And actually what’s far more important than the mix is playing the right tune at the right time.

Yeah, it’s not as black and white as that, I think.

It’s a good tool but not prescriptive. What it does do is help eliminate those times when you cue something up in your headphones and then think, nope that clashes.

It can also give you inspiration to try mixing things that you are unlikely to have considered.

In answer to the first post, of course all mixes don’t need to be harmonically sound. All mixes don’t have to be in the same bpm range either. In fact, there are no rules – if it sounds good, it sounds good.

Usually an hour or two of an evening once a week.

I find the difficult bit limiting myself to just buying a few tracks!!! With music so cheap and accessible these days it’s easy to go overboard…

I commend you for putting the time in to learn in these days of sync buttons and such.

Import 12’s are shrinkwrapped so you have to open the shrinkwrap to get to the record. You can either struggle along picking at it with your fingers or do it the cool way by giving the edge a quick swipe back and forth on your thigh – the friction opens the end nice and neat allowing you to slip the record out. 😎

You know what I miss about buying records?

Being passed a crisp, virginal, shrinkwrapped import across the counter and opening the shrinkwrap by quickly swiping the edge of the sleeve along my jeans.

Always a sign that you were ‘in the know’

    😀

If you fancy going a bit old school, look up anything by Murk – Karen Pollack – You Can’t Touch Me is a good starting point.

Forget about beatgrids, four decks, effects etc and pretend you’ve just got the tools from back then – two decks a mixer and a load of tunes prior to us being forced to put things in pigeonholes.

Oh and learn to scratch like Nipper!
