PS: At some point you will have (assuming you are an audio head):
* Reference headphones for production – HDJ2000
* DJ headphones for DJ:ing – HDJ2000
* Good earbuds for personal listening – JVC Marshmellows
* Cheap headphones for average wear-and-tear (for the gym) – Sennheiser ear clip headphones
* And musician earplugsThat’s how it goes.

ParticipantI build my sets on a per night basis…utilizing what i know of the evening and building my set accordingly.
I am a bit of a Beatport/DJtrax junkie and always look for that hidden gem that i dont have in my library of music.
I try to keep my main song library around 1000-2000 tracks and just add and remove when i have time.

ParticipantIMO you should start using Itunes a lot more for building sets and playlist etc. Then use your DJing software library to navigate the playlists you have already created.
Library should be almost the last thing that you should be worrying about when it comes to your choice of DJ software.

ParticipantI would suggest something like the Kontrol S2 or the S4…personally i would go for the S4 as it is more of a standard controller layout (actual filter knobs and not having to use shift…is a huge game changer for me)
Then once you have gotten really comfortable with that i would suggest something like the DDJ-SX and make a good mapping or use Vipers mapping on DJ Tech Tools.
To this day the best controller for Traktor is the S4 or the S2.

ParticipantThe system you have is a great house party small party system…but imo a house party and a club are 2 very different things.
A house party of 200 is very different than a club of 200.
A house party space has 200 people all around the house…and not concentrated in 1 area.
As well acoustics are totally different, a lot of clubs do not have 9′ ceilings and have a space of 11ft-18ft ceilings….this extra 2-8 feet can really make the sound dissipate. As well most houses are constructed with GWB and Insulation, the insulation and walls help deflect the sound and will make the sound “bounce” back and will create additional sound that is not true from the speakers.
Typically any house party the largest room is 20×20 lets say…with a ceiling of 9′ You now have a volume(measurement) area of space to fill. The closer the walls you have to the sound the more the sound will well sound lol.
Its like having a party out doors for people…there is nothing for the sound to bounce from so u need 2 to 3x amount of speakers to fill a space of roughly the same amount of people in doors.

ParticipantTraktor,
You can download a free 30 day demo off the native instruments website.

ParticipantThe specs i found indicate that it only has 250 RMS. Maybe a typo? As well it says the Sub has a low pass filter? WTF??? im totally lost on this part.
http://www.commsandsound.com/qtx-sound-qt18sa-smwa18-active-sub-18inch-1000w.html
A couple of things u should look for in an Active Subwoofer, does it have a limiter, (you should get a sub that has one in case u make any mistakes, and it wont blow the sub), and lastly Durability.
I really really really must stress the importance of buying quality over quantity. The money you spend on a system is pretty much directly related to the quality of the item. Dont cheap out on something that you will have to get fixed or doesnt work perfectly 100% of the time. Having to spend money on repairs not only costs you money…but could end up costing you gigs.
We learned this the hard way…we decided to pick up 2 mackie subs instead of the yamahas cuz they were 150 less per sub…and we ended up having to get them repaired like 3 times…thank god we had the extended warrenty and were able to trade them in and spend the extra cash on the yamahas.
Oh and when possible, buy from an actual store…it is a lot easier to get things RMA’ed and fixed if u know the people u are buying from instead of joe blow that is online and only wants to make the sale.

Participantopen Traktor, then open the S4 utility control panel program
Check to see what ur sample rate is set to…you want to go around 192 bits and if need be increase your USB buffer to 1 or 2 ms.

ParticipantBest Bang for your buck…i agree with…not denying that.
But they do not compare to something like the SRM450v2s. ( Mackie Subs suck balls on the other hand)
I have a hard time believing that 1-550 watt loud speaker and 1-1800 production sub will bang out a 200 person venue…a really hard time believing that.
Having used everything from Studio monitors to 40k PK Sound systems…I like to think i know a few things regarding Speaker setups…and what you say just doesnt really ring true for me.
Even if you are able to shake the house with 1 550 watt loud speaker and 1 1800 production sub…the lifespan of those 2 speakers is going to be VERY short.
The Value of a great speaker isnt just the sound quality and affordability, its also how long will they last you?

ParticipantI didnt see if this was in the OP but are you playing at the same club, just for someones birthday…so technically, you are the promoter for the evening/DJ and they are just having the birthday party there? Is the venue involved in anyway between yourself and the birthday party? If thats the case then this is a little different but, If you are being hired outside of a venue, you are a mobile DJ and the rules for a Mobile DJ change dramatically than a club DJ. Playing requests and playing what the people who are paying you want is key. You need to be able to play any assortment of music. As well it is good practice at this point to start getting basic contracts setup between yourself and the client.
It is always a hassle and some people go about the whole “you dont trust me? I dont want to sign a contract”
You can just use the whole, hey man it just keeps both of us on the same page, and brush it off on someone else like, im sorry man it keeps us on the same page, and i hate to do it but the owner of my promo company requires that any gigs we take have to be in contract for like tax purposes and stuff so we have actual records ( even if u are owner, and sole proprieter)
Payment, make sure that if you have a set payment, that you recieve 50% of the payment up front…people tend to do stupid things when they get too drunk, dont need to be a dick about it, but this is a job for you, and your job is to make sure they are having fun.
I did this car show once outside in a empty parking lot, our fee for 6 hours including equipment was 500, as it was a favor for another friend of mine. Playing nothing but oldies and classic rock…yay for pushing play…no talent required at all…im pretty sure if i had a monkey for a couple of weeks i could have taught it to DJ this mobile gig :D.
They wanted us to play till 3pm, but they asked us to play for another hour. We charged an extra 150 for the 1 hour, and since we had done a great job with good music they didnt even balk at the extra 150.
Be fair, but be firm, dont get used and abused.

Yeah and that directly relates to having multiple companies that manufacture the same thing.
I do love my MBP and my Alienware…its like the whole daughter and son thing…i love them both and they are both good at different things.

For the Holidays I am purchasing my first portable PA system for gigs that would have around 100-200 people at Frat Houses and small venues. I have been doing a little research and have found a few deals for the Behringer 215d. They seem like a user friendly and good sounding system and I was wondering if anyone else has used them before? Any recommendations are appreciated but I am mostly looking for feedback towards the 215d! Thank you
I make it a point to never by Behringer anything. They are low end systems…usable but low end.
For Monitors i to this day still think the Mackie SRM450s are the goto monitors value, quality and price point.

ParticipantYou can change what type of input the deck is…click on the deck (a b c or D) and it will have a drop down menu for either Live input(ipod/cdj/etc.) remix deck or track deck.
These can be switched on the fly whenever you need.

ParticipantOh and something thats gonna destroy some of my credibility…my Alienware has lots of flashy lights that glow a bunch of different colors…and lets face it we all love glowy flashy colors while up on stage 😀

ParticipantI just laughed when i read about WIP banning traktor…really i think its more of a publicity stunt to get people talking about their promo company than any actual action being taken with regards to banning traktor.
You have some of the worlds biggest DJs, Ritche Hawtin, Carl Cox, John Aquaviva, Shiftee, Mstrkrft, the list goes on and on and on of famous DJs that use Traktor, really WIP you are going to refuse Ritchie Hawtin to play since he uses Traktor?
Hell id be surprised if a company like WIP could even afford to bring Ritchie Hawtin to their venue.
After a few minutes of looking at their website and facebook…i havent even recognized a single name within the last 6 months of DJs they have brought it…now im not saying that i am the GOD of knowing DJs and producers…but you would think if they were a large enough company they would be bringing in some bigger names.
by WIP stating what they did…they have just made themselves look like idiots…the actual comment that was made regarding them banning traktor has actually been removed off their sites…
