MemberThanks for the comments people.
I will admit I struggled to find the right music for the mood during warm-up, as I’m usually used to playing in the last/later slot/s. I’ll also admit I *may* have accidentally hit the cue button on the wrong deck at one point 😳
But I thank the fact that – a) I was sober and b) I brought my own controller, I didn’t rely on someone else’s gear.
Hopefully I’ll get re-booked at some point, but I’ll have to ask for a better slot…. 😀

MemberHaha, cheers Drew.
Also forgot to mention, the 2nd DJ forgot his headphones too :p
Also thought I had some bad mixes, as the venue has no booth monitors and I couldnt hear anything except the bass comeing from the subs 2m away from me. Need to mix with the cans some more 😀

MemberWell the Patrick you might want to check out the Denon DN-MC6000, that’s a pretty sweet unit – not only is it a 4 deck controller, it’s a 4 channel stand-alone mixer, so you can plug in CDs, vinyl, whatever into it – and you dont even need your computer running! (what is great for those house parties) It also come with VDJ free if you are in Canada/US.
Also take at look at the Vestax VCI-100/300 – while they come with Traktor/Itch, VDJ does have stock mappings for both, so it’s virtually plug and play there too. (And I know Phil can vouch for the VCI-300!)
My advice would be to head down to your local music store, and ask them if you can have a play on what you’re intersted in. You might prefer one or the other, but you just have to use them to know!
Any other questions, feel free to ask! 😀

Member4x CDJ2000s, DJM2000 mixer, Traktor Scratch Pro, 2x Kontrol X1s and, oooh, maybe a Maschine or Midi-fighter to round it off?
If you want some useful help Patrick, give us something to work with. How long you’ve been DJing, what kind of music you like to play, whether you have a preference for any particuluar software or setup option (DVS, controller, CDJs etc). Also a budget would help as well. Simply asking “what setup should I buy” will get you instantly hated on in some forums.
So how long have you been DJing, what do you like to mix, whats your budget and do you have any preferances for anything?

MemberCheers, it makes me breath easier knowing that. 😀
I just hope I can tune my computer well enough to get rid of any problems which may pop up with the S4.
Thanks for all your help guys!

MemberOK, so I’ve been doing my research on this one. NI states on their website that the minimum specs are:
“Windows® XP (latest Service Pack, 32 Bit), Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 (latest Service Pack, 32/64 Bit),
Intel® Pentium 4® 2.4 GHz or Intel® Coreâ„¢ Duo or AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64, 2 GB RAMMac OS® X 10.5 or 10.6 (latest update), Intel® Coreâ„¢ Duo, 2 GB RAM”
Note is says or for the processors. So is this a minimum spec or will the software ONLY work on those processors?
If you have run Windows and the S4 on a i3/5/7 processor, I’d love to hear from you that it works….

MemberSo it only took a few months to have the classic Mac vs PC mud-slinging match 🙂
For the record, I use a PC, and if it’s maintained well, it shouldnt give you any problems.
But I would still love a Mac, yet I have a one year old (and powerful) PC – so my student status definatly doesnt allow me to go out buying new laptops…. Windows will have to do…..

MemberA beat roll. Usually an effect, called Beatmasher in Traktor, and the Beatgrid in VDJ.
And some are better than others…..

MemberHmmm, I’m planning on buying a S4, but I have a XPS 1645 with 6GB RAM, and a 1.6GHz i7 quad-core CPU – do you think I’ll still have problems?
Cheers
EDIT: Oh yeah, 64-bit Windows & too…..

MemberUninstall anivirus! Noooooo!
Personally, I just kill everything which is not music related, restart the laptop (for fresh RAM) turn off Wi-Fi and only plug in what is needed for DJing.
Also, it can help to tune your computer using a program called LatencyMon. It picks up things which can also increase latency within the computer too.

MemberJust wondering, has anybody mucked around with the Controller Manager that comes with Traktor?
I had a quick look at it but it only has NI hardware in the program, and I’m yet to buy NI hardware…

Haha, good job Benny. 😀 Only problem is that Mike now has to fork out for the Pro version – I’m pretty sure LE cant handle this kinda set-up…

MemberOk, cheers. I may as well go ahead and buy, I know a place which is still giving the free scratch upgrade till August 23rd 😀
Looks like it might just be a case of tuning the hell out of my computer…

MemberI’ve looked at the DJTT S4 bag, and it looks very good – apart from the fact it’s almost never in stock!

Agreed. It doesnt matter what tools you use, as long as the end result sounds awesome and pleases the crowd!
Hell, musical innovation with technology is what started DJing in the first place, and this spirit still has a place in today’s DJing. Just looks at people like Ean Golden or Moldover, they’re making amazing music from are effectivly improvised instruments. Now that’s not what I aspire to, not fading between two tunes on wax….
