What im trying to say is that…you should not be doing any kind of gigs without a controller, unless its like a house party or something. You will not be able to get the level of control you need just doing stuff off a laptop keyboard and mouse.

You will NEEED to get a basic controller the Mixtrack is great for beginners and only costs 150 since you are gonig to be using a splitter you will not need to get the one with a soundcard in it.

Using just the laptop you will be extremely frustrated trying to get beats to match while EQing and using faders with just your mouse and keyboard.

Practicing on your laptop will not get you anywhere when you make the switch to a controller, because you will need to learn what all the knobs and buttons and stuff do and so pretty much you will be starting all over again.

Im probably gonna get flack for this but its plain and simple:

VDJ imo has targeted the commercial market…

The software alone is more community based than professional based. ITs nice that you can have a bazzillion effects…where 99% of them are horride and unuseable (reminds me of the old pio mixers) have 99 decks…which only 4 at MAX ever get used…and that people can create GUIs and effects.

Serato and Traktor are made to target the professional market…The list goes on as to how many DJs use Traktor and Serato…

I actually got to watch John Aquaviva the other weekend and was pretty surprised that he uses Traktor!!!(if you dont know who he is…he is one of the founders of Beatport and a GOD among the House scene)

VDJ is like a mixture of Serato and Traktor…but just doesnt work as good as either program.

IMO you will not be able to play out anywhere with a Splitter cable option. The sound quality on the majority of laptops is utter garbage and the latency on average is over 20ms.

If you are really wanting to get into DJing save up a bit of scratch around 300 bucks and you can get a decent setup that you can go and gig at house parties and such with…If you end up not liking it you should be able to sell off on kijiji or craigslist for almost the same value that you bought it for.

In this situtation any headphones will do…

what is this going to be used for? You need to provide more information if you want us to help.

What software are you going to be running? Traktor does not allow multiple soundcards to be used at once without doing some crazy ass internal routing…VDJ will allow it but its a pain in the butt. Honestly for the headaches you are going to get…it is better to just spend 100 bucks on a proper DJing audio card.

Hessler is right about most things regarding the difference between the S2 and the MC3k.

I know i may get some flack for this but…in all honesty the 2 pieces of software that are used in a professional enviroment is Traktor and Serato, with that said neither controller can be used with Serato. and for the price point…unless you plan on taking your controller to war often (club setting) then the S2 will be fine for you. I gig with my S4 on a regular basis and have never had any issues with it getting damaged or what not. My biggest fear in a club setting is getting drinks spilled on it…and neither controller is waterproof.

As well with the MC3k you will ahve to buy a seperate copy of Traktor Pro 2….the S2 already comes with it

I do not keep snap and quantize on during my sets and only use it when i am doing cue point juggling to keep everything in sync. I as well do not use the sync button at all unless i am wanting to drop a track right on point rather than slowly bringing it in…so my sync button is set to sync on hold and does not sync when i release the button.

I am a firmly against using Sync during my sets but it is nice to have for those situtations when you get distracted or some ninny is trying to talk to me while i am playing my set.

IMO it doesnt matter what you do…nothing beats a good set of ears

I am mistaken the stantons do work with Traktor Full Thread can be found here

Regardless what you use you are gonna need a controller to control the mixer section of Traktor.

As well from what i understand to use the platters in traktor you are going to need timecode.

For EDM music…Traktor is hands down the best software. It doesnt matter what anyone else tells you Traktor Pro 2 is THE BEST. For around 450 you can buy a Kontrol S2 which includes the full version of Traktor Pro 2.

Best setup imo for EDM DJs…unless you can afford the Kontrol S4

The biggest gripe i have with the S4 is how freakin big it is. Finding space in a booth to fit it is a bit of a pain in the ass.

I will say that not having a dedicated filter knob was a deal breaker for me. As well the fact that the filter knob on the S2 is clickly and not smooth is a bit of a breaker. I use my filter knob like crazy.

Okay first off i think you need to do some more research. Traktor does not support motorized platters at all so the SCS.1Ds or the V7 will not work with traktor. (they will work as midi but will not recognize the motorized platters)

The NS6 already has a sound card and is a dedicated mixer as well so you will not need to invest in another soundcard.
Motorized platters on midi controllers is imo is a bit ass backwards…if you want the feel of vinyl then get turntables and use a DVS system ie. SSL or Traktor Scratch.

So with that said you have 2 options depending on what you like to spin: Serato (Hiphop/Other styles of music) Traktor (all forms of EDM)

OR just buy a copy of Traktor Pro 2 and get a mapping for the NS6. (free 30 day trial of TP2 on the Native instruments website)
Since you are a beginning DJ i really dont see why you would want motorized platters…99% of EDM DJs use CDJs, Vinyl is mostly reserved for Turntablists now a days.

If you are wanting to expand your playablity I suggest getting some CDJs and hooking them up to your ns6 and learn to spin without a laptop.

Until you have become pretty well known its not worth setting up a website. Using sites like Facebook fan pages…myspace and Twitter will be more than enough. Instead of investing in websites get business cards with all your information.

Mix Cloud is a great site to post your mixes as its free and doesnt have a cap.

First question….why are you trying to record externally? The built in recorder within Traktor is amazing! wicked sound quaility and really easy to use.

USe mixed in Key as a reference DO NOT RELY on it!! I have seen some DJs use this and just train wreck because they “think” it is in key when it is really not. MIXED in KEY is only about 50% accurate!

Best way to learn how to DJ:

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, and record EVERYTHING you practice and listen to it. Find where you make mistakes and how to improve on them.

Youtube Videos, and other sites will show you a wealth of information.

the BEST suggestion i have for you is go and watch DJ’s in the nightclub…Find a good spot you can watch the DJ (2nd floor if the club has one that is overlooking the DJ booth, or even behind the DJ at some distance so he doesnt see you creepin on him lol.

Listening to mixes and sets are a good wealth of information but mixes NEVER show you the ambiance and the mood of the room. By going to the club you get a feel for the mood, the setting and the DJs music and how he uses it to get the crowd moving.

Open up your settings in Traktor pro.

Goto the mixer tab and click the box to show crossfader. exit settings, now on the bottom of your decks where the crossfader is on the right hand side there should be 3 knobs…1 for mix, 1 for volume and 1 for mic. The Cue volume here is independant of the cue volume on your board. Turn the cue volume up to max and then control the levels with the knob on your board.
