    Harmonic Mixing was an Absolute Revelation to me;
    Until I read the Review on DDDT (The Second Review); I wasn’t interested in finding the Small Amount it Costs; and just Ignored the Possibility of what it could do for me;
    Now; I Seriously Wouldn’t Be Without It;
    Once I have Renamed my Tracks; before even Using them in any Software; I put the Tracks Through Miked In Key;
    Beatmatching (or even just BPM Matching) is Cool; but there is No Way – unless you are prepared to sit down with a Keyboard on Every Track you Own to Work Out The Key; which I Definitely Wasn’t (even though I am Musically Trained – or at least my Certificate says so :)); but the Realisation that 2 Tracks will Actually Mix Together and you Never have to Worry about ‘Trainwrecking’ through ‘Key Clashes’ is like having your Eyes (Ears) Opened For The First Time; … How could I Possibly have Known that The Prodigy Mixes Harmonically with Ricky Martin ? (Just a Hypothetical Question); but to Know/Realise that they Do; is Nothing Short Of Amazing when you Hear it for the First Time; and so; although I use Mixed In Key as a ‘Guidline’; rather than a ‘Be All and End All’; the Concern/Worry about whether 2 Tracks will ‘Clash’ is Literally Gone Forever :cool:;
    Our Ears Are Our Ultimate Tool Of Course; and so No Software is Perfect; but if Mixed In Key gets it Wrong in 1 out of 200 Attempts; that is Money Well Spent in my Book 🙂

    Thanks Emma, think I’ll give it a go – I’ll let you know what I think!

    😉

    Cheers Phil,

    Am I going to run into metadata problems again with my WAVs?

    Oh yeah – thanks Phil, that response wasn’t there earlier – I’ll have a play.

    Don’t know about you but I have a really bad habit of not reading instruction manuals…… 😳

    Just found this on the Pioneer forums, looks like I’m not the only one unimpressed with the ‘upgrade’ …..

    Yeah, it’s not quite LE but not Pro either, but what I’ve seen has not convinced me to upgrade to Pro…

    I always used Soundforge but when I switched to a Mac was surprised that it isn’t available on Mac. I have Twisted Wave running on the Mac and it does everything I want – pretty similar to Soundforge to be honest.

    Well, got a chance to have a play with it last night and…… I can’t stand it! I ended up switching back to the old version. It felt clunky, the pitch didn’t seem to work right (and there’s no pitch fader display) – I fail to see any advantages whatsoever.

    Disappointed. :confused:

    I would also like to expand on my original comment about genres:

    I fully believe that because of the pigeonholing of dance music, it becomes expected that if you are going to make an acid skiffle funk track or whatever you will use x, y and z sounds, which will be familiar and therefore appeal to the buyer of that genre. I’ve found myself doing it – you listen to a track and like it, then realise that the reason you like the snippet you heard was because the elements were familiar. Actually, the records that have had the most longevity with me are often the ones that took a while to grow on me – probably they were unfamiliar elements but ultimately their originality leads to them remaining in the record box far longer than last weeks generic deep house buys.

    I remember when House music first exploded in this country and the clubs that were playing this stuff would play all sorts – you would hear Detroit techno next to Italo pianos next to The Stone Roses next to all sorts of stuff – we didn’t know the genres back then, it was all just House music.

    I had to schedule it for a later read at home so I could take the info. in properly, hence the late thanks – hope you didn’t think me ungrateful. 🙂

    I have mixed feelings… I taught myself to beatmatch over 20 years ago (scary…) and your ears become that tuned to it that you can do it very quickly. Before I got my DDJ I thought sync was cheating and even when I first got it I refused to use Sync, but I have found that I beatmatch the tracks and the BPM display shows what it would in sync anyway (OK, sometimes it a percentage of a bpm out!) so I question the point of doing it manually…

    What I do think is important is monitoring the incoming track before mixing it in, manual beat matching forced you to do this and it’s very valuable in terms of reminding you what happens when in the track, plus you get an idea of how the harmonics sit next to each other. Back in the day there would be many a record that I thought would sound great in my head but then I aborted while monitoring / beatmatching because it was apparent that it wouldn’t work.

    Currently I do a bit of both, but if the computer ever gets it wrong, or I had to play vinyl I’m confident that it wouldn’t be a problem.

    I couldn’t actually gain the information from the Article about what ‘Metadata’ Actually ‘is’;
    So I ‘Hope’ that this rather Technical Information may be of some Assistance 🙂

    Thanks Emma, that’s comprehensive info. 😀
