Participantplease be more specific? What exactly do you mean by mixing out?…like ending a mix?
or like mixing a new song into the next song?Hee Won Jung
Participantyeah…it really is a shame…i wish the scene out there was a lot bigger, i remember in the late 90s how the underground rave scene had erupted…having to goto Skytrain stations to get a phone number to find an underground rave usually in the docks of an abandoned warehouse…ahhh the good old times

ParticipantMy DJ group and I do things a little differently…We all spin different genres of music and only book gigs that will work with the genre of music we play. With that said…we do plan our sets…but not in the conventional sense. During our practice time we come up with “showcase” pieces which are usually 3-5 songs that really bang out together well..doing extended mixing and live remixing. We then string our showcase’s together with 1 or 2 filler songs to connect the showcases in key.
We all play high energy music within our genre…ie Really bouncing house, or banging electro, or grimey dubstep…it doesnt matter…all songs can have high energy if mixed right with other tracks.
The mentallity that we have is…you can mix any 2 songs together and make it sound banging…just a matter of how you mix and the way you are able to use effects and eq properly to mix the tracks. (Within the same genre of course)

ParticipantFrom a Technical standpoint you should be counting in 4s…since it is a 4 x 4 beat pattern you should go by what is proper.
Realistically…i dont even count anymore and can tell when the end of a 32 beat phrase is.
August 2, 2012 at 4:22 pm in reply to: Difference between Digital Dj'ing and using Timecode with CDJ's? #1009125Hee Won Jung
ParticipantMy own setup is using an S4 with Traktor, but when i play out I play on a varity of different gear. Sometimes i wont have room for my controller so i will use my Audio 8 with Timecode CDJ or tech 12s depending on what they have at the club.
Other times when i have to play with my Crew and we are opening for a headliner…we dont have the option to do equipment changes so i stick with their DVS setup. They all use Serato so i just use my USB stick and plug into their DVS setup.
Others I have no other option other than to just use my USB sticks and CDJ900/2000/850 etc.
My point…its all the same…only difference is knowing how to adjust your music for beat matching, but other than that you are doing exactly the same thing…just a different way of doing it.
With that said i prefer my S4 and Traktor with my Midi fighter…the possiblities are endless, and at this stage in my DJing almost effortless to mix 3-4 tracks at once…genre depending of course. When i first made the switch to a controller, i got a lot of negative comments from people that i knew…but once they saw what i was capable of, it quickly changed their views on controllers.

ParticipantThe scene in Calgary is pretty awesome actually. Vancouver music scene is complete garbage lol…no offense steelo, but i used to live in Van 3 years ago and all my friends live out there….and well the scene sucks…its great if you like top40 hiphop and all the commercial cheesy crap but for the underground scene…its pretty brutal. I have actually been thinking about branching out to Vancouver with my Promo company as it seems there is higher demand for EDM out in Vancouver but that is quite a ways off from becoming a reality.
Calgary has an awesome scene. All the local clubs usually have some great EDM…but like the rest of the world…this City is focusing on big name Producers to get people out to the clubs. A few DJs that have been booked here in the last 2 months are: Lucky Date, Hirshee, Lazy Rich, Organ Donors, Morgan Page, Tiesto is coming in a month or so, Wolfgang Gartner, Porter Robinson, Avicii, Calvin Harris in a month away, Arty, Sander Van Doorn, and this is just in the last 2-3 months!!!
There are also quite a few real REAL underground places down here, and most of them are genre specific…Underground electro, Bass music, and REAL House music…not guetta or SHM or avcii garbage.
There isnt many large venues that support the underground scene but that has been changing slowly over the last year or so.

July 31, 2012 at 3:06 pm in reply to: How important do you think it is for DJs to also be producers nowadays? #1008984Hee Won Jung
ParticipantI think its a matter of what you want out of what you are doing. I have been in the scene since the late 90s and have always loved DJing. Even to this day I love spinning music…I love being able to Bang out the music i love and see the reaction of people on the dance floor. I have tried and tried and tried to produce but i think i am a little to ADHD to be able to sit down and put copious amounts of time into making a track.
On the flip side of things…i have spent 10 hour sessions in ableton and accomplished absolutely NOTHING but loved every minute of it.I would love to become a major producer but its not very high on my list of ToDo’s. Currently i spent most of my off time promoting events and shows, and i am continually using that as my gateway into being able to quit my day job so then i can focus all my time and effort into Producing.

ParticipantThe option is there but for traktor 2.1.3 or lower it doesnt work. I have not tried in 2.5 so they may have fixed it.

You cannot do this within Traktor…only VDJ lets you split a sound source. Go grab a Traktor Audio 2…they are perfect for what you are looking for.

ParticipantWith Hiphop and Urban music harmonic mixing isnt really necessary because it is drum heavy and minimal synths. As well with most Hiphop and Urban music there isnt much mixing involved…by mixing im talking about 2 tracks both going for an extended period of time, there is a lot more scratching and quick cuts from track to track.

ParticipantI suggest going over to the DjTechtools Website and take a look at the EGE VCI-400…IMO the BEST controller on the market right now.
It is really gonig to depend on what Software you want to use, Traktor or Serato Itch, since you are wanting a midi solution from the sound of things

ParticipantYou have 10 minutes to show off what you have as a DJ?
What are the criteria that they will be judging you on? TBH how are you able to show off your skills within 10 minutes?
A “good” DJ is typically based on
:Crowd Control (reading the crowd, taking the crowd where you want with your music)
:Mixing abilites ( EQing, usage of effects, DJ tricks)
:Song Selection (obvious)
:How drunk you can get and still DJ properly (duhh joke)Now this DJ competition you are doing wont be able to really test any of these…cept maybe the last one…So im really curious as to how this is being judged. I mean a turntablism or Controllerist comp i can totally understand…but just a straight DJ comp.
Now on the total Flipside of things…DJ comps imo are a waste of time and the promoters way of making easy money without any actual promoting or effort involved. Unless its a controllerism or Turntablism as i stated above.
I have seen Girl DJs win DJ comps who do extremely basic mixing, but wear a lil sexy outfit and shake around and win…yet they are not good DJs…they can mix…passably…but dont really do anything that well…yet they won. I have also seen some amazing DJs who are mixing 4 tracks at once throwing in 1 shot samples and litterly remixing live…on point on beat in phrase and in key…yet they didnt even place in the top 3. DJing is an Artform…just because you like what they are doing the next person may not…its all personal preference…so how can u judge personal preference?
You dont see people doing live 10 minute Canvas painting competitions….

ParticipantYeah, If there was an Easy way to map the 4 EQs for the xone on my S4 i totally would use it…but since it is 1-1 integration and cant be modifed…I think there is a way so you can use the existing maping and just map the bottom 2 EQs to the low Knob on the S4 but i really havent played around with it.
That Said i use the P600 Eq as i do agree that the classic EQ just doesnt sound right, and is super sensitive…
July 25, 2012 at 3:41 pm in reply to: unfortunate timing for laptop to brick on me, next cheapest option? #1008631Hee Won Jung
ParticipantA quick way of seeing if you actually fried your PSU in your laptop or if there is just a residual charge making it so your laptop wont turn on is:
Unplug the battery from your laptop…press the powerbutton down for 30 seconds to release the trickle charge still left in the bios battery…then plug in your power supply without the battery plugged in. If the Laptop turns on then you have reset the bios batter charge and you should be able to plug the laptop battery back in and it will start recharging. If this doesnt work then it is a serious issue and you will need to get it sent it.
TBH though…any 200 dollar laptop these days will be able to run most DJ software.
I used to use an old Toshiba A660 that i bought on kijiji for 200 bucks. If my screen had not gotten smashed in a gig it would still be my DJing laptop today…but now its just my home media computer that i plug into my TV.
