ParticipantWildbeats,
First and foremost congrats.
Reggae has so many flavours, and so many people want to listen to ragga/dancehall but still call it Reggae.Reggae is very chilled out and has a very low BPM. Dancehall on the other hand is more mordern and danceable.
For reggae, Bob Marley will be your man
For Dancehall, you tube Sean Paul, Beanie Man, Vybz Kartel ( a new kid on the block), Shaggy, Shabba Ranks. Also, with this, you can easily flow into Soca very well.
For Soca music, it is usually timeless, in other words , the same tunes that were rocking 10 years ago will still be relevant, as Steelo said, do a search for “top Soca tunes”Apologies for not being able to help further.
Goodluck and let us know how it goes

ParticipantSteve,
The MTP is a controller that i have recommended to quite a number of people ( i believe Numark should start sending me a fee for this).
I have used the MTP in the club, i have used it at parties and i currently use it for my radio shows. It is the best in it’s class which is the entrance level of controllers. It is also not expensive. It is sturdy as well, which helps as mostly i put mine in a rocksack when going to a gig.
I have not yet outgrown of mine. Why many people do so quickly is beyond me. If i change mine, it will simple be to add more buttons for some extras. It is also a controller that you can use with VDJ, Serato or Tracktor.
Hope this will help you make up your mindgbadegesin

Logmover,
What you are looking for is the “Cue Mix in Headphones”, are you using the pro version of VDJ?
As far as i know , this function is only available in the 4 Deck Default Version 7 skin. You will find it at the top of the skin. Change the settings to say 50% and then you should her both tracksgbadegesin

eg: listen to both tracks in headphones
ps. i dont mean to sound patronising there.
Depends on what you are using.
Are you using a controller or straight from the laptop?gbadegesin
ParticipantD-Jam,
Personally, i just switch off when all the bitching and whining starts. The David Guettas’s and the rest made a name for themselves. I can’t see what’s wrong with that. Even though it’s not really a level playing field, the world is still anyones oyster.
The complaining ain’t gonna stop so i’ll just keep on doing what i do and leave the bitchers while i pass them byMay 18, 2012 at 11:31 am in reply to: What are your tricks for keeping motivated in your DJ practice sessions? #1004602gbadegesin
ParticipantI have a night i dedicate each week for practising. Everyone in my household knows this timetable.
Lately, i have started a radio show and have chosen this same slot. That way, i play n practise at the same time.
Perfect combination….April 27, 2012 at 3:31 pm in reply to: Need help with Virtual DJ, Pioneer DJM 5000, MEP 7000, Macbook Pro! #1003704gbadegesin

ParticipantZigs,
Good question
It’s funny cos i never had a mentor. I listened to other DJs, radio stations, watched DJs at clubs and parties and read alot.
I had alot of DJ friends but i never told them i was going into DJaying cos i had the feeling that they would sneer and try to protect their corner and also maybe disuade me.
I loved music already so learning the basic structure of a song wasn’t too difficult. I practised for hours , days and months, beat matching and the rest. It came as quite a revelation when people around me finally got to know that i was into Djaying. I always liked the look of dismay on their faces when they found out it was true and that i could actually mix.I tend to learn better that way. I call it ‘Observant Learning’. Nevertheless, if you can find a mentor, it’s probably a good thing as i understand most DJs learnt this way. As you say, they would also be able to show you the social side of Djaying as well as the technical stuff.
Happy learning….

ParticipantBeepo,
It seems you have figured out the answer by yourself.
Whenever i get those funny looks or comments from other DJs, i always tell them ‘Let the dance floor be the judge’gbadegesin

ParticipantDJ Manhattan,
If your question is D’jed in a club while on a trip, then no. If it is creating mixes and stuff, then yes.
When i first started , i did not know that controllers existed. As such, i just used to DJ off my laptop and i still do it when i travel. The last time being last week while on holiday.
I have created mixes in the most craziest of places. On planes while travelling, in my car in a car park, hotels, while on my lunch break. The amazing thing is that my listeners cannot decipher the difference between when i use my controller or straight from the lappy ( i can though)
Once i have my laptop with me, there ain’t no stopping the fun. All you have to do is master your mapping -
