I’m not familiar with pioneer, but are you trying to make Traktor’s dual low/high cut filter into a high pass? I’m assuming by pioneer’s neutral position being fully left that it’s only a high pass filter and not a dual like Traktor’s.

I get what you’re saying but it is EDM. Whereas techno as in “OMG I lovez techno” is an American misnomer, EDM is the overarching, catch-all term for music made with a computer rather than an instrument and that is produced with the purpose of playing out to a dance crowd. “Techno,” at least in America, is the term used by people who don’t know the music, not EDM.

Check art galleries as well. The best gig I’ve had was at a little art gallery exhibit. It’s the perfect dj gig in my opinion. You play exactly what you want to play, pre-programmed or not (as long as it’s something appropriate for a gallery exhibit, of course), and don’t have to deal with requests and the other headaches you get when you’re playing in a club. My set was four solid hours of nothing but deep and tech house and I loved every second of it. You don’t have hundreds of fans going mental and chanting your name and Jesus poses are typically kept to a minimum but, to me, the benefits completely outweighed the costs.

I think you’re talking about what happens when you switch tracks. Say you have deck A playing so you cue and beatmatch deck B using the pitch fader to match deck A. B’s pitch fader is now non-zero. You’ll then cue the new deck A track and play that one, followed by loading a new track to deck B. Deck B’s pitch fader is already out of place since you cued it up last time. It’s in this instance that you now have to bring B’s pitch fader back to zero before you can adjust the track’s tempo (This is at least what happens with my current Traktor Pro 2 settings–you have to bring the controller value to match the software value before anything happens. The new track loads in the software with the software’s pitch fader at zero regardless of where the controller’s is, so you have to bring the controller’s fader up/down to match the software’s before any tempo changes are made).

I’m definitely not hating, because I’ve seen him twice and it’s always fantastic but I think Steve Aoki is a great example of a dj who doesn’t mix. Both times I’ve seen him he isn’t even behind the decks half the time. He presses play on track A, gets out of the booth, jumps around, spits champagne, throws cake, crowd surfs, and lights things on fire before climbing back in the booth, pressing play on track B when there’s 32 beats left in track A, getting back out of the booth, and continuing to do whatever so inspires him. The great thing is you never even realize it because you’re having such a blast the whole set.

I guess the measure of a great set for me (or maybe for anyone) is a continuum based on track selection, mixing, and performance/charisma. If you’re lacking in one area you can use the others to make up for it.

To my knowledge, the Built-In Soundcard is just the backup soundcard in case the the audio device fails.

N4’s been great for me. It took a little mapping work to get everything in Traktor how I like it but I’ve been loving life with it since.

I was thinking the same thing, Steelo. I’d seen everyone walking around campus with those red wires hanging out so I tried them on in a Best Buy and wasn’t impressed. Their build quality was out of this world, definitely one of the best I’ve ever experienced (although my list is rather short), but nothing about the sound quality wowed me.

I imagine that it’s not ideal to mix brands but as long as there isn’t a big power/eq difference between them I don’t know why it would be a problem. Cords are usually either RCAs or XLRs depending on what inputs/outputs the system and your controller/mixer has or what your preferences are regarding balanced/unbalanced connections.

I can’t offer any help unfortunately but I’m getting to be in the same boat. I feel like something that’s holding me back is not having my own system so I can play anywhere, anytime, so I’m interested to hear any input as well.
I’ve looked into it a bit and I hear that for the most part Mackie’s are a good low cost, high quality pick.

For me it depends on whether I’m getting the music to listen to or to dj with. If it’s an artist that I’ve always enjoyed and that I’ll want to listen to, I’ll pick up the CD, both in order to have the full album as well as to have a physical copy (I’ve always preferred to have something tangible). CDs always pay off for me when they’re of artists I really admire, especially because they’re the artists that have made their albums to be listened to in their entirety–placing the tracks in the correct order (or mixing them all together) so that it really takes you on a journey.
Otherwise, if I’m looking for or really like just a few tracks that happen to be on the same album, I won’t usually spring for the CD, I’ll just go pick up the individual mp3s.

As long as your controller has a Cue/Mix knob you’ll be fine. Turn it to ~10 o’clock so that you can hear both the master through your headphone as well as the one that you’re cueing

Dance! And always look like you’re enjoying yourself (even if you’re shaking the entire time)

I’ve never used the Mixtrack specifically but the principle should be the same. You should have the sound card and Mixtrack connected to the laptop, the external speakers connected to the speaker output of the sound card, and the headphones connected to the headphone output of the soundcard. Then you’ll have to go into Traktor’s audio configuration menu to make sure the settings are set to your sound card and that it’s tracking the appropriate master (external speakers) and monitor (headphones) channels. This is where you may have to mess around a bit until you find the correct settings for your sound card and computer audio settings.

I just went through and liked everyone with my dj page (Delta-Notch) as well as my personal. Like Oddity said on the last page, double publicity!
