ParticipantLike mentioned above, youtube’s related videos are the way to go, and the “Watch Later” playlist has been the death of me :). I’ve always got around 15 or so in there waiting to be heard. Pandora helped me when I was just getting into EDM as well.

ParticipantAbsolutely. I’ve been recording all my practice sessions in the evenings then putting them to my ipod to listen to on the way to and from work the next day. I’ve realized that while you’re in the mix, you’re mindset is so much different from when you’re just listening to music. It’s eye-opening to hear what you did the night before in a completely different environment. What you thought was the most innovative mix comes across as awkward and stilted, and that time you screwed up all the EQs is barely noticeable.
Recording everything also puts some pressure on you like in a performance situation. If you mess something up, you can’t just scratch it all back and try again, you have to scramble your way out of it and move on.
You can’t get growth without reflection.

ParticipantI was in a similar situation last week in that I was wondering whether I should just get out and start asking for gigs with no experience (and get my foot in the door as soon as possible) or keep working, honing my skills and be really good before going out and marketing myself. I decided that the most important thing was to get my name out so I just showed up cold to ask four places in the span of a week if I could dj for them. One said no and one never gave me an answer, but two said yes!
I recommend getting out there as soon as you can because you never know the circumstances that the venue/owner is going through. The two places that said yes, a bar and an art gallery, both wanted me to play because they had openings/cancellations coming up. The bar wanted me there a mere two days after I asked because that’s when the owner had the availability. If I had used those two days to practice and build a bigger fanbase, sure I would probably have had a better set-list and marketing pitch, but I also wouldn’t have gotten my first gig (which turned into a second because the owner even asked me back for this coming week). The art gallery had their usual music group cancel and who knows how much longer until they would have filled the slot with someone else had I not wandered in that afternoon.
I felt as unconfident as anyone could be when I was going in and asking these places for a chance but, experience or not, I know I’m talented, and I’m sure it’s the same with you. Just be professional about it and keep asking and getting your name out until it happens.

ParticipantThanks so much for all the input everyone! The night went off spectacularly and the owner asked me back next week! He’ll get in touch with me Monday or Tuesday to talk details and now I’ve got an idea of what to aim for. Thanks again!

ParticipantI’ve got my first official gig tonight so I’m finally taking the plunge into a facebook page as well! There’s nothing on it at the moment as I’ve got to get things together for my set tonight but I’ll put everything up here in the next few days.

ParticipantThanks so much for the input. I’m in Waco, TX. Really all that’s in this town is Baylor (National champs if you didn’t hear by the way :)) so there’s a decent bar scene but there’s nothing so far as a night/dance club goes so it’s a bit unusual to see a live dj. I’m hoping that works in my favor!
And 2Shae, all I need to bring is my controller because the venue has provided everything else. As I imagine everyone is, I’m all for guaranteed pay so I’ll definitely push for that if all goes well tonight.

ParticipantThey are waiting on FCC clearing so they’re not released yet (so obviously I can’t give you a personal review) but I’ll most likely be getting the Behringer HPX6000s whenever they come out.
Here’s the DDT review http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/03/review-behringer-hpx6000-dj-headphones/

ParticipantI can’t speak to the 4Trak, but I’ve had the N4 for a good while now and I’ve loved every second of it. I needed 4 deck control as well and the N4 came out just as I was looking for a new controller. The Numark website has a mapping for Traktor Pro 2 so after loading that I haven’t had any problems with Traktor.
If you haven’t seen it yet, this is just about spot on with my experience with the N4 http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/01/review-video-numark-n4-dj-controller-mixer/
My only issues (and they’re not even as bad as you’d think) with it has been the pitch faders like the DDT review mentions, and the EQ kills. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to hit the Pitch Range button which gets rid of the pitch fader problem for all effective purposes so that solves that but when I’m using Traktor, the EQs don’t seem to kill 100% no matter what EQ settings I use in the preferences menu. I imagine it is just a mapping problem however, as the EQs do kill 100% when using either Virtual DJ or Serato DJ Intro.
Ultimately, from what I’ve read of it, I would prefer the 4Trak but that’s because I’m greedy (who wouldn’t prefer a $1000 controller over a $500?). The N4 was a great purchase and I’d recommend it to anyone needing decently priced 4 deck control.

ParticipantI had never heard of it, what was it? All the website says is that it’s now closed.

ParticipantI’m in the same boat and have been having trouble with it as well. I’m learning that, for the most part, you need to abandon the long (meaning longer than probably two bars) mixes that come so naturally with EDM. Hard cuts (with some added effects for style points) are the way to go, otherwise things quickly fall apart as I imagine you’ve discovered. That djtechtools link has some good info as well. I’m interested to hear any other tips.

ParticipantNo idea. I just did a search myself and came up empty-handed.

ParticipantI imagine everyone has a little different interpretation about bootlegs and edits and they probably depend on where you’re from. Here’s how I know them though:
A bootleg is a remix that was made by using only the original track in its entirety. The remixer did not have access to the original track’s stems (melody, vocals, bassline, etc.). When a remix is released officially, it is almost never a bootleg because the original artist gives the stems to the remixer to work with. I know many people refer to any unofficial remix as a bootleg as well though, which I can understand because it most likely is.
An edit is not really a remix in that it is merely altered for time or content. For example, in Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance albums, many of the tracks used are named “Track Name (Original Mix Edit).” This means that although the original track was used, it was altered (I imagine most likely a break or something similar was cut out for time’s sake) in order for it to better fit in the mix. It’s the same thing when you hear “Radio Edit” or “Vocal Edit.” It is the same original track, just edited for time/content so it can play on the radio, or with vocals added, respectively.
A VIP track stands for Variation In Production and is a remix done by the same artist who made the original (hence the variation in its production).
I’m still not too sure about “Dub” though. I’ve heard so many definitions of it I’m not sure if anyone knows what it means anymore.

ParticipantI don’t have personal experience with any of the controllers you’ve listed, although I know the S2 does not have 4 deck control, as that seems what you’re looking for. But no radio station is going to have a requirement for a “top notch” controller. As long as you’re making good music and you can hook up properly to their system, anyone who knows what they’re doing won’t care about what you’re using to dj.
In any case, I’ve been using the Numark N4 for awhile now and it’s been great for me. It’s got 4 deck control and is TP2 compatible.

ParticipantIndirectly related to your question, but something that confused me as well was the difference between a remix and a mash-up. A remix is a version of an original track to which the remixer has added his/her own production (synths, melodies, breakdowns, etc.) whereas a mash-up is two (or more) tracks “mashed” together, meaning the tracks are more or less played on top of each other, creating what sounds like a new track in itself. So basically, if original material is added to the track, it’s a remix. If one original track is combined with another original track, it’s a mash-up.
I know this isn’t what you were asking, but it’s something that gave me trouble.
DJ
ParticipantThe only time I would play the remix is right after the original as long as you didn’t play the entire original out. I’d say half and half is good, meaning the first half of the original and the second half of the remix. Don’t repeat the same parts (intro, verse, bridge, etc.) of the original with the remix or it will just sound choppy and probably confuse people.
