In my opinion for practicing you`ll definitly need a dj-splitter-cable. Pre-listing is very important to match your tracks (even if your practicing) and a splitter cable isen`t that expensive.
When you get on a higher level you could buy an external soundcard for improving sound quality and reducing latencys. But to geet started you`ll just need software-hercules-dj splitter cable. Thats the greatest hing about DDJing… you could get started on a very cheap level…

I mean that the s4 was used from DJ`s in clubs with a very good feedback. The VCI is brand new out on the market and has no reputations… except my one…

Yeah you`re right with bringing new ideas. I`ve also searched a bit… There are ways to make my windows pc a mc one. But I won`t set up my whole system new just to make the VCI work. I was very nervous, when I was ordering it. All reviews were positive and the VCI was hyped as the new controllerism allaroundsolution, and so on. So know after spending the whole weekend to fix this driver issue with no results I´m very disapointed. I´ve paid 800 bugs to have a working controller out-of-the-box. And now this driver problem… the loose power supply… This gear can´t be used on live gigs, thats horrible. Even if they solve the driver issue there`s also the power supply… This isen´t a working gear and its not worth the half of what it costs… Sorry I know this is hard, but its really true. 800€ for a controller which isen´t working on windows systems the next two month… and which isen´t working at all if you see this loose power supply. If you are on stage and this thing turn off right in your set…. your really f***** up.

Yeah.. could be the Vestax is built of solid metal and the buttons are very professionell. But like I´ve sad the S4 is a well known gear with a lot of support and club-expirience. The VCI really has some hard teething troubles, if you know what I mean.
I`m about to send my VCI back and getting a S4 or a DDJ-T1 instead or maybe a cheaper controller, I don`t know. But when I bought the VCI controller I mentioned I bought a controller for controllerism with works with low latencys and high compatibility and which is totally mappable. But there are some really big issues with that one (some LED`S aren´t mappable, the power supply plug is piece of crap and switches the VCI on and off all the time and last but not least the driver issues, which making this gear unuseable for windows user). So the S4 is a very well known pro-controller with all good reputaions. In case of VCI-400 vs. S4… You definitly should choose the S4.

I think the S4 will definitly last your conditions and serve you great the next 3 years. The VCI feels very good, very solid… and when you use a diffrent soundcard (not the internal) with windows, it works great all around. But you have to do a little mapping to make it more comfortable and the buttons aren´t taged. In my opinion regular DJ´s should choose the S4 because its ready out-of-the-box and a very well known and well mapped piece of gear. The VCI isen´t that ready for the market at the moment. If you wan´t to buy one, then wait up to february next year. The electricity plug is very loose, so it switches on and off while using… so definitly no gear for live-gigs. There is also a big windows-driver-issue, which causes latencys up to 80ms (useless for DJ`s and controllerists).

So… Now I´ve got a feedback from vestax. They are about to make a driver update in the next two weeks. Within this driver update is NO peformance-improvement, it just sets the priority for the CPU. This also can be done manually and has no big effect on the latency. I could reduce mine to around 40ms. This is almost unplayable for a controllerist that uses cuepoints and effects.
This driver problems won´t be solved in the next two or three months… Its in the hand of the Vestax guys. I´m a little bit angry about the fact that they are selling this gear without a usefull windows compatibility.

The VCI-400 has very big problems on windows system. I got one and I´m a windows user. This problems won´t be solved in the next two up to three months. You also should be into mapping for the VCI. It comes with a Traktor mapping, but that one isen´t that strong.
The S4 should be the right one to get started out of the box… the VCI-400 is really something for Controllerists and Mac-User…

I started with the hercules mp3 e2 myself. Its exactly the right gear to check out controllerism. I`ve just bought a VCI-400 but know I´ll go back to my hercules, but thats another topic.
It has no built in soundcard but, you´re right, that won`t be necessary. But for DJing you should buy a DJ crosscabel (or whatever them called in english). Our both friend Phil has made a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL_kNCnWLxc&feature=plcp&context=C2d970UDOEgsToPDskL9XV7vjRzsrbjfiqXDyA9E) about it. With this cable you should be able to use headphones.

I´ve installed the whole VCI-400 on another system, without letting windows install drivers from windows update and without a connection to the internet, because I thought its a driver issue. When you look into the traktor preferences there is the VCI audio device called “VCI-400 (ASIO)”, so definitly no Win-driver. But when I look into the hardware-manager from windows, the only audio card is the “USB Multi-Interface Driver” with a driver from microsoft (the driver-details sat so).

But even in this case, on a whole new system (windows 7 64bit, Intel Core i3-330M CPU, 4GB DDR3 Ram), I´ve even 42,6ms of latency. I tested this with playing deck a and cuejuggling on deck b at the same time.
