Everyone’s elaborated very well, so I’ll keep it short. If you play underground music to a mainstream crowd, people are going to look at you like you’ve got three heads and walk right out. Mainstream is mainstream for a huge reason, it’s popular. If you choose to reject popular music (and by all means, you can- that’s your choice), then you may be disoriented when people don’t understand what it is that you’re playing.

For example, I love trance and electro. However, most of my gigs have been at lounges where people come to relax and listen to music they like while smoking/drinking/talking (read: not dance). So I when I tried to blast peak-hour progressive and no one responded, I had a very rude awakening: “Maybe this isn’t the crowd for this.” So I re-analyzed my stance as a DJ and made the choice to pander out Top 40, R&B, jazz, etc. Of course I still slip in a little of what I love in small doses, but it took some serious introspection about the direction I wanted to go before I became comfortable with what I was doing.

For you, you’re choosing to stick to your guns. So stick to them. But make sure that you’re in the right place. If you’re on a Friday night at the local college club/bar playing music that’s so far underground that the vinyl is made from the mantle of the Earth’s core, don’t be surprised if people are upset that you’re not playing Flo Rida or Avicii. (See what I did there? People confuse the two songs all the time. It’s a joke, but after a serious post.) Ba dum tssh.

[EDIT: I said I’d keep it short, but I didn’t. Woops.]

I was thinking along the same lines. I’ve done pretty much all I can to reduce the influence of software errors with updates, but I’m not sure if it’s an incompatibility issue. I’ve seen on Serato and Numark that there may be a freezing issue due to the BIOS versions of i5 CPUs and the controller’s drivers and/or the ITCH program itself. I certainly hope it’s not a hardware issue, either.

    How frustrating.

I can’t confirm if this is a thing or not. However, I can confirm that 66.6% of all DJs I personally know are filthy pirates and play their stuff live anyway.

I peruse a few SoundCloud pages. I’m not sure what genre you play, however these are some folks I follow:

    http://soundcloud.com/djkontrol (Trap music, house/hip-hop blends)
    http://soundcloud.com/jenilaspiras (Club, R&B, rap transitions and mash-ups)
http://soundcloud.com/tompottenmusic (Dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass, house)

Triarchy has several mash-up and edit packs available for download on their Facebook free for a “Like”: http://www.facebook.com/Triarchy/app_208412272531040 (Big room house and trance)

    Hope this helps.

    Hi there, Primlock.

When I first started out a few years ago, I had a similar budget. DJ Dan brought up a good point, starting on entry-level gear may be a good idea to consider especially with a limited amount of money. You want to make sure that this isn’t just a moment of passion. As a parallel, I’ve seen people get very passionate about physical fitness and their top-of-the-line elliptical and training equipment becomes just a fancy clothes-hanger after a few months.

Buying used or second-hand via Craigslist really helped me out, I was able to construct a simple PA and purchase my first few pieces of gear (Numark Mixtrack Pro and Pioneer HDJ-1000 Headphones) for under $2000 USD. Something to think about, because life happens when you least expect it. You may need some of your DJing budget to dig you out of an unfortunate event.

Your plan is good and there certainly is a lot of literature both on this website’s blog and in the forums to digest. First things first, though. As far as learning to mix: I would recommend Phil’s “How To Digital DJ Fast” course, especially the videos about beatmatching and classic mixing techniques if you plan on transitioning towards club DJing. Other great online resources are YouTube channels like Ellaskins and DJ TechTools. I’m still in the transition phase to learning about production so I can’t recommend too much about that.

Macs are great, but not vital. I use a Windows laptop and it works just fine for me.

I feel like if I were to answer without giving myself a few eons to consider everything, I’d be disappointed with what I said.

I know a lot of guys in the industry that have trouble making rent every month, get bounced from market to market at the whim of a one nazi General Manger to another but for the 60 hours a week they put into their shows they are the happiest people I know…most of the time.

My point is, don’t compare yourself to other DJ’s. Realize what you’re willing to give and what you’re not. When you make peace with that everything becomes much easier. If you’re not having or finding fun in everything you do, you’re doing it wrong.

Puts things in perspective; couldn’t ask for a more direct answer. Thanks.
