helped heaps and I think I’m on my way.
Oh and Sunjalo and D-Jam your comments have both been noted too!! Really keen to do a lot more with the remix decks (however limited that will be by using a keyboard and mouse) and using loops and stuff.
Cheers guys… have a good’n.

ParticipantCheers guys, I didn’t know you could disable all of that info (and thanks for the correct term for the phase meter Hee) in Traktor. Will do that and give it a go.
Actually one other question. I know that CDJ’s have the BPM info displayed on them but I am curious of the process “real DJ’s” go through when working on CDJ’s. For instance if I were playing a 128bpm track and the next track I was putting on was 130bpm obviously I can increase the pitch of the current track or decrease the pitch of the next track. But it’s the beat matching process I’m interested in. Let’s presume I’m going to decrease the pitch on the 130bpm track to 128, would you set it on the CDJ, then cue it up and see if it matches or do you completely ignore what the CDJ is telling you and just cue it up and start the beat match process immediately? Just curious how much ‘real’ dj’s actually take advantage or rely on the info provided by CDJ’s.
Cheers

ParticipantYou need to get this to Laidback Luke…. he would so slot this into one of his sets!
Josh
ParticipantThat is AWESOME!!! I love different stuff… thinking outside the box! Who would have thought…. congrats on a great effort.

ParticipantWow, you did that MIK Mashup Software! Impressive. There was only one spot, at about the 2 minute which didn’t sound quite right but it was such a fragment of the song that it doesn’t matter! Perhaps the vocals around the 4:30 mark could be brought in a little gentler…. but really that’s being picky.
Great job…. I’m embarking on my first mash-up at the moment. It aint easy… well not for me!
Josh
ParticipantHey Komodo… welcome to Melbourne. I too have spent hour after hour browsing these forums and articles. I’m probably a bit out of your age bracket but if you want someone local to listen to your mix or whatever drop me a line.

ParticipantNo worries at all!
Josh
ParticipantNice work! I’ve always wanted to do what you’ve done (not necessarily with this piece of music…. but mix classical with dance – it just seems to work!). IMO the start to me was a little off. Sounds like the timing of the classical didn’t quite work with the tempo of the percussion. But from the middle section – about 1:55 in onwards (and even more so from about 2:40 onwards) – I thought it was a great track. Hope that helps.

ParticipantHey David, nice work mate. Overall quite liked it. I thought at the 50sec mark there was way too much going on but given you remixed it live that’s just a fraction of the song where there was an issue. Anyway nice work if you ask me!

ParticipantI’m probably a little late to this discussion but I won some Pioneer HDJ-500s in December last year. In about May this year cracks started to appear in the headband and I can now say they are literally held together by electrical tape – and I’m not even a real DJ (just a home one!). I’ve heard similar experiences from a lot of people so I’d say be very very careful with them if you go with the Pioneer. Sound wise I love them but my experience with headphones isn’t very broad. Hope that helps.
