Bummer, this is a great idea and I even live in the Springs, but I’m in Texas now for school. How’s the edm scene up there? I was 100% into metal before I left so I know that that’s doing well (like the Black Sheep, etc.) but is there any decent electronic (assuming you’re an edm dj) and are you playing anywhere?

Go into the config menu and change the sound configuration to “Headphones” (I haven’t used VDJ in a while so that may not be the exact name, but it’s whatever setting has “headphones” in the title). You’ve most likely got it set to “Single Out.”

Yeah I imagine life’s been miserable after moving out of that scene. I definitely will and please do the same! And once you get tickets to one event you get placed on all the mailing lists so you’ll find out about any cool stuff going on.

I just did a full uninstall-reinstall of Traktor and nothing’s changed. Still no hp cueing. Any thoughts? I’ve got a gig next Saturday and I need this to be working. I guess I could still do it with VDJ or Serato if this isn’t figured out by then but they’re both the light versions that came with the N4 so I can’t do any mapping.

Yeah, Austin or Dallas are the closest places with anything decent. Are you going to Nocturnal? The lineup is nothing like it was the last two years but it should still be a good time.

No way, all right! Well when we both get ultra-famous we can co-headline the Middle of Nowhere, Texas Festival!

Hey Xhris! Glad to see a fellow Texas resident! What part of Texas? I’m in Waco.

Also the lack of the typical “intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus” structure. It’s still there in some metal and edm songs, but most of the metal and edm I listen to and love tends to depart from that structure. That blog looks great, I’ll give it a listen when I’m off work. I can’t remember the name of the channel, but there’s a guy on youtube that posts trance remixes of metal songs as well.

I’m at work at the moment (I don’t know why they haven’t blocked this site by now, with all time I spend on it) so I can’t get to your mixes for a few more hours but here’s my latest 30 minute mix that I’m quite proud of. I’ll listen to both of yours when I’m home.

Make sure the two tracks are phase matched (not necessarily beatmatched, but that could also help, depending on the genres you’re mixing) and at the same volume, then slide the cross-fader over to the new track in one beat. It’s the “hard cut,” the quickest mix out there.

I started messing around with Mulholland Dr. (for no other reason than I’m a huge David Lynch fan) and can’t figure out what it does. Sometimes it’s a hiss/buzz and sometimes it’s nothing (maybe that’s why it’s named what it is :)). I’ve also no idea what the “pulse” variation is, but Shishdisma is right, all the more obscure effects are much more suited for breaks and light melodies than choruses and drops. I have a feeling Traktor included all those fringe effects more for the sake of “look how many effects I have” than for actual mixing use.

Speaking of, what do you do to use Bouncer effectively?

That’s funny you mention that because I also was 100% into metal before EDM. I’ve met a lot of people like that actually, and you’ll always see t-shirts of metal bands at raves and festivals. It’s funny that that happens because you wouldn’t think the genres are similar. I guess it’s something subliminal :).

I just walked straight into whatever venue it was and asked for whoever’s in charge of bookings. Emails are too easy for them to ignore (my one “no answer” was an email). Make sure you’re prepared before you go in, but I don’t think you need the preparation that you’re talking about. It doesn’t matter which places have parties and when. If you show up asking to play for them, especially if you do it consistently, you’ll eventually end up on their “go-to list” regardless of whether they have parties or not. If they know they’ve got a dj (you) that’s willing to play for a night, bring people in, and make them money, they’ll host any kind of party they can.

My next gig is at a monthly exhibit at an art gallery. I’ve been to this gallery’s exhibits a few times and they have the same acoustic/folk duet perform each month (for three years running, allegedly). I just went in one afternoon and told them I thought it would be a nice modern twist if I could dj during the exhibit and they loved the idea. If you worry about the venue normally having djs or parties, you could be missing out on great opportunities like this. Mind you, this isn’t going to be the underground rave club that every dj fantasizes about, but it’s a fantastic opportunity to play in public and play only the tracks that I want (meaning there’s no requirement to work in the Top 40 nonsense like there is at most bars/clubs).

@Terry_42 I prefer mixes to compilations. You’re right about the 50 track compilations that contain only two decent tracks. I’ve found it’s much easier and time-efficient to just put on a youtube or mixcloud mix in the background while you’re doing something. When you’re not really paying attention to it, you’ll be able to catch only the tracks that truly stand out to you. When one does, it’s usually easy enough to find the track name either by the mixcloud tracklisting or the youtube comments. You can then go get that one song rather than a whole compilation that you’ll never use.
