If you do think you have a truly brilliant idea, I understand how you might want recognition. Why not just share the idea in public so we all know you came up with it, and if NI decides to pick it up they’ll do the hard work and write the code.

Don’t think of it as giving it away, think of it as having NI write the code for you and turn your idea into something tangible that you and everyone else can actually use, and NI gets a better product. Everybody wins.

I was in the same boat (trying to make a decision on the Twitch vs S2). I bought Twitch and here’s my first impression.

Background: I play most for fun, nothing serious. I play deep house primarly, some tech house and downtempo as well. I don’t have much need for scratching, beat slicing, etc. Cueing, easy tempo-matching, filters and gating are more important to me.

I bought the Twitch mainly to try out Serato Itch. I do much prefer Itch to Traktor. I love the stacked waveforms and elastic beatgrid. It make mixing and looping a lot more foolproof.

Now onto the Twitch. I have to say the touchstrip is not great for cueing at all. With a touchstrip, you have to swipe repeatedly to get to where you want. Worse yet, Novation made the touchstrip very modal (it has about 5-6 modes of operation), if you’re in the wrong mode you could brake the record.

On the plus side, the hardware beatgrid control is stellar. i can fix beatgrid on a new track after it’s loaded very quickly as long as it’s BPM is steady (e.g. not a vinyl rip). Instead I waste a lot of time cueing back and forth using mouse + touchstrip while I’m beatgriding that would have been a lot faster with a jog wheel.

I don’t find much use for the beat-slicing since I play mostly deep house, but the autoloop and looproll can be fun with filters for house music.

So basically, I bought the Twitch mainly for Serato Itch because it’s the only Itch controller around $400, and gave up the jog wheel for 8 pads that I really don’t need. It’s a pretty big trade-off, so I must say if you’re not likely to use the pads or slicing, stick with a jog wheel controller.

Since you already said you’re using Traktor and happy with it, and don’t need sampling, I think the S2 is better for you. You can also add an F1 later if you need sample pads.

Getting an S2, because of the crazy deal on it lately (either this site, or djtechtools has them for about $400 with a bunch of perks). But, I feel than what they cut from the S4 for the S2 is what I wanted; the sampling, filters, and overall interface. Is it just simply redundant to go to another two deck controller at this point?

How about getting the S2 for now until you get comfortable with it, then get the new Kontrol F1 for sample/loops later?

IIRC, in Phil’s S2 review on Youtube he also says the gain knobs on the S2 can be doubled as the filter knobs with the shift key. Or maybe you can consider throwing in a cheap knob controller (NanoKontrol or Nocturn) for filters and other things.

Obviously S4 has it all in one box so you should definitely go for it if it fits your needs. But it is almost 2x the price of an S2. There are also a number of other cheaper 4-deck controllers that came out @ NAMM 2012 too (Numark 4trak, Hercule 4set, Reloop Terminal Mix 4, to name a few).

My DJ software is Serato Itch, and this is why:

I’m hobbyist and only dust off my DJ controller now and then. I have a Numark Total Control with Traktor for some time and decided to upgrade. Bought the Novation Twitch last week in order to try out Itch. I really like:

    • The stacked waveforms (especially the stacked tempo/beat displays)
    • Elastic beatgrid (which make looping more foolproof)
    • Being able to adjust the beatgrid on-the-fly with Twitch
    • Good iTunes integration

    What I wish Itch had:

    • some level of customization
• the control on the Twitch can be a little too modal and clunky, it’ll be nice to be able to customize it
    • it’ll be nice if I can get an Itch controller with jog wheel and customize it to perform the same beatgrid controls like Twitch
    • I’d like to use my Launchpad and iPad as secondary controllers

Better effects

    • i play deep house mostly so i’d love to have more filter and gating options
