My last visit to this site was nearly a year ago and in that time the forum still sucks. <ranting/bad language removed>

http://tinypic.com/r/33lf8ck/8

The old site was 10 times better. Although some complained they couldn’t register the majority of users had no problems with the old site. This new forum has removed all functionity of the old site and introduced new problems thus rendering the site useless.

Why re-invent the wheel? Why not use vbulletin like all other forums? End this experiement and either ensure the forum works as intended or end ths disaster.

The new site sucks, from the design to functionality. I can’t even copy and paste to post my mix, the editor erases my text then marks as spam.

The old forum was better;I never experienced any problems using that site. You guys seem to follow the Yahoo philosophy..”if it works, break it”.

No tracklist,no genre, no listeners.

If you want people to listen to your mix put some effort in posting your mix.

Without either a genre or tracklist many will not listen to your mix.

There was a misstep in 3rd transition, you missed the breakdown by a few snares but overall I can’t say this mix was great, just good,no obviously major problems.

The only problem I see is the tracklist. There’s not much diversity,it features nothing but radio hits. You should dig deeper for little known tracks – anybody can play radio hits. A deejay who plays radio hits is like magician who performs the same tricks other magicians use. What separates you from other Deejays are:

1) track selection
2) skills

You seem to have basic beatmatching down now it’s time to dig for your music or else you’ll be nothing more than a mediocre deejay playing the same tunes in the exact same way as other deejays.

I stopped listening after 1:18 that flanger effect really irritated me. That may a desirable effect within EDM but not Disco. It totally ruins the groove of the song.

A tracklist or genre listed would be helpful.

I’m not wrong wedding djs don’t even mix most of the time they just fade songs out. do you actually think you could develop the skill of someone like Z trip or Jazzy Jeff or Q bert being wedding dj? Of course not wedding dj’s are mostly hasbeens, people who used have great skill, quit deejaying for a few years comes back and plays simple songs for simple people to make extra money. Or they are never beens, people who never put in the time and practice in order to develop great skill so they’re stuck playing simple songs with very little skill mixing songs for simple people.

it’s very simple formula there songs that everybody dances to such as:
Commodores – Brick House
Michael Jackson – Billie Jean
,etc

Then there are songs that most of the people dance to such as:
Berlin – Metro
Freestyle – Don’t Stop The Rock
etc

Start the first two songs of your set with songs Everybody dances to then your 3rd song will something most people dance to then repeat. Two songs everybody dance to one song most people dance to. It’s not magic it’s simple time tested formula every good set follows this. The only problem comes when those who have not trained to ears to know what songs everybody dances vs songs most people dance to.

My next gig is in 2 weeks,

How do you go about getting people outside of your cirlce to come to your events?

I think you need to stop thinking in such locals terms I don’t where you at but here in southern California events (even local club events) are promoted within a 60 to 100 miles radius. Putting up a few flyers by the venue isn’t going cut it to make money. You need get the word out to as many people as possible and a reason why someone would go to your event as opposed to another’s.

Ask yourslef two questions.
Why should anybody come to my event?
Who is type of person who would come my event?

Once you know the answer to those two questions you know what to use to bring people in (ladies free before 10,drink specials, etc) and where to promote your event (near universities, blogs, facebook groups, etc).

If you really want to learn proper sequencing and song order, be a wedding DJ. Seriously. 45-90 minute sets in a ‘cool’ nightclub are not the way to learn the elusive art of song selection. You need a place where you can spin for several hours non-stop. And if you have to win over a crowd that doesn’t share your tastes in music, so much the better. A top 40 club or pub would also do. Even if the crowd are a bunch of sheep, learning to how to steer your flock is a good skill to have.

That’s worse advice ever! wedding djs are the bottom of barrel of the deejay world. They’re nothing but human jukeboxes playing middle of the road songs for middle of the road people. A newbie will never progress to be great solid deejay being a wedding dj. A wedding dj is where never-beens and has-beens go when they fall off. It won’t teach anything about song selection because 99% of the music you play is top 40 hits from 70’s,80’s and 90’s. It won’t teach how put together a solid mix of Hip Hop or latin grooves. It won’t teach you to dig for music. It won’t teach to be creative and experiment mixing songs you initially thought would not work together. Playing song to make 60 year old aunt betty dance won’t teach you about song selection because aunt betty has piss poor taste in music and is stuck in the past.

to answer the OP question all songs can be mentally catagorized. Some songs you know people will dance to they 10,9. some songs some, most of the people dance to they 8,7 and some songs most people won’t dance to but will love to hear they 6. The magic foumula for rocking dance floor is:

song 1: 10,9
song 2: 10,9
song 3: 8,7
song 4: 10,9

Rinse and repeat for how ever long your set is.

The first thing the tracklist is wrong.

The first transition the volume was a tad loud (2:54).

The 2nd transition was a bit abrupt. Maybe I’m wrong but it sounds like you turned down the bass to in order mix in the song (????). That’s an edm technique that isn’t used in Hip Hop. It rarely sounds good. I’m not fan of using edm techniques for mixing Hip hop since for over 30 years people mixed Hip Hop without using these techniques you should be able to do so as well.

The 3rd transition (9:08) was off, too loud and the beats weren’t totally matched.
The 4th transition I don’t what to say about that.
The 5th transition was a tad abrupt as well.
The 6th transition was a tad abrupt again.
The 7th transition was abrupt again.

For me a good mix consists of good track selection and solid mixing techniques. Trackwise your mix is an 5 since most of the tracks are mediocre with the exception of the DITC Track. Mixing wise I have to say it needs work. I didn’t listen any of your other mixes so I can’t say were your mixing level is actual at but this mix isn’t very good.
