Kinda confused here…dont know if u are agreeing or disagreeing with me lol…I do always build my sets…but i always have other tracks if shit doesnt go the way i want it to….Being a resident is fine cuz people come to expect your sound…but what happens when ur a Guest DJ…like a Guest DJ in a top40 club in a different city? when all you play is underground?

Well it can got 1 of 2 ways…you bang your stuff out and people go ape shit….or you realize that its not working at all and be ready to jump to top 40 remixes.

You will start to feel stagnent i know i have gotten into that rut before.

To be honest i was actually feeling in that rut as of late in the last 2-3 months…Its been a while since i had played out since i was concentrating on the Promoting aspect of my company.

Just this weekend We brought in DJ Icey to Calgary and Edmonton…and it was just mind blowing…I got to open for him in Edmonton and the man himself told me that i knew how to bang shit out.

Hearing that really made me want to step up my game and start doing more and more shows again.

Its really hard to get into that rut because u dont really know where your DJing is really going. Finding that direction and always pushing towards it will give you that drive you need.

Can anyone do a comparison on sound quality?
I still to this day find the S4 not as comparable to CDJs…i have done a million little tweaks and i can get my S4 to sound ALMOST CDJ quality but it still does lack a little bit and it is definately noticeable.

Im going to be shifting to a DJM800 and 2 CDJ2000s in HID mode pretty soon, just for the ease of setting up at shows and so i dont have to bring my S4 with me everywhere i go.

As much as i love the DDJ-SX…once it gets here it may end up never leaving my home DJ booth.

Okay…at least this gives me some insight.

I do things totally differently, and i like being able to change my set on the fly if need be…and with my S4 i always use browser mode to load my tracks up…so im totally used to switching modes between tracks.

I always organize my folders of music by the dates i have downloaded the music so i have like a memory lane of folders all organized by month date and year…its nice when im not doing anything i can go look through my folders and see what i loved a year ago.

As i play a lot of different genres it is impossible for me to organize my folders by such and use Itunes for it.

But hey neither here nor there what ever works for you works for you…and thats the most important part.

Yeah i think its really hard for us to get rid of the DJ Nerves…I’m still nervous as shit some days…tonight im opening for DJ Icey in a different city and im nervous as shit…lol…but after a few drinks and getting into the groove of the night i am totally okay :D.

I find the most nervous i get is when im playing in a New Venue…it is just crazy on the nerves.

With Itunes integrating with most of the DJ software its kind of a waste to not use it. I mean with Smart playlists, a plethora of fields to utilize it is really easy to find any track you are looking for.

I’m just curious…what do you guys find is wrong with the Traktor library system?

Not that its a big deal cuz i do 95% of my work in itunes creating smart playlists and spend copious amounts of time making sure all my songs are properly tagged and have grouping/genre/feel/key all filled out properly…that finding tracks in Traktor is just super easy…espically with the search function. (Used to be a boy scout) lmao

What are your gripes, and complaints…as i dont really see the difference between serato and Traktor when it comes to library mangement…mind you like i said i just use my playlists i have created in Itunes.

I always like to mix things up in my sets…and its actually amazing how much energy can be created by going from like a Really all over the place Complextro track into a big room Progressive track.

A few tips though when doing stuff like this:

Each Genre of House music is mixed differently and you should use that to your advantage.

Tech-House/House/Deep House – Layer your tracks..if u are using a 4 channel controller try layering 3 tracks together…it sounds amazing if eqed rigght

Progressive/Dutch/Big Room House – Intro to First build mixing – A lot of these songs have really looonnngg build ups…and tend to have a very 4 beat feel during the drop/Body of the song(4 beats repeated on a 32 beat pattern). The issue with these tracks is a lot of punters dont know what to do doing a 64 or more beat build…thats where u can add in the intro drums of your next track sampling and looping etc.

Electro/Complextro – Really hard to blend 2 tracks for a long duration and is better suited to 32 beat blend and cuts…A lot of people have problems mixing electro songs together other than doing the basic intro outro mixing…a good way to get out of this is to find segments of the song that do go back to a close to basic drum 32 beat pattern, toss that into a loop and begin mixing your next track, or doing quick cuts and doing a double drop.

Those are the majority of the house types of music that i can think of.

Oh and another little helpful tip…dont switch genres too quickly…let the punters get a feel for what you are playing first then take them on a journey to another genre…IMO 3 Songs is the min and 5-6 is around what i usually play before switching genres.

You can also find tracks that are great “Bridging” tracks which have elements of 2 genres that are great to quickly switch genres if the one you are currently playing isnt working on the dance floor.

We actually bring in our Mobile Setup to our monthly residency at this small underground venue with a capacity of 140 people every month.

The current setup they have are 4 Pk monitors and 4 18″ bassbins already exist there. We bring in an additional 2 monitors and 2 yamaha subs…and we actually promote the night as such. “Bass In YO FACE!” “Shake the house” etc.

And it goes over really well…our nights are arguably the best nights in this venue…and everyone that works there loves having us do our nights cuz they know they are going to be making good money. This is a true underground club though…and you will see real ravers come here…not the Punters that come to listen to top40 remixes…Im talking full on Kandi kids…furry leg ravers, and crazy hair, and yes a lot of people just wacked out of their mind on drugs.

Its actually one of my favorite nights to play because i can just bang out big heavy ass tracks and people go off the wall…As well i can let songs go into some great breakdowns and i dont get a bunch of punters just standing there going uhhh am i suppose to be doing something right now?

I would have to agree with you 100%.

Although i love the community at DJTT, i would say that they do not really support the stuff that they produce and make people purchase.

This is a bit of a 2 sided story here though. These guys are trying to be hardware guys yet market their hardware with crazy mappings…and well it did work for the most part…a lot of people bought their stuff.

I happen to be one of them with my Midi Fighter Beatmasher. Since the original mapping they created was meant for 2.1.3…it did not really help me at all when it came to later versions and they have no intention of updating their mappings for the new versions of software and leave it up to US to create these mappings.

I think this is a bit of a cash grab where its like hey buy this so you can do all this…but a month from now ur gonna have to figure it out yourself, cuz Traktor has new versions and we dont wanna spend all the time and effort we originally did to get you to buy our product.

Since my original purchase I have HAD to learn traktor mapping in order to be able to take advantage of the new features and get all the bugs out of the mapping, and i cannot be happier.

For myself its almost getting to the point where i will be creating a whole new mapping just for myself and my controller so i can fully utilize all of the functions of the new Traktor Versions.

Yup i have no problems with producing with the HDJ2000s, but my production skill is very low and i mostly just do edits of songs and what not.
