No probs, were are gathering quite a bit of interest from twitter via people who know madlab, so there is a good chance for another one.

I think your name alone is fine ‘Belinda Dรถtzer’, no need to put DJ in front of it – forgive me for those who do, but it seems like only the cheesiest of DJ’s do so (just my view, not trolling). If you are concerned about mis-spelling Belinda, I’m sure they will learn it soon enough when all your publicity material is out – flyers FB page etc, etc. I mean how else will they learn after all, if you dont use it?

As for Dรถtzer, its german right? Well Germany has been the in place for DJ migration the last 5 years or so – Richie Hawtin, Magda, to name a couple of famous ones and I know of one my DJ friends is moving to Berlin soon. As you might know the Claude von Stroke is a made up name his real name is Barclay Crenshaw, an American, he wanted a european name as he thought he would have more chance to make it, which he did. Same goes for Jaques Lu Cont aka Les Rhythmes Digitales, who is really Stuart Price, a brit, he wanted a french name because that the media were hyping up french acts like Daft Punk and Air at the time he was trying to break it. Well you have a real ‘European’ name – use it to your advantage I reckon ๐Ÿ™‚

For me it was Virtual DJ with the Hercules DJ console thing. The software had cue mix control but the hercules was missing this, so I had no way of previewing the mix will sound and hence no opportunity to adjusting the EQ etc before mixing in the track (I basically had to learn eq’ing on the fly, all knobs turned down, bring the track in and adjust it in). Also the play button was hit and miss.

Had midi-mapping been better in those days I could have got round the issue by remapping the console. Anyway after watching the Hawtin set-up video, it led me to Traktor and a Xone 1D and my own custom mappings – which for me is where some real advantages of digital dj’ing are.

Should I wait a bit or should i just pull the trigger? even though budget is tight these days? coz I plan on getting some studio monitors and some other gear.

How many gigs of tunes on your external HD – could u just transfer those if so how much space left?

I upgraded mine from 160gb to 500gb 7200rpm, the speed increase is significant, but it does give a slight more wurring noise, but nothing major – typing on keyboard is louder. So I say go for it, with only two USB ports having all my tunes on my laptop means i dont have to worry about using a USB hub or carry extra weight.

I still have plenty of space left, but I might in future go for 1TB at 7200 if its available, that way I can ditch the external which I use for movies, TV shows and DJ mixes etc.

    A late 2009 13″ MacBook Pro.

Best Thing: Too many – Long battery life, keyboard is backlit and joy to type on, OS, a good screen I can use all day, portability, it just works and I dont need to meddle with the OS, solid case, too much

Worst thing: Nothing, I’m truly happy with it :)))

Though screen size can be an issue with four decks, its easily overcome as I have the keyboard button mapped so that Traktor goes into browser view (decks minimised) so i can have more space to view tracks and a macro mapping on the controller to load the track into a specific deck and at the same time change the view to what it was before. Also I use 4 virtual desktops with apps to load into specific desktops, one for web browsing and files mangement, 2nd for itunes/spotify, 3rd for Traktor and 4th for Ableton. Then I switch swifty with either dock icons or the alt+arrow buttons. With these workarounds and full view mode it means screen size issue is overcome and I really appreciate the portability of my 13″ – I dont need the 15″.

Some interesting points. Over at DJ Tech Tools they were discussing improvements for the next version, which has been rolled up into this wish list open letter…

    Hi there

You are allowed to use Traktor on two computers at any given time if I remember correctly, so no need to uninstall your PC version, at least until you know your mac version is working. Nor is your PC install portable i.e. you can’t just put it on a hard disk – Mac’s dont run PC software either.

How did you install your PC version, did you have install disks or did you get a download link? If it came on disks, I presume it has the mac version on it too? If so, pop the disks into your mac, install and enter your license key (if you didn’t keep a copy log into the NI site and it can be found using the Registered Products link).

IF you used a download link, then that will be for the PC version only, you need the version for a Mac. This you can get by either contacting NI and be prepared to wait a few days for a reply (up to a week is normal at the moment), who will send you a link for the install file if they are feeling helpful (very unusual for NI ;). Or point you to the demo version page, which is what they did to me two years ago in the same situation as you.

Alternatively you can cut out the waiting and use the link below which they sent me:

    http://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/other-pages/demo-versions/

I think back then you could just download the software but now you have to fill out the details on the small form and a link will be emailed to you in goodness of time. Install from that link and then just enter your licence key and it should work ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi

If you encounter too many problems with getting PRS/Label clearance for your tunes, it might be worth hosting your podcasts on something like Mixcloud, who deal with all that malarkey for you. The only downside is that the mix can only be streamed, not downloaded like usuale podcasts. However, the mix is easily embedded onto websites and and facebook pages so meets the need for marketing etc. I rarely download mixes now as my hard drive would be too full, I just favourite and on with the next – Ive got more than I have time to listen to and assume the same for those listening to mine.

On the second note of making a podcast I would recommend starting with the free Audacity and a cheap headset. Just import your mix into it and record a voice over into a separate track, you can also slit your mixes up for pauses and use another track for jingles etc. cheap but effective.

I don’t know of anyone personally who has, but I’m sure people have – have you watched that film It’s All Gone Pete Tong? A poignant film about this very topic.

Computer programming skills. Using the traktor controller thing to do my own midi mappings!
Using metadata and smart playlists to sort my music library out.
