always important especially when people have to setup a serato box or bands need to borrow the pa for their sets and have to unplug cables for the amp..always bring a light.

earbuds to block out annoying dubstep or the sound of the room when djs are red lining mixers before your set.

Also extension cords (I saved a party friday night by running 90 feet around the entire dance floor when the power kept cutting out..

Duct tape and extra cables is also an other crucial thing someone already mentioned..

Usually when I have a bad blend or something goes wrong with the gear or some trixie annoys me with incessant requests…I get nervous.

Honestly i need to start doing that or at least chill on a good domestic..something to past the time before my set always helps.

It’s all about knowing your music, the crowd thats going to be at the venue and your place in the lineup. If you know those three things and you do a considerable amount of practicing beforehand nerves should fade away..your only nervous if you dont know the material like the back of your hand..

It’s like descending on a road bike down a cliff at 40+ mph your going to be nervous the first time because you’ve never gone that fast before..but after you do it your like holy balls that was awesome..

Yea..I returned the sennheisers the day after i bought them and went with the HDJs. I got them for $140 they are a bit uncomfortable (you can buy protein leather earcups for another $40) but for djing they are great because they are loud (108db) and relatively flat. good call on the hdjs

The reason why I enjoy being the first dj on the line up is because I like to build trust in the audience’s eyes so they know the night will be a banger. It’s the calm before the storm..people look at me and know ok..a real head. He’s giving you “room to breathe and socialize before the more established djs get on and burn down the building”

Getting people to “move” depends on your ability to warm up the sound system..you have to ease people into your style most of the times and in order to do that you better take note of how drunk people are and their reactions to certain songs whether that be pop, hip-hop or deep house.

Personally I like to go with classic deep house because I always get people to turn around. Its different and definitely a more experimental sound especially among young people here in Philadelphia. In my opinion, if you just display a degree of intelligence in your mixes without going to far and boring people you’ll be able to get people dancing.

Some of those best moments for me aren’t involving people are “raging” its when you get those 2 or 3 homies in the room just boppin their head while they chill with their girl. Thats the only reason why I like being a dj..its not about tricks, gear, social status or any of that..its just a matter of having those few people who know why they came out..to enjoy music.

    1) create a master folder. (ex:Fuxxwiddit.Music)

    2) In that folder take all dance tracks/dj music and run them in Mixed in Key so it changes the id3 tag with the key and bpm.

Then take the tracks that you downloaded that day and put them into a folder for that day “ex: 8.24.12” after that I take that folder and put it into a folder by month (ex: Fuxxwiddit.August.2012).

Master folder > Month of the year > Day.

Then I import them all into rekordbox.

(A friend just recently hooked me up with a free Macbook Pro so I might consider making folders in itunes but that might be a little over sensitive)

I would be leaning towards Sennheiser HD-25-II for new headphones but if you want to get a good pair of headphones go with the Sony MDR 600’s or 7506’s. They are pretty much the industry standard for any type of audio/video/tv production. The sound quality is amazing/build quality is a little cheap but for Djing they are so worth it because they are relatively cheap and sound so crisp. (one of the main differences between the two headphones is the nickel/gold plated 1/4 input. So if you want to save $60 go with the MDR 600’s which has a more rugged build quality and the nickel input)

The only reason why I am responding to this is because I have own a pair of crossfades and the drivers are already deteriorating. The bass response is great along with the hardcore build quality, I would highly recommend them for listening to music but for actual performance I would not recommend them. The sound isolation is nice but sound quality is to bass heavy leading to complications when mixing. (Gotta have those frequencies sounding crisp)

So for 60-120$ pick up a pair of sony’s. You may not be as “fly” but old heads will know that you are serious when you walk in with headphones that have been in this industry for 15+ years that still stand the test of time.

Right on brotha. We have everything worked out now. A friend is calling off the rest of his night shift, picking us up in a truck, driving 4 hours to ohio, then driving back for a 5am shift. It’s brutal.
