ParticipantGetting Feed back on mixes and what not online is not a true representation of your music.
The best feedback you can get is by seeing people dancing on the dancefloor. A lot of people who review mixes are usually other DJs…and lets face it we are the most picky and willing to point out flaws…You do not Mix for other DJs…you should be mixing for the Dancers. Dont get trapped in the ideology that everything needs to be perfect.
Get out of the bedroom and into the Booth! Hell i have had some nights when i was like omfg i totally fucked that up…but everyone on the dancefloor was still dancing…My phrasing was out to lunch but my beats were matched…so when i could i just loop rolled and echo faded out and off i continued. Now by listening to it from a normal persons ears they were like lalalalalalalala im still dancing here. But to a DJ we would all cringe and be like ohhhhh that sounds horrible.

Participantthis is the stand i use
Its built like a tank is adjustable, and the arms can be lenghten or shortened to fit a wide array of laptops and controllers.

ParticipantTraktor Kontrol comes with Traktor Pro 2…no need to buy them seperately.

ParticipantIMO you should never play the same song twice in a set…its just cheap…as a DJ you should have enough music with you to fill an entire night without having to repeat a track….hell imo you should never play the same set twice.

Now that that is done i can browse through all my smart playlists and create a playlist for a specific night.
As well i have showcase pieces in seperate playlists…this could consisit of up to 5 songs that just go super well together.
Usually i only find these through trial and error of just fucking around with tracks on a regular basis.I dont use Smart playlists to DJ with specifically…the Smart Playlists help organize all my tracks based on genre and feel and from that I create my own Playlists that i will playout with.

ParticipantIf you use the Z eq…it will totally cut off the frequencies similar to a DJM800.
All the way to the left is a complete kill of those frequencies.

ParticipantThis would actually be the best place to get into a debate over it imo…forum boards are meant for public discussion and voicing each other opinions.
I am also curious as to which business practices you are refering to. Out of all the different Music organization programs…Itunes is one of the best out there…the only ones that i know of that can even compete would be Media Monkey and possibly beatunes, yet since both of these you have to pay for and Itunes is free…it wins hands down.

Participant^ that sounds like a shit ton of extra work…what do you do with songs that are like 2 different genres? Progressive Electro, Housy Electro etc?
With the grouping option and using smart playlists it will automatically create playlist that meet certian fields. This way all you have to do is just tag them properly and it will be in that playlist.
It would be a total nightmare for me to find a certian song within all those folders lol.
The way i have it set up is
Artist (original artist), Track name, Album is the last person who touched the song aka Lazy Rich remixes, or what not.
Then in the Genre it is what the main genre is….then under my grouping field i have it set to the feel of the songSwing, Funky, Banging, Big Room, Synthy, Jackin, Housy, Ambient, Breaky, Peak Hours blah blah blah u can make a ton of names for the feel of the song
Then with the rating system i rate it for the time of the night..1 being the beginning and 5 stars being the end of the night
I use comments to tag all my Camelot wheel
I then use the smart playlists and set rules to be like Genre: Electro House, Grouping: Banging,
so that smart playlist will always be up to date for all songs that i tag as electro and with the grouping Banging
Now that that is done i can browse through all my smart playlists and create a playlist for a specific night.

ParticipantProgressive House has a lot of synths and such to it so it is best to do harmonic mixing if you are wanting to do long periods where 2 songs are being mixed together.
As well it is usually best to knock the bass out of the first track and have your mids and highs around 9-10 oclock so the highs and mids do not clash.
Depending on how you want to spin…I find progressive house has way too long of a build…usually 128beats (32×4) and this can kill the vibe if you are on the dance floor.
I usually start my 2nd track right when the build of the 1st track is going or use a loop point on my 2nd track so i always have a kick and snare going…the kick and snare will allow people to still have a rhythm and dance to while the build is well building lol.

This is why i continually tell Djs to buy the proper headphones for the proper job. Headphones like the Beats, and a lot of other headphones extend the bass end and can really screw with your mixes
@ Shuga,
A lot of the time when i have songs that are not the same level it is normal for my 2nd track to have all the EQs at like 2 or even 3 oclock to match levels, as long as you are not hitting the red on your track you should be fine.
A few things to remember with Traktor is to NOT use the Autogain…the autogain feature i find isnt very good…and if you are buying all your tracks most of them should be within the same level.
Have you updated to the new Traktor 2.6? Try using the Z eq settings that have full cutoff of frequencys.

ParticipantThat seems kinda weird that you never eq or filter when you are planning your set.
Question do you use quantize when you play? How long does it take for you to get your songs in phrase? How do you do track preperation?
A few things that i find that will totally increase your speed and let you be more creative by using EQ and Filter and effects are:
Set your cue points. Myself i am not a big sampler or remixer so i use 4 track decks…this is to not say that i dont use samples…but i will just use bits and pieces of other songs as samples.
Have 8 cue points set up you can go within the Kontrol S4 manager and have your sample slots changed to cue points.
Now with your 8 cue points…what i have done is set it pretty much every 32 beats…intro, 2nd intro, first build, first drop, 2nd build, 2nd drop. The last 2 cue points i will either have set to an outtro, or i will find a place within the track that i really like.
When it comes to mixing my general rule is to get my beats matched up usually takes only a couple of seconds…then i turn all my EQ to about 9 oclock…this way i can pretty much bring in my next track at anypoint and you cannot really hear the track at all.
Then on proper count usually the end of a 32 i will start bringing in my mids or my highs depending…then at the right moment i will swap basslines and slowly start eqing out the highs and mids of the first track.
all different genres you have to eq differently as there is more pronounced parts of songs depending on the genre..ie drum and bass is the high hat, progressive and trance is usually the mids where the synth line is…Electro is all over the place…and most forms of real house (jacking/Soulful/Deep/Tech) there is a lot of emphasis on the basslines.

ParticipantI use a cloud backup service as well to store all my music….however when it comes to gigging…i always have a secondary laptop with me along with CDs and my ipod with a pre-recorded mix that i have done.
This way i am always prepared no matter what happens…laptop fails plug in ipod/CD to let me boot up my other laptop or do a restart if that is the big issue.

Participantanyone having this issue with 2.6?
When i set up a macro to change all 3 effects on lets say fx unit 1…i sometimes get a small audio drop out.
I didnt really notice it until last night when i was really going off with effects…and yes it sounded horrible (hint hint to all you fx junkies)
I think i need to increase my sample rate but i was just curious if anyone else was experiencing this.
Currently im only using 128bits probably gonna have to make the jump to 192 or 256. BOOO im gonna have to lose my 6ms response.

ParticipantTraktor 2.6, Alienware m15x, Core i7 First gen 920 Extreme, 8 gigs ram, 7200 rpm HD 500gigs, Win7 Stripped down
Macbook Pro 2011, core i5 i think, with 6 gigs ram…hardly ever use this laptop mostly for production only.

ParticipantPretty much sums up exactly what i do 😀
well except the last part of storing everything on a external hard drive…another risky thing that doesnt REALLY need to be done.
