This is coming from a Traktor Perspective
4 Deck mixing in any scenario is really risky IMO. The more decks the bigger chance things go wrong (songs trainwrecking, over lapping of same color sounds etc.). I spin 100% EDM from Dubstep, house, electro, prog, breaks. I do create a lot of mashups using all 4 decks BUT i make my mashups pre-gig record them. then just stick with the 2 deck format. I do however use my sample decks for adding in extra percussions, little vocals riffs basslines, or even 1 shots for transitions.

When it comes to gig time…its all about K.I.S.S.

From what i know of VDJ the Samples work a lot like effects where you trigger them as oppose to full fledge sample decks. I remember reading somewhere that VDJ will be introducing actual sample decks in their latest version.

At the end of the day it doesnt matter if you make mashups on the fly or prerecord your own mashups…the crowd doesnt care what you are doing as long as it sounds good.

If you are using Traktor…take a look at the Kontrol X1. fairly cheap and with proper mapping you can make the X1 do EVERY thing you need. When my S4 cant fit into a booth i just use 2 X1s and a midi fighter to control everything

All depends on what software you are using what style of music are you mixing, and how you mix.
    FX heavy/Beat juggling/Cue jumping/Mashups etc.

There are a million controllers out there and all of them are decent but are suited to different needs

oh i just wanted to add.

the MC6K and MC3K are both built like tanks…seriously i think you could bash someones head in with it and not even dent the dang controller…Thats my other gripe about the S4 I would have gladly paid an extra 100-150 bucks for a solid metal construction

    IMO the S4 > MC6k
    But the MC3k > the S2
This is coming from a Traktor point of view.

The S4 has hands down the best integration with Traktor. Has the ability to expand with Turntables or CDJ’s using timecode and the layout is a lot more spacious. Some people find the Mc6k cramped but others have gotten used to it. If you are new to controllers the more room you have the less chance of hitting the wrong thing or bumping a fader/knob while you are trying to hit a button. The main gripe people have with the S4 is that there is no Booth out. This can easily be fixed with a independant volume controller for around 35 bucks plugged into the RCA out. As well the S4 already comes with Traktor Pro 2. the Mc6k does not. The one thing i love about the Mc6k is that it is also a dedicated stand alone mixer. If your laptop dies on you you can have CDJs plugged directly into the MC6k and you are still able to do you set off CDJs/Turntables.

    S2 Vs MC3k

The S2 does have booth out but does not have any additional Input in. Meaning if your laptop crashes…you are pretty much screwed. Now this can be a deal breaker if you soley rely on the S2. The S2 is a completely stripped down version of the S4 so all of the nice features you get on the S4 are lacking here.

Now the MC3k on the other hand is also a 2 channel mixer BUT it does have inputs so you can connect CDJS to it. The Mc3k is a hybrid standalone mixer as well so once again if your lappy dies you are still able to get music out until your laptop reboots. There is a lot more space on the MC3K so its not as cramped feeling. I personally like the layout of the Mc3k over the S2.

Well if you are playing in a booth with your DJ crew make sure you have a ton of room. the T1/S1 both are freaking HUGE!
I think Pioneer slipped on their design a bit. The controller does have a CDJ feel but really look at the size of the dang thing…its is the same size as 2 cdjs and a mixer but as 1 piece. Now with 2 CDJs and a mixer costs more money but you have the option of putting your CDJs on a rack if you have a small booth and have to play with others. With the T1 you dont really have that option because it is so dang big.

As well the T1 is a 4 channel mixer, which is becoming more and more industry standard. Even if you do not use the 4 channels as all tracks you have the ability to use the other 2 channels as Sample decks.

If you MUST have that CDJ feel then you are pretty much stuck with the T1. BUT for the same amount of money you can get an S4 that has full integration and has a smaller footprint compared to the T1

It all depends on the enviroment you are going to be DJ’ing in. If you are strickly a bedroom/house party DJ then the Ergo would be okay. The most common found complaints fo the ERGO are: Plastic knobs and faders, and the blinking lights on the Jogwheels.
The T1 is a 4 channel mixer oppose to the ERGO which is a 2 channel mixer.
With a proper mapping the ERGO will do as much as the T1 but it will involve using shift buttons and modifers.
It all comes down to what exactly you are wanting.
My biggest gripe about the pioneer controllers are the tempo faders. I dont like how the left side tempo fader is so close to the volume faders.

I actually use an S4 with a launchpad set in 4 deck MF mode, and spin 99% EDM music running TP2.

You may have forgoten that the point of this thread is for someone trying to find the best controller available for scratching. This is not a controller vs vinyl scratching thread.

Fair enough, as i stated before its all a matter of personal preference and trying them out. What i cannot stand are sales reps giving advice on their products deeming them superior purely from a sales point of view. Its more than obvious that this Hasslehoff is getting paid by denon and is promoting their products. You can see in EVERY post he talks about gear its DENON this and DENON that. I am by no means saying that denon have bad products…i actually own a few of them, BUT trying to convince people to buy denon for just a sale is pretty scummy.

    my 2 cents

??? dude u have ZERO credibility…these are Demo videos PAID BY DENON…seriously…i can bring up thousands of sponsor paid videos showing the most AMAZING talent on any piece of crap hardware. Seriously you have ZERO credibility there are tons of GREAT NI sponsored videos showing people scratching on a S4…does that mean its an amazing controller for scratching? NO.

Its retards like you that give people the idea that OMG if i buy this i can scratch like this guy. NO that is not it. the DMC champ has probably been scratching for YEARS AND YEARs on VINYL, and i can more than guarentee you that he does not use a midi controller as his normal setup.

So please do us all a favor and stop promoting Denon products on a open forum meant for beginner djs that want SOUND advice…not a marketing ploy by some shmuck.

    K thnx

Current S4 owner and i have gotten to play around with it and from what i see the S4 Beats the MC6000 but the MC3000 beats the S2.

S4 supports timecode…nice easy layout and Fully integrated for TP2

The MC6000 is a great unit and with the ability to be a standalone mixer is GREAT. As well the MC6000 has boothout…but in most situations u can usually use the boothout on the house Mixer.

Now the flaws. the MC6000 is super cramped, and i mean super cramped. This was a deal breaker for me as i have a pretty fast paced work flow and the chance of accidently hitting the wrong thing increases 10 fold.
The unit doesnt have 1:1 hardware to software
Doesnt support timecode for people who want to scratch.
Have to use shift modifers to access some of the abilities in Traktor

S4 flaws: Modding the built in mapping is a bit painful…so there is a limited amount you can customize unless you enter midi mode and then you have to remap everything, thankfully the mapping provided works flawlessly
Some people have had problems with sound dropping on PCs but that can easily be fixed with optimization
Plastic construction on top…while very durable…doesnt match then Tank like construction of the MC6000

Now going towards a 2 channel mixer the MC3000 is hands down better than the S2 Phil has some good reviews as to why
