In iTunes under the “Rating” category you can rate songs from 1 to 5 stars

ParticipantYou mean you don’t want your set to be played? Well it is going to be played if you’re sending it to a promoter, that’s his job! The only thing you can do is add a name drop in on top of the music as a watermark to identify the set as yours.

I’ve never thought about tagging like that but I guess it’s worth a shot. I do tag using the iTunes star system though, with 1 star being a little to no energy track and 5 stars being a peak-time banger.

ParticipantIn my opinion, absolutely not. I don’t consider it stealing any more than copying someone else’s athletic technique is stealing. Sure, some people may frown upon it and say “Oh, he’s just trying to look like (insert athlete),” but if it means that you’re the one scoring the points, power to you.
Of course, like you mentioned, that’s got its limits. Don’t go copying an entire set, but there’s nothing wrong with imitating someone else’s transition/programming when it fits into the set and your personal style.

ParticipantThis principle is better stated in another thread around here somewhere but, paraphrased: Think of your entire mix as a story with an introduction, conflict, resolution, and ending. Different tracks give different vibes and create different atmospheres and you can use that to your advantage to mold the storyline to your liking. So instead of thinking “now I want a tech-house tune, now I want something more minimal, now a tempo change, etc.” think more along the lines of “this is the part where boy-meets-girl, this is the part where girl-meets-other-boy, this is the part where other-boy turns out to be not-a-boy, etc.”
At least it works for me to keep things flowing.

ParticipantThis actually happened in my last gig. I bumped the end of the extension cord that I had the master speakers and my Numark N4 plugged into and everything shut off for a fraction of a second and turned back on. I’m not sure if it was a Traktor issue or a controller issue but my N4 wouldn’t control anything in Traktor anymore. I just had to let the current song play out and restart Traktor in order to get everything working again.

ParticipantHarmonic mixing is probably the best solution to ensure frequencies don’t clash but a bit of EQing wouldn’t hurt either. Vocals lie primarily in the mids, so taking away some of the highs and lows of song A will most likely help.
DJ
ParticipantTry putting the speakers in the master output, and make sure “Headphones” is selected in VDJ’s sound configuration menu instead of “Single Out” (I haven’t used VDJ in awhile so those may not be how the names are exactly in the config. menu but they are something close to those)

ParticipantI use the microphone recorder on my cell phone when I’m out of the house and get a melody, rhythm, etc. in my head. Then you’ve got it down so you can listen to it later when you’re in front of the computer. FL is very versatile and you don’t even need samples to make decent music. It’s got enough VSTs already included that you should be able to get a sound that’s at least very close to what you’re looking for.
DJ
ParticipantHa, yeah that quickstart guide is as close to worthless as you can get! What software are you using? It sounds like you’ve got what should be the monitor output routed to the master output
DJ
ParticipantYeah I don’t know why it wouldn’t. Very basic but just in case, have you got “External Sound” selected in the sound configuration menu? And did you install the software before connecting the controller?

ParticipantI was debating between the two as well and I chose the N4 because of the four deck capability and that it looks more professional to me than the Mixtrack Pro. I also figured I would outgrow the Mixtrack too quickly so I wanted to invest in a more professional controller. Functionally though I imagine they’re just about equal apart from the N4 handling four decks and the Mixtrack just two. I find the N4’s unmapped button configuration to be more geared towards effects whereas the Mixtrack is more towards hot cues. Also of note, unless you’ve found a special deal somewhere, the N4 is $250 more than the Mixtrack Pro. All things considered though, I am 100% positive that I made the right decision with the N4.

ParticipantI don’t know about the Mixdeck, but I’ve got the N4 and it’s been great. I prefer Traktor as well and although the N4 is designed for VDJ and Serato, the Numark website has got a Traktor Pro 2 mapping for it and ever since I downloaded that I haven’t had any problems. Also, isn’t the Mixdeck only a 2 deck controller?

ParticipantThat’s awesome man, best of luck to you. Yeah unfortunately I left the Springs before I was 21 so I can’t give you any insider tips on the club scene either. I started in December as well and have just been asking all over town until I find a place. I had my first gig at a bar last week and I’m dj-ing an art gallery this weekend. Just ask all over, club or not, and get your name out. Let me know where you end up!

ParticipantFinally after ~12 total hours (literally) of blood, sweat, tears, and everything short of an entire OS reformat, I found the problem. The N4 became known to my laptop as “N4 (Speakers)” (and was listed as such in the Windows sound device manager).
I still don’t know how it happened but in the configuration menu for the “N4 (Speakers)” device the balance (whether sound is going to left or right speaker) was set to 0% left and 0% right (I don’t know who thought it was a good idea to set up the balance up like that anyway, with one slider for percent left and one for percent right instead of a single slider that slides from left to right so you at least get some sound somewhere). In any case, I set them both to 100% and it’s back to working just like normal. It wasn’t a Traktor issue at all.
Hopefully there’s some decent troubleshooting tips in there for anybody having any similar problems.
