ParticipantIT depends on the CDJ, im going to talk about Pioneer CDJs as they are the usual Club Standard.
The CDJ 350, 850, 900, and 2000s (am i missing other CDJs models that have fashdrives?) all have USB flash drives…so you can use them as a your song collection…only the 900 and the 2000s have direct link…which is a cat5 cable (internet cable) that can link between the CDJs and even your mixer if your mixer has direct link…and then yes you can access all your music off 1 memory stick.

ParticipantYou can do transitions when ever the heck u want but, it usually a rule of thumb that u do a transition on the 1st beat of a 32…or 64…or 16 sometimes works but usually it is too quick.
Now i dont know my proper terminolgy since…but 1234 is considered a bar i think…and 1234 2234 3234 4234 is considered a Phrase…Most EDM songs are set in 32 bars…or 2 phrases…then it transitions. within its own song…This is the perfect place to do your own transition, at the first beat of a 32 is when you want to swap basslines or highs or whatever depending on the genre of music you play…

ParticipantWell i guess ill input my 2 cents here regarding finding new music.
As the EDM scene is blowing up there is a stupid amount of garbage EDM thats out there.
My tips for finding new music:
1 – First off you need to have a few artists that you like a lot. Go onto beatport and find which label they are under and look up artists under the same label. Usually Each label has producers that have the same style of music under it.
2 – Once you have those artists that you like…look up who does remixes of their songs…usually the remixer sometimes not as often as #1 will have music in the same genre.
3 – http://www.last.fm is a great site for finding new artists…best thing to do is type in an artist and there will be a page that shows artists that are Highly similar to not very similar to the artist you are viewing.
4 – Blog Sites…there are tons of great blog sites that always post new music. http://www.mymusicisbetterthanyours.com is one that i use very often and always has good music, in a variety of Genres.
5 – Expand your musical Horizions! Start listening to people that you may not necessarily like…sometimes not very often they will produce a song thats just BANGING in the genre that you like. A great example of this is Hirshee…Hirshee used to be a lot of Dubstep and Drumstep but has been producing BANGING electro Tracks.
6 – Soundcloud, Add all your favorite producers…there are often a ton of bootlegs and re-rubs that are release for free on soundcloud for download and often not a lot of these are ever played out in a club.

ParticipantThe whole CDJ vs Controller vs Tables is soooooo over that its not funny….
The REAL question you should be asking is who is better me or you?
And the answer is ME!
At the end of the day even coming from a perspective of a DJ…mind you i am a lot more open minded than most is…
I dont care if u are using 2 cassette players…2 8tracks…or a washboard and a wooden spoon…If you are rocking the crowd thats all that matters…Screw the Haters and appreciate the people who appreciate you.
with that said
/Thread close
Can we talk about something thats productive now?

ParticipantWith the style of music i play i often have what my crew calls “showcase” 4 or 5 songs that go so banging togeather and are able to create that next level of energy. This is also very dependant on the style of music that you spin…HipHop or should i say NON-EDM genres you dont really need to plan ur sets as at most you are only blending around 32 beats if that before you transition into your next song. Most of the time its a slam or a scratch or a loop and u are off into your next track.
With my style of DJing i will often have 2 songs mixing togeather for upwards of 2 minutes of the song…throwing in loops and effects as i please…This you cannot do on the fly, well you can but you need to know your tracks inside and out and upside down. Between Showcases i will pick a song or two that i think fit then move onto my next showcase.
If you are doing Basic Intro to Outro mixing there really is no need to plan your sets as the likelyhood of songs clashing is at a minimal.
Me personally I think with todays day and age DJing is more about creating a unique sound out of what is already been made. Really anyone can pick the top 100 songs on a list and go play then out…But it takes skill to be able to create something new out of something that already is.

Participantuhhh im confused…whats the difference between planning and practicing your set?
Planning is practicing for the actual show is it not?

Participant…I have over 120 gigs of music over the years and years i have been either DJing or just my private collection…i dont understand how this is relating to DJing…as i probably only keep about 100-150 songs in my main crate of tracks I play out.
I mean really…if you were to play an entire night @ a club…which hardly ever happens these days thats like what 5 hours of playing…at roughly 2 minutes a track thats like what 150 songs max? and 2 minutes if pretty short…

ParticipantI have found the new Music ID App is better than Soundhound or Shazam.
If im at the club and im not DJing i am always usually on the dancefloor and will ask the DJ what the heck the song is cuz its so banging…most of the times they will tell me.
I never hear stuff that i like on the radio so that is not a problem
For Mixes and whatnot if the track list isnt available ill google it and i can usually find out what the track is.

ParticipantWhy the Hell would you ever use Studio Monitors for gigs even house parties is such a freaking waste!
Studio monitors are not meant to be played loud…they are meant for clarity, Rocking expensive monitors at a house party is a good way to kill the life of your monitors right quick. The store price up here for the KRK RP8s is around 280 bucks Each brand new.
For that price you can pick up some low end Active Beringher or Mackie PA monitors for roughly the same price, the difference being the Mackies or Behringers will last for many parties while the Studio Monitors will die out rather quickly.
Is the sound quality as good in the Active PA no…it doesnt really compare…but if you are throwing a house party no one cares how clean or perfect the sound is.
Save the Studio monitors for the Studio and get some PA speakers for House parties

ParticipantYeah I have an X1 with my S4 and a midifighter pro Beatmasher…and i know what u mean about finding space in a booth…its a PITA…I always bring 1″ foam with me so i can lay it over the Turntables or CDJs. As I tried gigging with an X1 and was totally not happy with it at all. I love having the platters and all the functions right on my S4 instead of having to go into a different mode or shift modifiers to do everything on an X1. When theres a will theres a way to make shit work with ur S4

ParticipantThe Only Difference between the Mixtrack and the Mixtrack pro is that the Pro has a built in Soundcard
I Started off on the Mixtrack and loved it alot but i outgrew it very quickly…the good thing is that the resale value on these does not really drop so at most you will lose 50 bucks off what the retail price is.
Well that was my case

ParticipantHee Won Jung, post: 18388, member: 948 wrote: You can pickup the Mixtrack not pro edition for cheaper but then you will need to spend additional money on a 2ch DJ soundcard. This is a viable option if you do not have all the cash up front at the moment. I believe the mixtrack goes for around 150 bucks…and with the release of the new Traktor packages you will be able to pick up a Traktor Audio 2 for around 119 and that will come with a full version of Traktor pro 2 software.
The only problem this creates is that you will now be using 2 USB ports on your laptop. 1 for the Mixtrack and another one for the Traktor Audio 2.
IMO with the new way Traktor is doing its thing is better to buy the Mixtrack not the PRO and a Traktor Audio 2 card and you get a full version of Traktor which is around 90 bucks with the new pricing if i am correct.
So really Mixtrack pro- around 300 + 90 for Traktor
OR
Mixtrack – 150
Traktor audio 2 -119Still cheaper than buying the Mixtrack pro.
This will be effective as of May 30th I believe
