Podcasts, Soundcloud, and DI are my main sources for Mixes, but i am mostly exclusively underground EDM.

I think trying to be Upfront and have all the latest tracks is a little bit of a waste of time…this is my thinking here:

EVERYONE! will have those tracks…and EVERYONE will want to play them out…Really go and look on the Beatport top 100 and there is a reason why “MOST” of those tracks are on there…its cuz they rock…are made by a high level producer…and for the most part deserve to be there due to high production value.

But everyone and their bastard child has those songs…theres no point in keeping all ur stuff right up to date.

I find its more about finding songs that are right for YOU…does that mean you might have a few tracks that are in the top100 heck ya! BUT! its more about finding those secret little gems that no one knows about…that arnt on the charts that are hidden in obsecurity, and you just randomly stumble across and are like WOW WTF!! THIS IS AMAZEBALLZ!! I GOTTA HAVE THIS TRACK!!
Its songs like that which has worked for me and will probably work for you that seperate you from all the other top100 beatport DJs.

This is the response 99% of ppl who started on VDJ and move on to Traktor say…I am in the same boat…Serato for me feels too much like mixing on CDJs/TT with wave forms and a bigger screen, while VDJ just seems too toyish for me…I dont know what it is about VDJ but as soon as i jumped to Traktor i was like WTF was i doing on this garbage software…(this is just my opinion and VDJ users i know you guys can do just as much if not more in VDJ as you can in Traktor)

I would most definately address this as you do not want this happeneing in a real Gig.

Grab another USB cable and see if it does the same thing…start trouble shooting as to why this is happenening.

From the little info i have…it seems like the connection isnt tight. If it does the same thing with all USB cables id send it in to get it looked at.

Im guessing u would be using Traktor.

Plug both in Open Traktor goto Controller Manager and add controller.

    This has some different answers.

    Here is my view:

Most Amps these days take XLR…You can buy 1/4″(TRS) To XLR cables from most music places and this imo is THE best way to connect. or TRS to TRS if available. TRS and XLR will have the best sound qualitiy to them.

You CAN go Rca to Rca but i dont really reccomend it. Any RCA cord will have sound degredation after 6′, and even more so at 12′.

Now this sound loss you may not really recognize on your home system or on a small PA system, but I can totally hear the difference when i do BIG shows, and thus refuse to use the RCA for anything else other than plugging into the house mixer.

I freakin love Digital DJing over traditional…aaaannndd here is why: (coming from Traktor, with Kontrol S4, Midi fighter Pro Beatmasher).

Quantize, 8 Cue points, Harmonic Mixing using Mixed in Key, Keylock with Keyknob(will explain), Portability, Effects, Midi Mapping

Quantizing: This is GREAT for my style of DJing…I have not really gotten into the sample decks yet so i use a 4 deck setup while im mixing…i dont always use 4 decks but i have it setup this way so that i can when i want to. All my tracks i have cue points set to the beginning of a 32 bar. I can mix mash chop and jump around to different points of the song…staying right in time with the track and on beat.

8 Cue points : I touched on this above…but really it makes it so i can make my own remixes, my own mashups…my own sound…out of 1 song…as well i am able to bring a new song in at any one of my cue points and have it sound good. All my cue points are set at the 1 beat so as long as i am counting my first track i will always be spot on when i bring my 2nd track in.

Harmonic Mixing: This isnt traktor specific…but it does create a whole new dimension to DJing…its amazing how many ppl bitch about SYNC…really like come on now…it takes a decent DJ what 5 seconds to beat match…so the sync button helps you what save 4 seconds? While i find Harmonic mixing is more of a game changer…Good DJs know this already because they have a good ear…but it takes time to find those perfect songs that create that awesome mashup…with Mixed in key…it takes you way less time to find those perfect songs that go well together.

Keylock : great for staying harmoniclly in tune with ur tracks even with a greater tempo shift +-10bpm
Keyknob: This is my own little tool i mapped to my Midifighter pro knob…same as the filter where one way will change the pitch higher and the other lower…this is great for creating my own little 4 bar loop and slowly raising the pitch but still in time to create my own little drops out of nothing while transitioning into the next song.

Effects : I dont always use effects…but when i do…its tastefully done…and not chopping the crap out of a song and sounding like shit. Traktor effects sound freaking awesome. ( Less is more)

Now I’m a little confused. Since most EDM tracks are about 6-9 minutes, that’s a pretty substantial edit

I’ve noticed EDM intros have gotten much longer since the nineties. 16/32 bar intros were the norm but now 64 seems standard. The buildups are also much longer. I’m even setting my first real musical cue point 2-3 minutes into the song now and then. Maybe the lazier DJ’s are following this trend?

It is actually very genre specific these days.

Trance/Progressive usually have very long intro outtros and are on average of 7 minutes long

Electro/Fidget/Breaks are usually around 5:30 mark…with the intro being 1 minute and the outtro being 1 minute.
A lot of the main stream commercial music follows the same pattern.
You will notice a lot of radio edits are 3:30 long…which is pretty much the whole song except the intro and outtro

House(eurohouse not club house)/Deephouse/Techhouse have the similar pattern but vary in song lenth…5:30-9minutes

I don’t like to let tracks go on to the point that the crowd gets bored, however, I tend to let newer songs that I like and want to be heard run a little longer than usual.

    Exactly this!!!

If I have a song that i think is just totally Banging…or its a brand new track that got released a week ago i do let it play out…but usually only from the first buildup to the beginning of the Outro then start mixing new stuff in.

I am going to speak out against effects here…and heres why.

When i first went from CDJs/Mixer to my S4 the use of effects was waaay easier and way better than on my pio mixer.

HOWEVER…i found myself using too much effects and this made my overall mixes suffer.
I think that doing proper mixing and nailing your transitions, proper EQing and fader play you can create just as much diversity in your mixes.
AFTER you have mastered proper EQ/Mixing/Transitions then i think its acceptable to add another layer of aptmosphere and use effects properly.
I see too many up and coming DJs using effects, yet their songs are clashing..highs on highs…not in harmony, and the odd case not even in phrase. And they think they sound good…when in reality, they are not what so ever.

The Ergo isnt even in the same class as the S2 in my opinion…the jogwheels and feel of the ERGO is more like a CDJ200…its cheap feeling…all the knobs and buttons are plastic…and has those damn annoying ass lights.

The ERGO is meant as a consumer product.

The S2 and the MC3000 are more professional products…I know i might get flamed for this

IF i were to choose between the S2 and the MC3k i would have to go with the MC3k purely on the construction factor…You could probably kill someone with the MC3k and still be banging out a good beat…S2 not so much.

The Only real advantage the S2 has over the MC3000 is the Tighter integration with Traktor and also the S2 comes with a full copy of Traktor Pro 2.

Im pretty sure the MC3k also has a hybrid standalone mixer mode which is a big bonus.

My friend uses nothing but CDJs…he came over last night to try and record since i have the s4 setup with traktor and can record very easy using that.

It took him less than 10 mins to figure out my S4…The hardest thing for him was learning what all the additional buttons do.

The Jog wheel and pitch fader he had no problems with and was able to beatmatch very quickly.

The larger the jog wheel has nothing to do with how accurate your inital drop is for beatmatching.

If you are used to the CDJ style u only use the jog wheel to line up ur beats…CDJ is more cue cue cue play…as oppose to vinyl where you have to hold ur record and let go on beat.

Yeah I can see where you guys are coming from.

But the whole switching genres thing i can see how what i am saying does not apply. I am speaking from strickly an EDM perspective, where tempo changes and genre changes are minimal…and even if you are switching genres you are still relatively in the same tempo.

Now one thing i wanted to point out is that when im talking, is not chopping the song right out every 128 bars (1.5-2 minutes)

Im talking about adding things in..weather it be a simple drum beat of the next song…or adding harmonic synths and melodies…im always adding and taking something away rather than just letting the song play out as is.

I actually had a jam session with a buddy of mine last night that does a lot of prog house…and he is freakin awesome…being able to blend 3 tracks seemlessly and on beat, in phrase and with effective EQing to keep the flow going but also keep the music interesting.

I guess the biggest gripe i have is what i said in my previous post…where today it seems it more about the each individual song, than back in the 90s when it was all about the mix.

Yeah i have found nothing beats Traktor for Keylock.

I have done HUGE pitch adjustments +20% and it still sounds great, mind you I only play Wavs…so i think that also has something to do with it….I tossed on a 128bit song and did the same thing and holy crap it sounded like total Garbage

Sounds good I will post some Mixes within the next 2 days.

Is there any specific Genre that you guys are looking for?

My main genre is Electro, but i do, do Electro, Breaks, Complextro, Fidget, Tech-House, House, Disco/Funky House, Nu-Disco, Indie Dance, Dubstep, Drumstep, and…if i get paid enough…top40 remixes lol (not saying u are paying me)
